Bourne

These local Bourne residents describe their experience of Big Tom Driving School: Kyle Starbuck from Billingborough “Brilliant for practising all aspects of driving in the safest way, as well as gaining and maintaining confidence” Dalton Marsh from Bourne who passed his driving test on his first attempt on Day 5 of his intensive driving course: “I enjoyed his teaching style, calm and patient which suited my learning style” Georgia Galloway from Bourne “My experience of learning to drive was very positive thanks to my lessons with Tom. I started out with very little time behind the wheel but was helped to feel very calm and relaxed. He adapts the learning techniques to you as an individual, ensuring you learn at your own pace. I started out with very little confidence, but thanks to Tom and his calming influence this was overcome quite quickly. Mock tests helped me prepare for the real practical test and assisted in reducigeorgia galloway from Bourneng my nerves for test day. I knew what to expect so there were never any surprises. Tom also has lots of useful videos online which help with tackling more difficult techniques or situations. Overall my experience was fantastic and I would recommend anyone looking to start driving to give Tom a call!” Oliver Stephenson from Carlby “I started driving with Tom after failed a test with another instructor. He built my confidence by giving me clear instruction on how to improve my driving. He used different techniques to show what to do. I found the mock tests we did really helpful and showed me exactly what the examiner would be looking for. Driving every day with Tom gave me much more experience than having a lesson weekly. Tom made everything easy by booking my initial test and then finding me a cancellation because he thought I was ready to take my test earlier. On day 5 I took my test and passed with no driver errors. I would definitely recommend Big Tom Driving School and wish I’d gone with Tom in the first place.”

Healds Green Gallery

Oldham

After leaving art college with a diploma in Art and Design, I left the world of art and spent the next 20 years working in marketing and account management, and bringing up my son. I didn't have much time to dedicate to my love of art, but now my son is much older, so I have more time on my hands to create the art that I love. I started out painting flowers and landscapes, which I shipped all over the UK and USA and a few even went to Australia! My love of animals has always been there, I've had horses and so many dogs and cats from being really young, so it was only natural that animals feature regularly in my art. My artwork has more recently turned towards painting dancers, landscapes, and the beach too. I love to paint in watercolour, in acrylics or in oils, and regularly create different collections in these different mediums. I set up Healds Green Gallery, named after the converted church that we currently live in, and run workshops from the gallery in Chadderton and also from locations in Cheshire too. We have classes starting in January in Tatton Park in Knutsford which is such a beautiful place to visit! We run watercolour and acrylic classes and sometimes branch out by getting other expert tutors in to provide glass craft and pottery workshops too. All of our classes are perfect for beginners or people who have always wanted to try painting but don't have the equipment, or never get round to it at home. Having had young children, it sometimes feels quite self-indulgent to spend time doing something that is just for you, but you deserve that time. I love every minute I spend drawing and painting, its time spent solely concentrating on just that, and not worrying about other things. My aim is to share my love of art to everyone and to make you all feel good enough to come along and try it out. You don't have to be the next Rembrandt, just come along and enjoy the time. I hope I can tempt you to want to try it out yourself and join us on one of our workshops!

Camp Crusoe

Salisbury

Camp Crusoe is the quintessentially British summer camp experience where campers feel connected, valued, challenged, and supported. We take having fun incredibly seriously and believe that as modern childhood is all too short we must help our kids make the most of every moment of it. While school work is a vital part of our children’s development, so too is holiday time: Camp Crusoe is very much a fun and adventurous camp and not a summer school! We are the perfect size. There are plenty of opportunities to make new friends with no more than 80 campers per session. We know every camper by name, what interests them, if they need extra support or just an open stage to shine. Over the course of camp, community bonds are forged that last well after campers return home, sometimes a lifetime. Having seen first hand how our American cousins get it so right when it comes to summer camps, we feel it is essential that every child has the opportunity to get away from home each year and enjoy a new environment, testing themselves, trying new things and making new friends, all while having fun in the great outdoors. Too much time seems to be spent cooped up with electronic gadgetry of one sort or another when there is so much fun to be had outdoors, playing with other kids in a safe and controlled setting. Our extensive program of activities from water-sports to drama, archery to photography, appeal to every type of child, offering the opportunity for each camper to grow in confidence, improve their decision making skills and maybe discover a new lifelong hobby. We don’t try to cram too much in and allow just the right amount of time for campers to hangout, make new friends and play together. We are a small, independent camp run by a close-knit team of friends and family who are committed to enriching children’s lives. The core group have many years experience working with children both on summer camps and in the classroom, and are supported by a highly trained and motivated team of camp counsellors, many of whom have worked at camp before and are planning a career working with children. Camp Crusoe is about allowing children the time and space to be exactly that - children. Fun and personal development is our ultimate aim, but we also know from experience how much children learn at camp, both about themselves and about being part of something larger than them. We hope you agree and come join us for the Camp Crusoe experience!

Shine Cancer Support

Poole

Shine is the only UK charity that support adults in their 20s, 30s and 40s who have experienced a cancer diagnosis. There is never a good time to have cancer, but we know that younger adults face different issues than their older or younger counterparts. Many of these are not dealt with by traditional cancer support charities and services. Our vision, mission and strategy In January 2022, we finalised a new five-year strategy. We have updated our vision and mission statements and articulated our values. We will use these to underpin five strategic objectives that will guide Shine’s focus and attention between 2022 and 2027. Vision We want every adult in their 20s, 30s and 40s who is diagnosed with cancer to know they’re not alone, and to have the support, knowledge, and confidence to navigate whatever cancer throws their way. Mission There’s never a good time for a cancer diagnosis, but in your 20s, 30s or 40s there are particular challenges to navigate, like work, dating, finances and more. At Shine, we’ve been there and we get it. We’re here to help you deal with everything that your diagnosis brings, before, during and after treatment, and to welcome you into our community. Our values Inclusive – Our services are open to anyone in their 20s, 30s and 40s with a cancer diagnosis, no matter what type or stage, when your diagnosis was, or what your background is. Approachable – We want everyone in Shine’s community to feel welcomed and to feel able to get involved, and we design all our services to be friendly, fun and down-to-earth. Authentic – We’re patient-led and passionate, and we want everyone involved to have a genuine and honest voice, with patients at the heart of our work. Innovative – As a small charity, we’re adaptable and agile, and we are responsive to needs as they change. We listen to what Shine’s community is saying and strive to find practical solutions. Empowering – Our services aren’t about us “doing” to or “for” you. We want to empower you to ask the right questions, get the right information, take control, and make the best decisions for yourself. Our strategic objectives Connect – build a nationwide community of younger adults with cancer and the people around them, reducing isolation and supporting their physical and mental well-being. Inform – ensure that younger adults with cancer have access to the knowledge and support they need to make the best decisions for them. Influence – grow our influencing position and partnerships to shape a healthcare system and wider support that is suitable for the needs of young adults with cancer. Reach – increase the profile and reach of Shine, aiming for every young adult diagnosed with cancer to have access to our services and support. Build – invest in Shine’s internal capacity, governance and sustainability to build firm foundations for growth. Our goal is for these strands to come together to enable better wellbeing for younger adults with cancer, improved relationships and less isolation, more informed decision-making, and systems that are better able to meet our community’s needs. Our history Shine started in Dorset in 2008 as a non-traditional support group for young adults. Emma and Justine were both diagnosed with cancer at a young age and had a hard time finding others that the could relate to. They realised there was a huge lack of support for younger adults with cancer and the idea for Shine was born. Within the first year, they had connected with over 100 young adults in Dorset. In 2010, Emma met Ceinwen. They launched Shine in London and the UK’s first research into the unmet needs of young adults diagnosed with cancer. Ceinwen and Emma then developed events and activities that would support the gaps identified in the research. Shine was registered as a charity in 2012, and has since supported thousands across the UK Shine has local Shine Networks across the UK and runs a number of annual events including Shine Camp, the Great Escape retreat, and Shine Connect, the UK’s only conference for young adults with cancer. Shine also runs a number of highly-rated workshops on topics such as working after cancer and managing anxiety and depression. As a patient-led organisation, Shine works hard to ensure that young adults with cancer play a key role in the design and delivery of all activities. Shine is supported by a Board of Trustees as well as a patron, Oliver Spencer, and a number of corporate supporters including TTA and Travel Insurance Facilities.
