My name is Ian Flint and I am a pianist and piano teacher with over 25 years professional experience in music. After reaching the semi-finals of the “BBC Young Musician of the Year” competition, I went on to study for six years at the Royal Northern College of Music with the renowned Russian pedagogue Sulamita Aronovsky (founder of the London International Piano Competition). Therefore there is something of the so-called ‘Russian School’ in my musical DNA, with its focus on richness of sound coupled with economy and effectiveness of physical movement. During this period I appeared frequently as solo recitalist, chamber musician and concerto soloist in concert series and festivals, with a wide repertoire including major works by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Liszt, Debussy, Ravel, Rachmaninov, Shostakovich, Stravinsky, Barber etc. I also took part in masterclasses with Paul Badura-Skoda and Denis Matthews. For my post-graduate studies I was awarded a scholarship from the Countess of Munster Trust. These two years continued the focus on piano performance, combined with a thesis (a re-evaluation of Rachmaninov’s 1st and 4th Piano Concertos). It was also at the RNCM where I gained my first experience of teaching the piano, which I have carried on since, in combination with a career in the music publishing industry. My former company (Edition Peters) collaborated on various projects with the two main examination organisations, Associated Board (gb.abrsm.org) and Trinity (www.trinitycollege.co.uk), which gave me a valuable insight into the philosophy of the examination systems. In recent years I have given piano performances and lecture-recitals for “The Rachmaninoff Society” in several countries, in venues such as London’s South Bank Centre and New York’s Juilliard School.

I completed my MSc at the University of Hertfordshire in 2011, followed by my PhD at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) in 2019. My PhD thesis was entitled 'the influence of lower limb biomechanics on the development, persistence and management of patellofemoral pain in recreational runners'. I spent 10 years as a Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist at Pure Sports Medicine, London’s leading private Sports Medicine clinic, where I also acted as the company's Head of Research. In April 2021, I joined the School of Rehabilitation and Exercise Science at the University of Essex as a Lecturer (Education and Research) in Physiotherapy. I am also a post-doctoral Research Fellow in Sports & Exercise Medicine at QMUL and a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire, contributing to their post-graduate physiotherapy programme. I have published in several leading peer-reviewed journals, including the British Journal of Sports Medicine, Gait & Posture and Physical Therapy in Sport, where I am also an editorial advisor. My main research interests are in Patellofemoral Pain and other knee pathologies, biomechanics, running-related injury and the epidemiology of musculoskeletal conditions.

I’VE BEEN IN YOUR SHOES…. ..and ever since I’ve been on a crusade to support successful but unfulfilled mid-life professionals to find a way out of what it is they think they SHOULD be sticking with to finding a new working life chapter that fills them with joy. I spent over 20 years working in senior PR and Communication corporate roles working with some of the most famous luxury brands in the world. For many years and for the most part I loved it - I got to travel the world, meet interesting people, work on exciting projects and felt like I was ‘lucky’ to work with such companies. I moved into my forties, had my second child and as I moved into a different ‘phase’ of my life the landscape just didn't look the same any more. Don’t get me wrong there were still parts that I loved (which makes it even harder to make a change, I know and understand this…) but the corporate landscape just didn't work for me anymore. I worked long hours and travelled, hardly seeing my children except for weekends. The juggle between family life and a busy career started to take its toll (that feeling of not feeling like you are doing anything well) and of course I never had any time to take care of myself, that was definitely last on the list. Finally deep down I knew I wanted to do something different, which if you are reading this is likely to be where you are now. It was not an easy decision to make, I know that it can also feel like you are leaving a life and part of you behind. However with the help of a coach I knew it was time for a change and a new challenge that gave me the flexibility and autonomy that I craved. I retrained with The Coaching Academy the UK’s leading coaching organisation which is ICF accredited. I now work as a Career and Personal Performance Coach and NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) Practitioner.
