The Power of Mediation in Business and Relationships by Bernadette Willems “I’ve had enough….” “How do I leave my husband….” “They are just not listening….” “How can we stop this from getting ugly….” “It’ll be lonely this Christmas….” “We’ve tried everything, and nothing is working….” “I’ve had enough of life….” These are just some comments I hear daily in my role as The Business Peacemaker and The Post-Divorce Specialist at Greater Manchester Mediation Limited. With more than 25 years of experience as a Family Solicitor, Mediator, Trainer and Coach in the field of conflict resolution, I help people lead a better life and a brighter future free from debilitating disputes – thereby helping to create a better world for all of us. The key to this is ‘Mediation’. But what is it, and how does it work? As founder of Greater Manchester Mediation Limited, and as ‘The Business Peacemaker’ and ‘The Post-Divorce Specialist’, I show my clients primarily how to communicate with each other. This is vital, as it ensures that vulnerable or emotionally fragile clients feel heard and empowered, and it rebuilds bridges between estranged parties. I am also there to support my clients in navigating the legal process, helping them understand the requirements of law and to find the best route to resolve their disputes. In addition, I ensure that they are not overwhelmed by all the information available and help them determine their best course of action. Many disputes or problems between individuals, in personal or work relationships or within teams, are compounded or aggravated because clients do not understand each other’s way of thinking, together with the legal (and other) options available to them. Crucially, with the benefit of this legal knowledge, together with the life and personal development tools and resources I share with my clients, they can identify ways of building or maintaining trust, despite the past. Mediated solutions work better, last longer and cost far less than solutions imposed by a tribunal or a court, and everyone involved buys into them. Moreover, they are less adversarial, and Mediation fosters mutual respect through improved communication. Mediation can mend and preserve frayed relationships, even when the parties are extremely angry.

Way back in 2002 I took my first breath underwater using scuba equipment. I absolutely loved it! A couple of years later I was in the car with my mum when we went past a sign that said 'Learn to scuba dive today!' We had booked the experience before we got home! A couple of months later I was given a voucher for the PADI Open Water Diver course. We travelled up to Stoney Cove in November 2004 for what I mainly remember as a very cold experience. I was soon a qualified Junior PADI Open Water Diver! I eventually signed up for my DiveMaster course in 2011 - the first professional level when you begin taking responsibility for other divers' training! I loved helping with courses and seeing the sense of achievement on peoples' faces - I could really relate to it - however, I was soon convinced to sign up for my instructor course. I've been a PADI Course Director since 2018 and have had the pleasure of teaching candidates from all walks of life and being just a small part of their journey to what might become a full-time career. I love teaching the professional courses but feel just as comfortable teaching a DSD or Seal Team Course (I am still a child at heart!) If you join an IDC with me, you'll benefit from tailored scheduling to suit your availability and a CD who uses the latest and most up to date tools from PADI to teach you. I am passionate about being inclusive and believe that 'one size definitely does not fit all'. I've had the privilege of instructing in quite a few places around the world, teaching in Egypt, Spain, Kenya, and various countries in the Caribbean. Although by far not an expert in all these different regions, I've learnt a lot about the specific challenges that various areas face.

Beulah is an outward looking church, interested in Rhiwbina and concerned about the wider world. We describe our style of church life as liberal but lively encouraging participation in worship in which we mix traditional hymnody and new music from the world church. We encourage a thoughtful faith, questioning and exploring together what we understand the Bible and faith means today. We have adopted a range of worship patterns. Our main service is Family Worship on a Sunday morning. This gathers all ages together, there is a Junior Church catering for all ages and we have a crèche. The service lasts an hour and a quarter or so and there is coffee after the service. In addition to the service on a Sunday there is one other mid-week service. Meeting Point is primarily a gathering where we share readings for the week and pastoral news. Beulah Church affirms that Christ welcomed all into his company without exception. He did not judge who people were, though he challenged how people behaved towards each other. We believe God calls all kinds of people to work and witness in his name and we want all to feel welcome and included in all aspects of Beulah’s life and leadership. We acknowledge that we have not always lived up to Christ’s standard of warmth and welcome.
