Reading

The Museum of English Rural Life is owned and managed by the University of Reading. We use our diverse and surprising collection to explore how the skills and experiences of farmers and craftspeople, past and present, can help shape our lives now and into the future. We work alongside rural people, local communities and specialist researchers to create displays and activities that engage with important debates about the future of food and the ongoing relevance of the countryside to all our lives. We were established by academics in the Department of Agriculture in 1951 to capture and record the rapidly changing countryside following World War II. The Museum is based on Redlands Road in a building originally designed by Sir Alfred Waterhouse in 1880 for local businessman Alfred Palmer, of the Huntley & Palmer biscuit company. The house then became St Andrews Hall of Residence in 1911, and in 2005 a modern extension was built onto the house for the Museum. The Museum was awarded £1.8million from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) in 2014 for the redevelopment of the galleries, reopening in October 2016. The redevelopment strengthens and renews our links with agriculture as well as enhancing our position in supporting engagement opportunities for students and academics across a wide variety of disciplines, nationally and internationally. The MERL and Reading Museum are currently in a strategic partnership as part of the Arts Council England National Portfolio 2018-2022. As Museums Partnership Reading we work together to provide cultural opportunities for Reading’s young people and diverse communities, through schools, volunteering, digital engagement and exhibitions. Class Yoga

class yoga

London

After a four year degree studying French, German and Spanish - I decided the obvious thing to do next was teach English in Japan! Random - but I’m so thankful I made this decision: because it was my introduction to teaching and set me on the path as an educator. 3 years later, I trained as a yoga teacher in Scotland, before moving to Cornwall and deciding I wanted to be a Primary School Teacher. I wanted to share with kids so much about life and the world! Teaching was, admittedly, harder than expected. I loved elements but hated others. I’d always prioritised my health and wellbeing - but I found myself becoming stressed like I’d never experienced before. I know now that if I’d have continued to prioritise my own wellbeing, not only would teaching have been easier - but the children would have also benefited so much more. This is one of the key reasons Class Yoga is here: to raise the wellbeing of educators, so that the pupils benefit in turn. (Listen to more on this, here.) I believe we need to look after our own wellbeing to raise the wellbeing of our pupils I started to share yoga when I could. I got to see what worked and what didn’t; and I got a glimpse of some promising results. But when I left full-time teaching and started supply (and sharing more yoga) I started getting called back - to teach yoga! Because now the clear evidence, of greater calm and focus in children in the classroom after yoga, was shining out! So began my calling to teach yoga to more children, in more schools. Over this time, I developed and refined my method of teaching mindful movement to children, that I still teach and train others in, today. You can transform your classroom & young lives through authentic & beneficial mindful movement

London Academy of Irish Dance

london academy of irish dance

In September 2016 the London Academy was launched in East London by champion level dancer Erin Coyle. The aim was to provide Irish dance and culture activities to the people from what used to be a heavily Irish influenced area. Erin, who is of Irish descent and grew up in East London, has been dancing since the age of seven and quickly fell in love with the sport and regularly competed all over England until the age of fifteen. After finishing college, and spending a few years establishing a career as a chef in Michelin star restaurants, Erin was offered a job in House of Lords which gave her the weekends off, so at the age of 21, she came back to Irish Dance. In was a matter of months Erin started to compete and quickly climbed to championship level again. Since then she has gained 2nd at All Irelands, 3rd at British, Irish and German Open and in 2018 became a world medal holder for the first time after placing 11th place at the WIDA World Championships. Erin combines her love of travel and Irish dancing and has attended feis (Irish dance competitions) all over Europe including Latvia, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, and Romania as well as all over the UK and Ireland. Travelling is highly encouraged at London Academy as Erin believes it brings new, fun and exciting experiences to dancers and helps to promote Irish dance in areas where the interest is still building. London Academy now offers classes all over London for dancers of all ages (including adults) and abilities. The academy focuses heavily on making Irish dance a fun and interesting way to keep fit and for those who wish to do so may compete and will be provided all the support they need to reach their goals.
