Saffron Walden

Hello, my name is Andy Basham and I first got interested in coppice crafts and woodmanship through conservation work, mainly coppicing ancient woodlands. I was running a cane furniture workshop and material supply business at the time. Soon I realised I wanted to 'convert' to using local materials and traditional tools / practices. English woodland, particularly the uses for the underwood or coppice, became my passion. After selling my cane furniture business in London and moving to Norfolk, I took up hurdle making in willow osier, also rustic furniture, even making plantable live willow chairs and benches. I displayed and demonstrated my wares at craft fairs and built up a whole range of items to sell, including rakes, besoms and walking sticks. Seems to me very right that the best quality, or perhaps the most individual or unusual sticks occurring in nature, should be ear marked for walking sticks, after all they will be always close to hand even if not used every day. Its a strong link twixt ourselves and mother nature. What Andrew offers a range of greenwood products & services from the hazel woodland he helps manage. Utilising coppice wood and his palette of traditional skills he can weave a bespoke in-situ hazel hurdle; runs hazel chair making courses; and has a vast array of handmade hazel products - from pea sticks to faggots, from thatching spars to rake tines. See greenwood products from Coppice Designs for full list of creations >> Ethics I don't travel far for my raw materials, most is only a short bike ride away. This cuts down on 'wood miles' reducing our carbon footprint and supports the local economy. For these reasons I don't encourage people to travel long distances for my products or material. Carriage can be arranged for finished products and raw materials. Be warned this can be expensive as most of what I deal in is bulky and/or heavy. Where An old hand at woodland management Andrew is now based near Saffron Walden, North Essex. He demonstrates and displays his craft at country fairs mainly in East Anglia. See our events programme. You are welcome to view his products, contained in his 'show shed', next to his workshop at the new courses venue, Bridge Meadows, Springhill, Widdington, CB11 3SU, strictly by appointment. >>Jacob Lambert < Jacob Lambert models a "living willow chair". Want to make your own chair? See our courses page. Work Experience and Apprentceships Jacob Lambert (pictured left) got in touch and after a period of work experience became a successful apprentice. Get in touch with Andy to discuss the possibilities. Hales Wood, NNR/SSI I lead volunteer work parties at the reserve. We warmly welcome new volunteers. Coppicing is probably the best example of permaculture beneficial to man and beast (and plants!). The intricacies and diversity is mind blowing, please get involved if its not too far to come. Bring all your mates - in one car to make the journey count! Email me directly to be put on our specific Hales wood vols newsletter/mailing list for dates and other news. Become a part of the solution to climate change, instantly improve your carbon footprint, learn how, come along. While you need to be reasonably able/fit, no experience is necessary.

Lincoln

The idea of Prikli Pear was launched in 2020 during the lockdown by Creative Director and Founder, Jessica Purdie. This is when the social media and web domains were secured and the idea began taking shape. Jess worked full-time in the London PR industry whilst side-hustling on her brand idea. It wasn’t until September 2021 that Jess decided to move away from London and go full-time with her brand. This was a huge plunge into the unknown but Jess was sure that it was going to work out. Jess started with one-off knitwear pieces and accessories, gradually building products to see what worked and what didn’t. It was the only way to start without investment backing. During the winter months of 2021, Jess has received a few alteration requests from locals in the surrounding area of Lincoln and began to take on more and more. It got to the point where this overtook the clothing designs and this is where Prikli Pear’s Alterations service was born. Now a very popular service in the Lincolnshire community where individuals (men, women and children) can get their clothing repaired or altered, including occasional wear such as wedding dresses and suits! Due to popular demand, Jess began to host workshops around Lincolnshire, educating people how to fix their own clothing and create their own knitwear and crochet pieces. All workshops can be found on our events page. The name ‘Prikli Pear’ came from a nickname given to Jess during her early education… A ‘Prikli Pear’ is someone who may come across being a little unaffectionate as Jess is very sensitive to people’s vibes that they give off. No one wants to hug a negative nancey and especially Jess who keeps her aura in positive form. Whether you are affectionate or not, Prikli Pear pride itself on creating handmade clothing that tells a story and holds the personality behind the manufacturing. We aim to tell the back story of the creators by displaying WHO made the clothes and how long it took to make them. We shy away from the world of fakery and ensure we manifest true communications for our customers and our team. Prikli Pear’s style holds ‘tongue n’ cheek’ bold, graphic and colourful statement prints, knits & embroidered pieces, classic to the style of Jessica Purdie’s art! Commissions are available, visit our ‘contact’ page to find out more.

About After studying illustration, Stacey Chapman worked as a designer of interiors for events and corporate launches. She began Freehand Machine Embroidery after viewing the process on Kirstie Allsopp’s Channel 4 show. In November 2013 she founded her business, Art Sea Craft Sea, creating pet portraits in thread, to commission. Her unique application of the freehand machine embroidery process and background as an illustrator, enables her to create strikingly life like thread paintings. Since then she has exhibited around the UK at events ranging from Crufts to Countryfile Live and Kirstie Allsopp's Handmade Fair. Stacey was proud to be taken under the wing of Janome in 2016 and has taught workshops at their custom built sewing school at their HQ in Stockport. Chapman has gone on to teach creative sewing workshops around the country from regular sessions at John Lewis in Oxford Street to her hometown of Margate, Kent. For these sessions at the luxe Sands Hotel, Stacey was nominated for a Tourism and Hospitality Award in 2019 as well as being shortlisted for the National Needlecraft Awards in the same year. In 2020 started teaching online for the prestigious teaching college for the W.I., Denman at Home. Founded by Enterprise Causeway in 2015, its core purpose is to grow the creative industry and promote creativity within the community, using it to build relationships and connect people.   The idea for The Designerie was born during Christmas 2014, when Enterprise Causeway teamed up with local artists and crafters to make Christmas Trees out of recycled pallets at our industrial estate. We set up a workshop in one of our units at Enterprise Causeway and opened a pop up shop in The Diamond Centre in Coleraine. Now a gorgeous destination in Bushmills - we supports over 80 creatives on the beautiful North Coast. The heart of The Designerie has always been to create a space where people from various social and cultural backgrounds, with different interests, and of all ages can come together to be creative, make new connections and feel inspired. We have delivered this under our support for business and support for community. We want everyone who visits to feel part of the experience, so you can always expect just that when you call in to see us. Whether it’s the feeling you get when you purchase with purpose and support local, or the creative atmosphere you walk into or the various workshops available. You never know, you may even get the chance to try making something yourself.

Rachel Hearne Jewellery

Lancaster

I am a goldsmith, an artist, a craftsperson, a dreamer and a maker. I take great pride in being part of a long chain of makers who have carried on the tradition of handmade jewellery. The permanence, longevity and portability of jewellery provides a rich history in the story of being human. I am proud that my work is part of so many stories of love, celebration and joy. My work is influenced by the play of line and form found in nature and architecture. I enjoy exploring the drama of mixed materials, textures, and surface treatments in my work. I use these influences to create pieces that are contemporary and will stand the test of time. All of my designs are made in my studio in the UK. I specialise in small batch production runs meaning that my work is never mass-produced and is crafted with my own hands. I also offer bespoke commission pieces for those in search of unique and personal items to commemorate special occasions and life events. See my blog page for more details of bespoke work. ETHICS As a human, a mother and a maker I endeavour to be as environmentally responsible as I can in all my practices. This means using recycled precious metal in all my designs, sourcing precious gems through ethical suppliers and using packaging made of FSC Eco materials. I aim to keep business and workshop waste at an absolute minimum, I recycle everything I can and I use no harsh chemicals in my processes. All that said I am not perfect but I do my very best to be responsible. I keep myself educated and informed about what best options are available to me as a maker and promote those ideas and ethics onto my customers and students.
