In 1968 at a meeting of the Parish Council of Aldingbourne it was agreed that there was a definite need to build a modern community centre to serve the village. 12 years later, and at a cost of £100,000,David Purley Aldingbourne Community Centre was completed. It was officially opened on 29th March 1980 by local racing driver David Purley the son of Charles Purley, the founder of LEC Refrigeration. The Centre is built on the playing fields originally managed by the Aldingbourne Sports Council. In 1972 the Sports Council formed the 200 Club to raise money for the project. Concise Construction Ltd of Barnham were given the contract and together with Mr Peter Lovett plans were drawn up. inside-hall-2 Planning permission was first granted in 1977 but was revised in 1978. With grants from the Department of the Environment, West Sussex County Council, Arun District Council the Association were all set to begin work. But it was not to be as straightforward as that. Problems arose concerning an access road and time ticked by. With the knowledge that if work didn’t start on site by a certain time they would lose their grants, the association pressed to reach an agreement. inside-bar-1 Eventually, in March 1979 an agreement was signed and work started immediately. The delay however, had cost the Association money. The original quote of £72,000 for the construction of the building no longer applied and the new cost was set up as £93,931.38p. By the time internal fittings, alarms and other equipment had been fitted the centre cost £100,000.

WEST is a small charity with a big aim: to inspire girls and women to study and work in non-traditional trades and careers like engineering.Wendy Miller “I was the first full-time female student to study engineering at Sheffield College. After employment as a draughtsperson and engineering project manager, I have worked in education since 2004. I am now Learning and Teaching Lead at the AMRC Training Centre, run by the University of Sheffield, which delivers Engineering Apprenticeships from Advanced to Degree Level. I joined WEST because I believe passionately that we need to actively change women’s perception of STEM careers – and men’s perception of women in engineering! There is a world of opportunity out there for young women and we are missing a lot of talent.” Pat Morton (Chair) Pat Morton (Chair) “I spent 20 years in the construction industry as a surveyor and another 20 years in Higher Education working in equality – particularly gender equality – in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) and built environment. When Ros Wall died we wanted to do something active to remember her. She was a real activist so we decided to set up WEST and support a cause dear to Ros’s heart.” Saj Parveen Saj Parveen “I undertook a foundation course in engineering at Sheffield College / Sheffield Hallam University, followed by a degree in engineering, and then a postgraduate certificate. I’m now a senior lecturer in mechanical design engineering. I love developing and inspiring the next generation of engineers and especially keen to see more women becoming engineers, which is why I got involved with WEST.”

Building on Betel UK’s 25-year track record as a national charity helping the marginalised, homeless and addicted, Anchor Point will address head-on the hardships of social exclusion, substance dependencies, family breakdown and unemployment in one of Britain’s most under-resourced urban wards. The three-fold vision is: to create a thriving community hub that integrates seven family-friendly businesses, each serving the public, that simultaneously deliver a range of employment skills and addictions- recovery training all under one roof. Anchor Point will offer a safe, welcoming environment to residents and university students of greater Aston where they can flourish. Hundreds will enjoy an impressive restaurant serving homemade food, drinks and baked goods, affordable arts performance and fitness training, a children’s softplay arena, a gender-neutral hair and nail salon, catered banqueting, plus multi-purpose meeting and conference facilities for hire. All these diverse activities inter-link, sharing one 40,000-square-foot building just outside the boundary of Birmingham’s Clear Air Zone. When compared to most other social inclusion models nationwide, Anchor Point’s multi-purpose skills training sets it apart as truly exceptional. All seven social enterprises will be staffed by recovering Betel residents, each a member of our successful, therapeutic, work-based recovery model. This means that Anchor Point not only promises essential socialising for scores of city-wide youths and families. But it will also serve as a healing, restorative workplace, helping men and women to break with substance and welfare dependencies alike. Together, the businesses will simultaneously train for future employment more than 60 men and women in the process of rebuilding their lives and families after years of life-controlling drugs and alcohol addictions, homelessness and criminal offending. Anchor Point revives the power of local community. It is a visionary investment in lives where restored men and women, now clean from addictive substances, re-build confidence and a vitally important work ethic as they “give back” to others. Inner city neighbours are likewise enriched, embracing old friends and new relationships in an atmosphere of belonging, leisure, learning and personal growth. The outcome? The Cookery Courses Courses are either half-day or full-day. On the full-day course, attendees will spend the morning or evening preparing the recipes and then enjoy what they have prepared at a sit down meal. The courses are taught in a small group setting, with a mixture of hands-on cooking and demonstration, in a fun and friendly setting within our home. You can book a course as individuals, where you will have a chance to make new friends or book as a group of friends, family or work colleagues, to have a fun day together! The cooking classes offer a great team building opportunity. As such, I also run Corporate and Team Building workshops. There are further courses specifically for children and young persons ( I am DBS registered) and those with particular dietary requirements. Please contact me for further information. There is something for everyone! Book to attend for special occasions, be they birthdays, anniversaries, Valentines, Mother’s and Father’s Day or other personal milestones – the list goes on.
