This site has been called ‘the wilderness’ for a thousand years. It dates back to Saxon times when the Forest of Dean, the ancient woodland between the River Severn and the River Wye, was designated royal hunting forest. Looking from the vantage point of The Wilderness Centre down to the River Severn, you can clearly see the broad curves of the river heading out to the Bristol Channel. Over the course of a day you’ll see the tide ebb and flow - the second highest tidal range in the world - and be able to pick out the villages along the River’s bank that were once thriving Roman ports trading throughout the Mediterranean. The current house is Georgian, built in the early nineteenth century as a family home. In the early twentieth century the site became a children’s hospital, specialising in infectious diseases. In the 1960’s Gloucestershire County Council acquired The Wilderness Centre, turning it into an outdoors education and nature studies centre serving the county’s schools. Dan and Sophie Sturdy bought The Wilderness in 2015 as a key location in their vision for human potential and growth.

I had my first baby at 19 years, I started my midwifery training in 2010, started working as a qualified midwife for the NHS in 2014 and then continued to grow my family. That's over 12 years of either helping women in pregnancy and supporting them giving birth or experiencing it myself. Why? Not enough support and too much judgement I'm a big believer that birth isn't just a means to an end. It's the mark of the end of a pregnancy and the start of being a mother. You will always remember the day you give birth and how it makes you feel. It is your stepping stone into motherhood and can shape your experience of early motherhood and your relationship with your baby. Birth isn't just about one day. Birth matters. Yet, the support out there is lacking. The private antenatal education and hypnobirthing scene is filled to the brim with duff advice and opinions over evidence based advice. You can train to teach pregnant women about birth in just a 3 day course, without even having supported a single woman in labour.

Concern surrounding underachievement of young males was brought into sharp focus in 2007 by the independent REACH report. Sponsored by The Home Office, The Department for Communities and Local Government and The Department for Education and Families, the report explored the costs associated with the problems that can arise from a disadvantaged socio-economic background, in this case specifically for young black males. These costs are associated with over-representation in the Criminal Justice System and reduced gross earnings and taxes associated with educational underachievement. They are estimated at £808 million a year and could amount to £24 billion over the next 50 years if the underlying issues are not addressed. From a working-class background himself, Clive attributes his corporate career success to hard work and maintaining a positive attitude. A key finding of the REACH report was a lack of positive male role models, particularly black male role models, in the media and the lives of young men. Clive knows from experience that the socio-economic gap to success can be bridged – he has held a number of senior level HR positions, is a company director and was awarded an OBE in 2010 for his contributions to the REACH report and the workplace mediation industry. Thus his involvement in the REACH report, together with his own personal experience, has inspired the development of the Bridge Builders Mentoring Scheme.

Our mission is to work with educational institutions to develop educational solutions to support today’s learners. This will be achieved through activities, which include the strategic design and delivery of interactive and engaging programmes of study through to small online skills based learning courses (eg MOOCs), or through active support of and advice about an institutions’ innovation and change agenda. Examples of our specific areas of activity can be found here. Background The journey of today’s learners in the 21st century needs to reflect a world where shifting job roles and new technologies will impact significantly on career development. This is underpinned by current estimates about new millenials: They are estimated to work in some 15 to 20 job roles over their lifetime, The majority expect to work beyond 65 years of age (and 12% until they die), It is estimated that 65% of today’s school children will work in a job that doesn’t yet exist. Having the necessary skills and up to date knowledge and understanding to underpin multiple job roles over a lifetime will require a commitment to lifelong learning. With increasing state pension ages and average life expectancy worldwide this drives the need for educational solutions to support individuals gaining access to the right job roles and career development. Traditional models of higher education are increasingly costly for learners in developed markets and short of supply (and out of reach in terms of price) for learners in emerging economies. Innovative solutions are needed.

The Diocese of Gloucester Academies Trust (DGAT) is a multi-academy trust established by the Diocesan Board of Education (DBE) in 2012. Cheltenham Tutors Ltd was founded at the start of the pandemic with the purpose of providing affordable and accessible tuition to students. With schools closing and all learning being remote, we thought that there was a need to offer additional educational support to schools, families, and children. We also thought that this tuition should be accessible to all. We therefore provided affordable online tuition throughout the pandemic and we worked with local schools and families to deliver hundreds of hours of online tutoring. 9am to 3pm each day, we logged on to support students in their learning and to offer 1-2-1 teaching. We greatly enjoyed working with all the wonderful schools, families, and students and making a difference to the education of many children. Now that life is returning to normal and schools are fully open again, we continue to offer affordable tuition to schools and we are happy to take on private clients as well. We offer our tutoring predominantly face to face. What we do We specialise in meeting students where they are at and moving them forward in their learning. Because we are run by teachers, we know what students need to cover in their curriculum, where they should be academically, and how best to accelerate progress in learning. We also believe that all students are capable of making good progress, and that it is normal to struggle and need extra help. The tutoring we provide is professional, effective, and supportive. It starts with getting to know the student and moves onto boosting academic performance, all in an atmosphere which is personal and supportive.

The inspiring courage of the Dominican Sisters of St Rose Convent in Stroud, led them to found St Rose’s in 1912. As a former primary Head Teacher of three substantive posts and one interim headship, I now enjoy my role in providing independent consultancy support and challenge to leaders at all levels in a wide range of context. I am former School Improvement Partner (SIP) across four Local Authority areas, Ofsted and Diocesan Inspector. I am an accedited and experienced leadership coach and employ a coaching approach to much of my work with the school leaders. I have trained many leaders to become effective coaches and facilitated the implementation of a coaching culture in a number of schools. I continue to facilitate and lead the review of Head Teachers’ performance since its introduction in 2001, across many part of the country. I am tuned into the needs of governors with regard to this and offer training to governors who are new to the process. I have assisted the development of governing bodies in many areas of governance. NICKI BELL Former Head Teacher I first became a Head Teacher in January 1995 and was substantive Head Teacher of three schools and an interim Head Teacher of a fourth. Between my last two headships I worked for four years for a national training company in Cambridge that was, at that time, an affiliated centre for the National College. I was responsible for rolling out a number of a national programmes in the East region, including Leading from the Middle. I retired from headship in 2016. My final school was a three-form entry Infant and Nursery School in Birmingham judged by Ofsted to be an outstanding school. We were federated to our adjoining Junior school which was the lead school in a Teaching School Alliance, (TSA) and I was heavily involved in the CPD element of this. My career has offered lots of opportunities to do exciting things. I was a seconded National College Associate for four years supporting school leadership in the West Midlands. I have been lucky enough to write and deliver leadership training in many different places, the two most distant being in the Middle East and China. I now have two roles. I am Director of Primary Education for a Trust for 40% of my time and the rest of my working life is freelance, frequently working with Alistair. We write and deliver training for leaders, at all levels, in primary schools and develop resources to support head teachers with many of the bureaucratic tasks of headship. Alongside this I do a lot of 1-1 support of schools, acting as an Improvement Partner, supporting HT performance management and providing CPD.

June 2011. We take children from Ledbury Primary School and over twenty other local primary schools in Herefordshire, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire. Introduction from the Headteacher Site and Facilities The school is situated close to the edge of the town with views over the surrounding countryside. Subject departments have well-equipped suites of teaching rooms, all with interactive touch screens and we have seven ICT suites and over three hundred computers so that computer-based facilities are always available. Our sport and leisure complex provides excellent indoor facilities together with a large, floodlit Astroturf pitch. In 2009 we opened our Student Services Centre, the first of its kind to be established in Herefordshire. The Centre sets a new standard for inclusive and supportive secondary education, bringing together all essential pastoral and academic support services under one roof. Sixth Form Our Sixth Form Centre is housed in a purpose-built, separate suite of teaching rooms, an ICT network, study room, common room and offices. We have an open entry policy with courses to suit students of all abilities and aptitudes. Numbers each year average around one hundred and twenty students and this means that class sizes can be kept relatively small. Senior Leadership Team Our Senior Leadership Team includes the Headteacher, the Deputy Headteacher, four Assistant Headteacher and the School Business Manager. Successive OFSTED reports have praised the quality of leadership and management at JMHS. The Staff Staff work well as a team and are very supportive of each other. New staff have an induction programme which is individual and matched to previous experience, skills and prior knowledge. Faculty leaders see their most important role as the support of colleagues and they are committed to helping members of their team to work as effectively as possible. Pastoral Care We have an excellent pastoral care system led by our Assistant Headteacher for Pastoral Care and expertly supported by Year Leaders and a team of form tutors. We firmly believe that each student should have key adults whose support is continuous throughout their school careers. Student Support Assistants offer excellent support to Year Leaders as well as being a contact point for both parents and students alike. All students are also allocated to a House. At the end of each academic year Houses and Year groups compete for trophies awarded for positive behaviour, high attendance, sporting achievement and participation, the learning standards, charity work and House Points. Each week students have assemblies and throughout the year take part in a series of fun and exciting challenges. We find this gives students a strong sense of identity within our school
