Thistle Aikikai is a member of the Scottish and Borders Birankai under the technical direction of T.K Chiba Shihan. The Chief Instructor, Michael Flynn Shihan began his study of Aikido in 1982 at San Diego Aikikai under the direction of Shihan TK Chiba. He was named Shihan in June of 2005 and was awarded 7th Dan by Doshu Ueshiba Moriteru on 14 January 2018 during the Kagami Baraki celebration at Hombu Dojo. He was formally awarded his Shihan Certificate in a ceremony at Aikikai Hombu Dojo in Tokyo in November 2006 by the second Doshu, Ueshiba Moriteru. He has also received Iaido Shihan title from Mitsuzuka Sensei. Since arriving in Scotland, Flynn Sensei has established the Thistle Aikikai. He serves as the Chairman and Technical Director of Scottish and Borders Birankai. Thisle Aikikai offers beginner through to advanced classes in Aikido and weapons. All are welcome. Instruction in Iaido , the art of drawing the sword and striking a killing blow, is also offered at Thistle Aikikai. In Iaido, students learn to use the sword not merely as a tool for cutting down one’s enemy, but as a method of allowing the mind and body to become more harmonious with nature. During training, students will learn the forms of the Muso Shinden Ryu Iai as developed by Nakayama Hakudo Sensei, with a goal toward synchronizing their breathing and body motions within the techniques in order to understand and practice the efficient use of the body. The club trains at the Iain Nicolson Recreation Centre, Chryston Road, Chryston, G69 9NA and the UFC Hall, G69 9ND (near Glasgow), Scotland (Phone 01326 631465). See below for a map. Lancaster Aikido Club is a not-for-profit martial arts club which has been teaching martial arts in Lancaster since 1976. We train in a friendly atmosphere, focusing on daily practice of Aikido as a pragmatic and functional martial art for self-defence, while endeavouring never to lose sight of its ultimate aim: the cultivation of human beings capable of sharing a peaceful world. Aikido is just as applicable to our daily lives, in our relationships with our family, communication with friends and work colleagues, and most importantly our relation with ourselves, as it is to a situation requiring self-defence. Training will develop you physically and mentally, but neither great strength nor high levels of fitness are required to begin. Wellbeing is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle, and our goal is to assist in your development; providing encouragement, education, and emotional support throughout the collaborative learning process. Aikido 'toughens the body and polishes the spirit'. Aikido is available to all ages and many lifetime practitioners continue to train into their 70s or 80s. We have senior practitioners training regularly at Lancaster who did not begin training until their 40s. We are affiliated with the Aikikai Hombu Dojo (Japan) and a network of Dojos in Europe (Traditional Aikido Europe) through Lewis Bernaldo de Quiros (6th Dan) who serves as Technical Director and Examiner granting Aikikai dan ranks according to Hombu regulations.

The history of how Chikara came about goes right back to 1977 when the founder Sensei Mark D’Arcy 7th Dan started training at the oval karate club, a club led by the late sensei Doug Phillips 6th Dan. Sensei Phillips taught Shotokan karate on the Wirral from the late 1960’s and was a close personal friend to Kanazawa Sensei, during the following years the oval changed its name to Sen-no-Sen under the expert teachings and guidance of the then president Sensei Ronnie Colwell, teaching and classes were of the highest standard in kumite, kata and kobudo. In 1986 Chikara was born and affiliated with the BKA, it’s first dojo opening in pensby on the Wirral. To date Chikara has four dojo’s across the Wirral, Pensby, Upton, Hoylake and Noctorum with 5 sessions a week available. All Chikara members are fully licensed and insured through the BKA. The BKA are full members of the EKF (English Karate Federation) and the WKF (World Karate Federation). The BKA and Chikara provide training opportunities with top class instructors across many styles to compliment our own training. The Association also provides National Championships every year and access to International events via the BKA squad. Chikara has gone through many changes over the years to bring new opportunities and activities to the students, under the guidance of the two Senior Instructors sensei’s Mark D’Arcy (6th Dan) and the late Dave Young (5th Dan), who have both been involved in Martial Arts and more specifically Shotokan karate for over 30 years. Chikara provides training throughout each week with different instructors at different locations across the Wirral.
