Tenacious. Terrific. Trustworthy. Truthful. And sometimes Trouble. When you ask my family, friends and coworkers about me, they will probably list these attributes. Or qualities. For good and for bad. I am the only child to my mother Grace and my father Ken who met in Blackpool, England during the Second World War, which means much of my family resides in England. Including my daughter who met my son-in-law during her junior year abroad at Oxford University. I grew up not knowing that my mother had an accent, never understanding the difference between English and American terminology so that even today I will say a word and people will look perplexed, and I realize I am using the English word and not the American one. I’m an only child because my parents decided traveling back to England would be very difficult with more children. My father made a point to keep me from being spoiled which was a double-edged sword because his lack of praise left me with a feeling that I had to try twice as hard as anyone else just to keep up. The end result is one very motivated woman, and I constantly seek continued learning and new challenges. My first words were undoubtedly “When are you going to give me a horse?” and thus Patience Prize and I became a team when I was 14. My father once again made sure I knew the horse was not to be taken for granted when he said, “Now you’ve got a horse, you’d better get a job. And you won’t be paid for mowing the lawn anymore.” My love of animals produced my first job at the local veterinarians cleaning up cages and feeding animals. One small dog had broken her two front legs, was terribly vicious, and no one could touch her. After her surgery she was crammed up in a corner while still asleep, and I moved her into a more comfortable position and, of course, petted her and spoke to her. After that I was the only one who could open her cage and touch her without getting bitten. She must have known my smell. Years passed and I became both a photojournalist and regular journalist with local Berkshire County Massachusetts newspapers. When I returned to college to complete my bachelor’s degree, my journalism provided me with life experience credits and thus I completed my BA in English. What to do next? I had student loans, so I needed either grad school or a second job. My daughter waitressed at a local restaurant open only on weekends and they said they needed a dishwasher, so she said, “My brother needs a job.” Then they asked, “So who else do you have at home?” and she said, “My mom.” Thus, I tried the second job routine as a waitress. We served wine in long-stemmed glasses and carried them on a tray. During one shift I was at a table of two women and the tray started to tilt, and I couldn’t stop it! So, I stood there and watched the wine glasses crash down on the table and splash everywhere. It was not a happy time for all involved. So, I said, “That’s it, I’m going to grad school.” I took my daughter and son to see Phantom of the Opera on Broadway, we ate at the Russian Tea Room, and I told them they couldn’t bug me for two years. The non-traditional program at Vermont College of Norwich University was a full-time program so I had a full-time job, a full-time grad school program, a son in high school and a daughter in college. During my internship I worked 7:00 a.m. to noon, drove to Albany, New York (a one-hour drive one way), worked at a public relations firm from 1:00 to 6:00 and stopped at the restaurant where my two offspring worked about 7:00 for a glass of wine and a light dinner. Then I realized I didn’t have time to clean the bathroom, so I hired a cleaning lady (very inexpensive in a small town back then) and decided that was an expense associated with grad school. That was a valuable decision. The downside of a small town is that a master’s degree doesn’t allow for many jobs at a living wage. I decided I would move. After networking for several years and finding a church in Washington, DC I moved to northern Virginia on October 2, 1999, never having lived more than 6 miles from where I was born. I got a job the second day. I bought a house that January and a horse, Sonny Madison, in January 2001 and have never regretted my choice or looked back. At some point in 2018 I found Her Nexx Chapter and started writing for them. It provides me with a chance to get in touch with my creative style since my most prevalent job has been a technical writer. Now I’m also the Editorial Project Director and a member of the Advisory Board. It’s a tremendous value to women everywhere, and I always enjoying learning something new and sharing my blogs with the community. So here I am. I’m still horseback riding and trying to keep fit. I try to look for the positive side of life even in times of turmoil – notice I said “try” because sometimes life gets to be a tad difficult. But that’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

Glenbervie Kindergarden and GX out of school club is a family run business which helps to provide the best start in life for children, in a homely like environment which promotes emotional wellbeing and togetherness. Children are at the heart of what we do and parents and families involvement are of the upmost importance. Glenbervie Kindergarden has been established for and providing care to children from birth to primary seven for almost 20 years. Each of our settings are unique and all offer the same high quality of care and education that our parents expect. The settings have all been refurbished quite recently to a bright, modern standard and all facilities are well resourced. Within our settings we offer a child centered approach, we encourage the children to be involved in their own learning and their achievements celebrated. Our staff create happy, caring and stimulating environments in which each child can develop, build confidence and can become more independant in their own right. For our younger children we have a range of baby and toddler rooms, designed to nurture and support the development of each individual child. For our older children in the Explorer rooms, we offer a breadth of learning experiences, where our skilled staff are confident in enhancing and deepening the child's learning. Our out of school Clubs offer fun, stimulating environments where children can socialise, play and relax before or after a busy day at school. Our nurseries and out of school facilities put a strong emphasis on learning outdoors and all settings have their own outdoor areas to support and extend your child's learning and exploration. Adventures outwith the gardens include visits such as, the local park, the library, garden centre or other landmarks, this helps to build the child's sense of connection with the local community. Our staff team have a wealth of experience and qualifications and are all registered with the Scottish Social Services Council and have up to date PVG checks. We also hold two competitions each year: an open tournament in Spring around April and in Winter in November. We also have a squad of students who regularly compete both here in the UK and overseas at national and international levels. Social events are held throughout the year where students and families from different locations can meet and get to know one another. Our club has an ‘open door’ policy, so if you are affiliated with another style, club or association, you are welcome to come and train with us and there will be no pressure to join. We hold classes for children (aged 5 – 12yrs), teens & adults, and mixed age group classes where the whole family can train together as well as specialist senior grade classes and private one-to-one tuition. Karate is a proven system of self-protection. It is NOT an aerobic class. It is NOT intended to better a person’s confidence or self-esteem. However, if you practice karate do properly and correctly, you will develop improved confidence, gain muscle tone and strength, lose weight, and more. Keep this in mind and you will gain more from your training than you could ever expect. Kinesiology is the scientific study of the principles of body mechanics and anatomy in relation to movement. With that understanding in mind, Karate is the scientific study of body mechanics and anatomy in relation to health and self-protection. Seitou Ryu Karate® is a great way to get into shape. On top of that, you will learn other skills while you tone muscle and feel better about yourself. Unlike aerobic classes or gyms, you will never feel out of place in our karate classes. Our karate classes are taught from an understanding of human anatomy and physiology, psychology and an intricate knowledge of the art itself. Seitou Ryu Karate® is a great distraction from everyday stress and strain. More medical problems today are being associated with or directly caused by mental and physical stress. Your classes will serve as mini vacations 2 to 4 times per week. Not only will you feel more relaxed but you will actually notice increased productivity in your daily life. Today’s society puts a great deal of importance on self-dependence. Nothing takes the place of feeling secure in your daily life. A successful career can be a determining factor for financial security. Our classes help build physical and psychological security through building confidence in the student’s abilities. What you learn in our classes could save you or a loved one’s life. Our life-protection techniques and principles are practical and our training, though conducted under safe learning conditions, allows for the most realism possible. Seitou Ryu Karate® is not based on competition-play karate. You will learn techniques that are “up close and personal”. Our classes are fun. You will be mentally and physically challenged in a relaxed atmosphere. It has been proven that people learn faster and retain more when they are having fun.

Encouraged as a small child by an artistic mother, I always sketched family members and pets, being able to capture a good likeness. From school through to college, my ability to draw became apparent and was recognised throughout my home town of Colchester in Essex. I had taken to pastels after years of painting in watercolour. The transition happened when working on a portrait….. "With watercolours I couldn't keep the smooth texture of the skin and the more I worked at it, the rougher the 'skin' got. Frustrated, I picked up a box of pastels that I'd had from college and almost closed my eyes as I chalked over the face I'd been working on for hours, cringing with the fear of having to throw the whole picture in the bin…. I smudged it over with my finger. The result was amazingly smooth and definitely 'skin' like. I put away the watercolours and invested in many shades of quality pastels". In 1997 and keen to enter into the art world, I offered my services to organisations to produce promotional portraits which came with good media coverage and helped my business catapult within its first year. I was introduced to various artists and teachers and was offered a place to work alongside Royal portrait artist Richard Stone who had admired my work through the local press. In 2003 I took up teaching art within local clubs and private classes, holding exhibitions and encouraging 11 to 16 year olds to develop their artistic talents with workshops using different mediums. From 2008, I had the immense pleasure of working with Colchester Zoo in Essex when I became their Artist in Residence. From holding art classes in the Zoo and working with children during the school holidays to portray their favourite animals, one of my greatest adventures was to work closely with the Zoo's great managerial team on their 'Stand Tall' project for their 50th anniversary. This saw many local artists give up their time to design and create personal works of art on 2.5m giraffe sculptures. These were then displayed around Colchester and even took a tour to London's South Bank before they came back to the Zoo for auction. It was with much excitement to see one of my giraffes (Big Catrina) sell to the highest bidder at £6800. Developing very unique drawing skills, I have helped students from all over the world with many varying art abilities to accomplish their artistic dreams. With a limited palette of chalks, and a vast experience in pastel application, my teaching took me to places I hadn't even dreamed of. Constantly moving forward and learning new ways to pass on my skills, I would say that teaching students of all ages is in my blood now. It has become a passion to show others the beauty of this versatile medium.

Mr. Hamidi was born in Morocco, spent a part of his childhood in France and has been a Florida resident since 1998. He graduated with a dual M.S. degree in Biomedical Engineering & Engineering Management from the University of South Florida, and a dual B.S. degree in Mechanical & Electrical Engineering from University of Florida. Throughout his education and work experience, Mr. Hamidi has gained valuable experience in the field of leadership, research, education & management. He also has taught in Private and Charter Schools (K-12) including Nur Academy in 2019-2020. Brother Karim is very happy to be back and look forward to a great year ahead inshallah. Amel Abosamek Amel Abosamek is a homeroom teacher at Nur Academy. She was born in Alexandria, Egypt and earned her BS in Chemical Engineering from Alexandria University. Sister Amel has completed several professional development and educator training programs. She has 17 years of experience teaching Math and Science for all levels up to 8th grade. Jamila Ali Mrs. Ali. will be our Kindergarten/First grade teacher during the 2022-2023 academic year. She was born and raised in Sarasota, Florida and have been here for 30 years! Mrs. Ali grew up within the Muslim ISSB community and she is so honored to finally be giving back to the community by teaching our young Muslim children and much more. She graduated as an Education major from University of South Florida. She loves to read, cook, and spend time with her family in her spare time. Rana Elshamy Rana Elshamy received her B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from University of South Florida. After graduation, she realized that she was a teacher at heart, so she decided to pursue a career in teaching. Sister Rana has more than 12 years of experience at teaching. She has taught in different Islamic schools as well as at some public/charter schools. She is very excited to be part of Nur Acade Dina Gadelhaq Dina Gadelhaq teaches Quran and Arabic at Nur Academy. She was born and raised in Egypt and earned her BS in Accounting from Cairo University. She is a certified Nuraniyah teacher and has taught Quran and Arabic at Nur Academy for the past 4 years. Dina’s favorite quote is “teach your kids Quran and Quran will teach them everything.” ABOUT NUR ACADEMY Nur Academy is an independent, nonprofit, private Islamic school located in Sarasota, Florida. The approach I take within my work comes from my own life experiences, extensive training and research, my interest in fellow human beings and a deep longing to share with others my knowledge of self-development, spirituality and natural healing. I graduated in Biology at Durham University in the 1980s and I entered the workplace at the Science Museum in London. Science and particularly the Medical Sciences were my first loves, however a taste of the stress and pressure of city life, led me to take off on a travelling adventure and find out what it was I really wished for out of life. Whilst living and working in South East Asia I gravitated towards Buddhism and the Ayurvedic approach to wellness and health. I took a course in 'Chakra Consciousness' in India where I qualified as a teacher. This changed my whole outlook and meditation/natural healing became part of my life and it stuck. On returning to the UK, two children later, and having decided to completely switch career, I worked in a Natural Health business whilst further training in Stress Therapy, Holistic Massage, Acupressure and Reiki Healing. I opened my first 'Holistic Wellbeing' clinic in Wetherby in 2006 and then 'Qui Wellbeing' in Sicklinghall and I have now worked 1:1 with a wide range of clients. In 2017 I qualified as a Mindfulness Association teacher and UK registered with the British Association of Mindfulness Based Approaches following the UK good practice guidelines. In 2019 I qualified as a Compassion Based Living Teacher with the Mindfulness Association. In recent years I have delivered Mindfulness based interventions to recovering addicts (5-ways academy in Leeds), vulnerable adults (Harrogate Homeless Project), leaders working with vulnerable adults, stressed city workers (NHS digital Leeds), sixth formers (Harrogate Grammar school) and I am currently working with University of Leeds on research funded by the Medical Research Council into approaches to mental health in adolescents. Recently I recorded a professionally produced audio version of the MBLC course for the Mindfulness Association. I continue to deliver to private clients and groups at the Acorn Wellness Retreat and at Carlshead Business Centre. I am now very happily part of the Kagyu sangha of Tibetan Buddhism and practice at Samye Dzong, Samye Ling and with Mindsprings. I regularly attend immersive retreats. I combine my multi-disciplinary skills, my extensive client-based experience and my deep belief in the power of Mindfulness to create a unique and considered approach to personal wellness and natural health. Communicating through social media, magazine articles and blogs keeps me abreast of new developments and research into my diverse areas of interest. Other than that, I am committed to be happy and compassionate in my work, with my family, with the people I meet and the world around me. I am very grateful to my many guides and influences.
