Throughout the years we have been developing a collaborative network of interests and opportunities for the Romanian community living in the UK, contributing to England's multicultural milieu. We facilitate cultural exchanges between Britain and Romania, constantly aiming to improve our relationship. RCC also provides an up to date Guide containing information about Romanian institutions, organisations, businesses and services in the UK. Our Work We rely on the enthusiasm of our team of volunteers, who get involved in our programmes and help us improve invariably. Moreover, the Centre benefits from a number of voluntary British advisers on dealings with British institutions and audiences. These are friends of Romania, private or public persons from various institutions who have supported the Centre in its endeavours by encouraging us to bring new ideas to life. Besides the cultural activities implied by the name, RCC also plays an active part in the social life of the Romanian Diaspora in Britain. Our History The idea of establishing an organisation to represent Romanians in the UK dates from the '50s, when ACARDA (Asociatia Culturala a Romanilor din Anglia - The Cultural Association of the Romanians in England) was founded by Ion Ratiu and Horia Georgescu working together with various individuals, notably the ladies of the Romanian community. In 1984 the UMRL (Uniunea Mondiala a Romanilor Liberi - The World Union of Free Romanians) was launched in Geneva to unite Romanians from all over the world. Ion Ratiu was elected the first President. From that date (1984) UMRL published a monthly newspaper in Romanian and English, 'Romanul Liber' (Free Romanian), which flourished until 1997. In 1984 a British branch of UMRL was founded, along with branches in 23 other countries. Sandu Pobereznic was elected as the first British President, and succeeded by Nicolae Ratiu in 1992. The newspaper was closed and political activity sharply scaled down after the election of 1996, when it was considered that the objective of UMRL, the restoration of freedom and democracy to Romania, had largely been achieved.

My name is Carmela, I am Italian and I hold a full English teaching qualification in Post Compulsory Education and Training (Cert.Ed.)and a Qualified Teaching and Learning Status (QTLS).I also have a BA degree in Post Compulsory Education and Training from Warwick University. I have been teaching Italian for over ten years privately and for colleges. I have taught Italian at the Brasshouse language centre in Birmingham, at North Warwickshire & Hinckley College and South Staffordshire College as well as delivering training for companies such as EXD Ltd. in Coventry, Arlani in Burton, Redrock in Birmingham and for private groups, reaching areas in the West Midlands, from Birmingham to Coventry, Warwick to Lichfield and Solihull. ITALIAN LANGUAGE CULTURE AND COOKING WORKSHOPS- ABOUT ME I grew up in a small village in a traditional Neapolitan family where we prepared local and classical Italian dishes, growing and preserving most of the food we ate. Preparing pasta or gnocchi for our Sunday lunch was a family get together event! We all helped and learned how to make things in a traditional way. During the major festivities such as Christmas and Easter the food preparation took weeks and families and friends exchanged their creations: Struffoli, Panettone and Pandoro at Christmas; Pastiera, Tortano or Casatiello at Easter; for Carnival we made Chiacchiere, and for father’s days Zeppole. There were times when we all went to zia’s house to cook pizza and bread in her stone oven… every occasion was special and gave us an excuse to prepare a traditional dish. Therefore, my love for the food and food preparation grew thanks to the area I was born and my family’s customs. When later I travelled as a student, I exchanged recipes with other people and grandmas from Sicily, Puglia and Tuscany. Therefore, the Italian cooking workshop is an opportunity for me to share with you, in my kitchen, what I have learned, and recreate together an authentic Italian experience.

It helps to have the last name "Pure" - it goes with so many nouns - and as a teacher, it made perfect sense to put "learning" after my name. Pure Learning started when my triplet children were four years old. As a reading specialist, who had experience in the classroom and in the private learning center arena, starting a small tutoring business seemed like the logical next step. I could set my own hours, focus on working 1:1 with students who had dyslexia and other learning issues, homeschool my own children, AND I could develop materials along the way - something I always enjoyed doing as a teacher. When I began working as a reading specialist at a Montessori school, I started implementing spelling lessons I had developed. Orton-Gillingham-based lessons with explicit skills instruction involving letters and sounds AND the use of three modalities - visual, auditory, and kinesthetic - were the most effective. Some of my students were strong in one area but weak in another. By presenting all three modalities in a lesson, each student could find their own strength and I could see how my student learned best. The teachers saw the difference the lessons I had created were making in their students' spelling and writing and craved a program that would teach them how to teach spelling AND make sense to the students. From that, Working with Words evolved. Fast forward 20+ years and, today, I can look back and know that this Orton-Gillingham-based, multisensory approach focused on phonics and the six syllable types has been successful with early, struggling, resistant, underconfident, AND strong readers and spellers. Teachers who have used Working with Words better understand the generalizations and rules that exist in spelling English words and how to teach them. My passion for sewing started at an early age when making matching outfits for mother and daughter was the done thing! The sewing machine we used was temperamental but despite this I was hooked! On visits to my grandparents I would also watch my granny hand sewing little bags with zips or altering her clothes. The possibilities of this new hobby seemed endless. You could also save a fortune and I was so pleased with my creations… What I loved about sewing and still do, is being able to make something that is exactly what I want and it is well-finished enough so it looks as though I have bought it. It certainly doesn’t have to be expensive either, in fact the thriftier the better! Over the years I have been on various courses and workshops to learn more about sewing (and in particular more recently about soft furnishings) and I even got myself a job for a year in the Fabric Department at Liberty in London which was really rather special! I eventually became a teacher myself (English as a Foreign Language) which I loved; I now know how I would want to be taught and how not to teach! For the past six years or so I have been making soft furnishings in the room at the bottom of the garden, firstly for family, then friends and then others, all with the ultimate aim of setting up sewing workshops. And so my dream job is now a reality: all my experience has come together so I can teach people my passion for fabrics, colour, sewing and soft furnishings. The satisfaction I get and can give my students is immense; now I am giving people the skills and the confidence to make beautiful cushions for their home or for their friends; teaching them how to calculate and cut for beautifully hand-finished curtains and blinds… and all in the fabric they love!
