To celebrate GAK's 30th anniversary and our fresh look, we're going to delve into our history and how we grew into one of the top music retailers in the UK. It's been a long journey from very humble beginnings to getting to where we are today. And it all started with one man and a market stall. 1995 BRITPOP EXPLOSION Britpop bands like Oasis, Blur, Suede and Pulp were all electric guitar-based, markedly increasing the demand for the instrument. As the popularity of the guitar flourished, so did the business. 2000 FRESH EXPANSION The business would begin to flourish and grow at a seriously quick pace. Bigger and bigger premises were needed to keep up with the ever-growing amount of stock that needed shipping to customers. 2010 BRAVE NEW WORLD The Internet was a lot like the Wild West back in its early days. By having the foresight and the initiative to delve into this new frontier of sales, we were able to get ahead of the curve and grow alongside the Internet boom. 2016 TEA TO MD From GAK's early days, Max McKellar was helping drive the business forward as it entered unexplored territory. Today, he's leading the company as our Managing Director - a long way to come from cleaning guitars and making tea! 1994 SETTING THE TONE From the beginning, the store was a down-to-earth and unpretentious place to buy your music gear. Everyone was welcome and they were free to try out whatever they wanted. 1996 BEYOND THE STORE A flat above the store had its kitchen and bathroom converted to a mail-order room and office respectively. To spread the word about GAK's Mail Order service, print ads would be run in popular magazines such as Guitarist and Sound On Sound. 2002 THE INTERNET AGE We were one of the first music retailers in the country to go online and have an e-commerce store. Our customers could buy their dream piece of gear, have it brought straight to their house and receive the same friendly service you'd get into the store. 2014 DESTINATION HUB With help from the eye-catching print ads and the enormous success of the website, word spread about what an exciting place the GAK store is to visit. Richard started playing the electric guitar at age eight after being inspired by a Spanish guitarist on a family holiday in Menorca. Richard was privately taught up until age fifteen and continued his study of music through college and university after he left school. He performed regularly as a child gigging from age nine in social clubs and retirement homes, playing a variety of Shadows/Buddy Holly music. Richard has entered numerous competitions over the years, one of which he came second in at the Fry’s Club Search For A Star Competition. He has also performed at the Lakeside venue where the Darts are televised, winning a Fender guitar presented to him by Bruce Welch of The Shadows. He also played for five years in a successful pub/wedding, functions band called Outbreak. Richard continues to regularly involve himself in performances and has deputised for many local bands including Tundra & Obsidian. Richard also performs regularly with a six piece wedding/function band called Freeze. He is a full time professional musician, making a living from performing, teaching and studio session work. Richard has seven years teaching experience and has performed in thousands of venues all over the South West in the seventeen years he has been playing the guitar. He graduated with a BA Honours Degree in Professional Musicianship from the Bristol Institute Of Modern Music. He has been featured on their website under success stories. Take a read Here. Workers at ABP’s Port of Ipswich are plugging in to an e-bike trial scheme with Suffolk County Council. The council’s Way To Go Suffolk team, which helps people to travel sustainably, has launched a scheme for businesses where employees are encouraged to ditch the car and try out an electric bike free of charge. Employees can choose to trial commuting for a week at a time with some of the bikes, whilst others are used as pool bikes allowing staff to pop out at lunchtime for a break and some exercise. The Port of Ipswich is the first organisation to get involved with the scheme, having taken delivery of eight e-bikes for a trial period of three months. The bikes are supplied by e-bike rental provider Hurrecane. They have a range of around 50 miles and, other than punctures, are covered with a call-out service for any breakdowns and repairs. They are different to conventional bikes as they are powered by a battery to assist the rider, increasing the distance that someone can cycle. The council is initially looking to work with organisations that have at least 50 employees and are based in a large town environment. We’re passionate about keeping the craft of ceramics alive. Studio ceramics is coming under increasing threat with its neglect in the education syllabus at primary and secondary levels, whilst further and higher education courses are quietly dropped or subsumed into other disciplines. Our involvement in the promotion of ceramics within education has grown as the need to protect and nurture the subject has intensified. Potclays Kilns Potclays is a specialist kiln manufacturer and we make a wide variety of high quality electric and gas fired kilns for ceramics and other heat treatment processes. These range in size from around 12 litres (0.4cu.ft) chamber capacity mini-kilns to truck kilns of over 2 cu.metres (70cu.ft) capacity. Many of these are specially built to customers' requirements. I studied B.A Ceramic Design through Anglia Ruskin College, Cambridge, graduating in 1999 to set up my workshop next to Salhouse Broad in Norfolk. My work has always been about attempting to capture the essence of the land - and the patterns imposed on it by Man. Between 1999 and 2007 I made several study trips to Mashiko in Japan to learn from potters such as Hamada Tomo-o, Matsusaki Ken and Kusakabe Masakazu and Euan Craig. The following year I was invited to exhibit in Osaka and then in Tokyo. Through a meeting with Wali Hawes at the Osaka exhibition I was invited to apply for a month long residency in Tokoname with IWCAT. This was an amazing experience and I was delighted to be invited back to Tokoname in 2010 to exhibit. I am delighted to be exhibiting in Tokoname once more in 2023- C19 allowing. In 2005, with a bursary from Creative Arts East to work with local Thatchers and make work inspired by their Craft, I developed a glaze suitable for my electric kiln using the thatching reed that had been discarded. Using the thatch gave my work an originality and a sense of place unobtainable out side of the Broads area. Beginning in 2017, Hoveton Great Broad was drained of silt by an ongoing Conservation project. With kind permission from the owner of the Broad I was able to collect some silt by boat. Now firing with my Fred Olsen design wood kiln, affectionately known as "Fast Freda" I developed a glaze from the silt. This then led to using the glaze with stretched forms and eventually to Soda firing in the wood kiln. Freda however didn't much care for this, so it was sadly a short lived soda romance. I continued to wood fire, with a small Fred Olsen design fast fire kiln until recently. In 2018 I was commissioned by the Dean of Norwich Cathedral to make an enormous piece candle stand, this huge piece is now situated in the Lady Chapel for people to light a small candle for loved ones. It is lovely to have work in a permanent presence in my home city and to continue the tradition of potters having work in Cathedrals. I revisited Japan in 2018, my 10th visit, this time with a fellow artist and the specific purpose of visiting the Temple and Shrine gardens to draw inspiration for forthcoming work and exhibitions. Having not quite seen all we needed to, a return trip was made in early 2020 providing me with superb images and memories. The exhibition ABSTRACT JAPAN finally took place in September 2021 at Mandell's Gallery in Norwich and was a great success.
