Musical Futures is a not-for-profit organisation, which first began in the UK 18 years ago as a Paul Hamlyn Foundation Special Initiative and is dedicated to supporting teachers with teaching music in a way that helps them to engage and enthuse their students. Musical Futures supports primary and secondary schools to transform their music teaching. Musical Futures approaches involve making music learning relevant and engaging, imaginative and authentic for students, whatever their level of experience. We offer training and consultancy predominantly in the UK, but have links with institutions and schools in many other countries around the world. Our work is supported by our team of expert Champion Teachers have tried and tested the approaches in their classrooms. Musical Futures has developed into a national and international network of more than 13,000 teachers and practitioners adapting the approaches in the UK and overseas. 500,000+ young people benefit from Musical Futures every year. Students joining us in Year 7 spend their first year at the Westfield Drive site settling into life at Knutsford Academy. We, like many other teachers, recognise that the pressures of an overloaded curriculum, large class sizes and behaviour problems prevent many students achieving their full potential in school. Whether working towards GCSEs or in Primary education, many students may require support at some point in their education to help reach their potential. However sometimes parents find themselves unable to the give the level or type of support required – perhaps because of working commitments, limited knowledge of successful teaching methods or because of the, inevitable, clashes that can occur when a parents tries to take on the teacher role. As parents ourselves we understand how difficult this can be.

Stockport

John Walthew, who became Mayor of Stockport in the early 1870s, and his wife invited the town’s blind people to tea. The Walthews of Wood Hall, Reddish, had first hand experience of the disability, as their daughter Louisa was blind and deaf. After this first meeting, regular weekly gatherings were arranged, at which volunteers read to and generally helped the blind people. In January 1867, the town’s blind, deaf and residents without speech were invited to a meeting at Stockport Sunday School to draw up detailed plans for support. The meeting was chaired by James Sidebottom JP, appointed to carry out the project. To help finance the work, Mr Sidebottom pledged a donation of £50 per year. There were a number of other subscriptions including £10 per year from Mr Ephraim Hallam. The meeting agreed the main aim was to give people with sensory loss the chance of an education and work experience. The committee set up workshops where clients made goods and a shop was opened on Wellington Road South, Stockport, where they were sold. A schoolroom was also established.
