I am a Devon based textile artist creating contemporary textile art inspired by the coast and countryside. With no formal training I took up free motion machine embroidery in 2012 and over time I have gravitated towards textile art, developing my own unique style by using organza and net to give a soft watercolour feel to my work. Working loosely from photographs, but often directly from my imagination, each piece of my work evolves as it is created. I prefer not to use a sketchbook, instead allowing my creativity to guide me as each piece develops. Colour and texture are big influences for me and where possible I prefers to source up cycled textiles for their variety and individuality. I love the idea that these materials can be given a new purpose, and can be appreciated in a totally different way for many more years to come. As well as my original artwork my range also includes digital and giclee fine art prints, greeting cards and textile art kits, all of which can be found in my Etsy shop https://www.etsy.com/shop/AlisonWhateley?ref=hdr_shop_menu I also welcome commissions of all sizes, and will work with you to get the result you are looking for. I get great pleasure from passing on my knowledge and skills to others, and run regular workshops close to my home, as well as providing talks and day workshops to groups such as the WI and embroiderers Guild.

So, who are Copycast Studios and where did it all begin? Take a look at the timeline below to see our journey... 2005 Dean & Natalie made the first mould of their newborn baby's foot in their kitchen using some leftover body-casting material that Dean was using for a replica movie prop project. After copies are given to relatives, positive feedback sparks a new business idea. I 2006 With research and a business plan, Dean & Natalie stumble across a vacant shop at Hatton Country World. Copycast Studios opens it's first premises in April 2006, leaving their salaried careers behind. I 2008 Shop premises closes. However, a steady growth and a customer-base covering The West Midlands, The Cotswolds, Birmingham, Worcestershire and Warwickshire (and occasionally other areas) sees the mobile baby casting service launched instead. I 2009 Copycast Studios starts making their own line of shadow box frames and keepsakes including personalised giftware. I 2010/11 Ebay shop opens selling DIY casting kits, box frames, casting materials and other keepsakes. Orders start coming in and we are sending parcels all over the country and even abroad. I 2019 After taking a back seat in place of other projects, a re-launch is planned that includes a new website focussing on casting services and DIY casting kits. I 2020 Copycast Studios continues to grow an online presence with shops on Etsy, eBay, MadeMe and the launch of the new website. I The future... With the outbreak of COVID-19, it's clear that the way we interact with each other and shop will change forever. Therefore, we'll adapt and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to create a beautiful keepsake of their own with more and more DIY casting kits and socially-distanced casting sessions. I’m Sharon. I've been sewing and making stuff for as long as I can remember and went on to study Embroidered Textile design at Glasgow School of Art, but my interest in textiles goes way beyond stitch and I have a range of textiley skills which I bring to my work. I always wanted to learn to crochet when I was wee but with no-one to teach me it took until 2011 when I decided I was just going to have to teach myself! I was too impatient to take it step by step so jumped straight in at the deep end and just had a go at all the things I really wanted to learn to make - flowers, fruit, vegetables, animals, Amigurumi; regardless of whether the pattern said they were for beginner, intermediate or expert! Within a month or 2 I was doing some simple designing and began selling crocheted goodies and patterns through my Etsy shop. I'm totally hooked! Making up for lost time I literally haven't put my crochet hook down as I continue to fine tune, develop skills and discover even more. My approach to teaching is pretty similar. Learning a new craft is all about repitition but that doesn't mean you have to make things just for the sake of it, or because someone says it's suitable for a beginner. I would encourage anyone thinking about taking up crochet or looking to develop their skills to choose things to make that appeal to you, why not challenge yourself and I'll do my best to help and encourage you along the way. I firmly believe that if you love what you're making, even if it's a little beyond your skill level, you're more likely to enjoy, learn and be inspired by the process. And the results are all the more rewarding, even if they're not always perfect. But if you prefer to build your skills from the basics up I do suggest what skill level classes are suitable for and how tricky they are on the fiddly diddly scale! Everything we make during a CAL is designed by me and patterns are written using US crochet terms. You can create the most amazing things with the most basic of stitches and that's what I try to highlight as a designer, but I don't always do things the easiest way; where necessary I prefer to show you slightly more advanced techniques and share tips that I think will help you achieve a better and neater finish to your projects; things I wish someone had been able to show me when I was learning. Crochet-Alongs are held online via Zoom with patterns and access being sent the evening before. On the day I have an additional camera to give guests close up hand views as we're working. A Sew Silly Lily Crochet-Along is an amazing opportunity for me to share my passion for crochet and hopefully inspire you to find out more about this beautiful and versatile craft.
