Lorraine has been working with adults with dyslexia for eight years; she also has experience of working with children and has supported students at Dyslexia Action. She has been involved in assessing and teaching at the two main FE providers in Leicester as well as at De Montfort University. She has a postgraduate certificate in Dyslexia and Literacy and a Certificate of Competence in Educational Testing (both validated by the University of York). She is a Member of the British Psychological Register of Competence in Psychological Testing. Her Practising Certificate was issued by Patoss.

Reading is complex. It requires our brains to connect letters to sounds, put those sounds in the right order, and pull the words together into sentences and paragraphs we can read and comprehend. People with dyslexia have trouble matching the letters they see on the page with the sounds those letters and combinations of letters make. And when they have trouble with that step, all the other steps are harder. Dyslexic children and adults struggle to read fluently, spell words correctly and learn a second language, among other challenges. But these difficulties have no connection to their overall intelligence. In fact, dyslexia is an unexpected difficulty in reading in an individual who has the intelligence to be a much better reader. While people with dyslexia are slow readers, they often, paradoxically, are very fast and creative thinkers with strong reasoning abilities. Dyslexia is also very common, affecting 20 percent of the population and representing 80– 90 percent of all those with learning disabilities. Scientific research shows differences in brain connectivity between dyslexic and typical reading children, providing a neurological basis for why reading fluently is a struggle for those with dyslexia. Dyslexia can’t be “cured” – it is lifelong. But with the right supports, dyslexic individuals can become highly successful students and adults.

The team that we act as an agent for is made up of past and present teachers who have an abundance of first hand exposure to current academic specifications and syllabuses in their specific area. Most of the tutors are examiners for a variety of exam boards. We believe that pen and paper style learning, with a focus on building on strengths and working on weaknesses, will enhance their knowledge of what is going on in the classroom as well as developing the skills and knowledge required for the end-goal of exams. The Learning Support Centre provides a range of specialist disability support services that are tailored to the individual needs of our clients. Our services include: one to one specialist tuition, coaching, mentoring, notetaking, transcription services, assistive technology training, personal assistants and personal care. Our role is to support our service users in accessing education and the workplace as well as provide general support with day to day living. Clients may include people with physical or sensory disabilities, people with neurological conditions (e.g. dyslexia) and people with mental health issues, who wish to develop and enhance their skills for study and work.
