WHO WE ARE British Home Tutors (BHT) is a collegiate group of around 60 school teachers who work or have worked at independent schools in the London area such as Westminster, St Paul’s, Latymer, Eton, Harrow, UCS, Highgate, Bute House and other top performing English private schools. We are a small organisation who have been operating in central London for almost 20 years. Our intention is to remain small so that we can retain strong quality control over what we provide. This means that at certain times of the academic year, demand exceeds supply for our services. Our unique selling point is the fact that we are classroom teachers who provide home tuition in our spare time e.g. evenings after school, at weekends and during the holidays. BHT is the only tutor organisation in the UK with this classroom teacher emphasis. Pupils and teachers generally get in touch with us by word-of-mouth. Families who use us refer us to their friends. Teachers at these top schools also refer pupils to us. We do not advertise although we are highly recommended by the Good Schools Guide. This is an independent recommendation and no payment is involved. We are professional, collegiate and friendly but our ethos is not one of a highly commercial organisation as such. We can help your child with their study skills, exam technique and revision skills. Our tutors help to reinforce and consolidate what your child is learning at school, giving them the confidence to thrive. Control Shift celebrates computational arts that explore the messy spaces in-between humans, nature and machines. We bring people together to re-imagine our relationships with technology through dialogue and arts. We live in a world where machines increasingly collect information about us, reducing our bodies and the things around us to streams of data. In turn the digital realm can feel abstract, and out of our control. The stuff of computers and digital infrastructure is often hidden out of sight and huge power imbalances exist around who is making technology and who benefits from it. Yet the impact of our interactions with machines and technologies are very much rooted in the body, materials, and emotions. Through workshops, discussions, installations and screenings Control Shift brings creative and critical approaches to technology. Control Shift 2020 was curated by Becca Rose, Martha King and Rod Dickinson, and you can visit the archive to find out more about the programme. In 2019 we produced ‘You Make the Rules’ which was part of Processing Community Day (a global celebration of ‘art, code and diversity’ initiated by the Processing Foundation). Here at Cedar Pottery, I will guide you through the various techniques in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Hand building, throwing on the wheel, sculpturing can all be tried. Glazing can be fun too and I will help you to understand this interesting part of the art of pottery. You are more than welcome to visit the studio to find out more about the environment you will be working in, the classes available and have a chat about what you want to achieve. There are six places per pottery course meaning we can tailor the classes to suit you, your level of skill and your creativity! It doesn’t matter how much potting experience you have – total beginner or happy hobby potter. I can offer one-to-one time to tutor each individual, and so the making schedule can be flexible. I am a thrower, but can also tutor in hand building and sculpture work and will take you through the various techniques needed to throw good pots. Currently I have two electric wheels. We run 2 hour taster courses, 1/2 day and one-day courses and for those who want to really develop their skill, then we have a 8 week intensive course.

We have always been passionate about helping others and, during the pandemic, we saw the anxieties of parents trying to keep up with, and understand, their child’s learning. We could see what parents really wanted was support and guidance and we started to think how we could offer this through ‘Tutor Your Child’. We decided to put together a programme which will help and guide families through each school year for maths and English, nurture confidence and mental health as well as try and support any additional needs. ‘Tutor Your Child’ is an online subscription service for parents of children Reception to Year 6, to help with maths and/or English. Each week, parents receive a short video showing them what to teach and how to teach it, with supporting activities. By the end of the academic year, parents will have covered the skills within the curriculum with their child in small, manageable steps and been part of their child’s learning journey. There will be assessment opportunities along the way so they can keep track of their child’s progress. We are passionate about children’s mental health so ‘Tutor Your Child’ includes helpful advice through regular blog articles and access to our ‘Wellbeing Zone’; offering guidance for supporting children’s self-esteem and developing a positive attitude to themselves and others.
