To say I am a fan of Pilates is somewhat of an understatement – It has changed my life quite fundamentally. I discovered Pilates in 2012 and the impact has been profound. I am both physically and mentally stronger, I have more energy, I have more stamina, and yes, I look better. Let me explain each one of those rather dramatic statements. The basic principles of Pilates are breathing, concentration, control, centering, precision and flow. I am stronger physically due to the nature of the exercises – they’re intense. Pilates was originally developed in the early 1900s by Joseph Pilates from a combination of yoga, martial arts, boxing, and weightlifting. It’s not a high impact cardio routine, but controlled, precise movements that challenge the body to promote strength, flexibility, and balance – and it just works. The body becomes stronger, firmer and better aligned to cope with daily life more easily. I feel energised because I have learned how to breathe properly and I have improved my posture significantly – I have asthma – quite a scary condition I find – and understanding the effect of posture has been a massive help and taking control of my breathing has empowered me – I feel in control and less scared as such I am stronger mentally. I find daily activities don’t leave me drained as I have much more energy. I’m 43 and my world revolves around my family; a very active husband, he’s the current Masters National Champion and used to swim for his country; our brilliant daughter Emma, she’s 6 so every day brings something new; our busy busy dog Oscar, a working cocker who nobody told is nearly 11; and this year we added a couple of loppy bunnies to the team. We are more active than the pre-Pilates me would have been able to be – I’m so grateful I discovered it – the lifestyle it affords me is wonderful. I didn’t start Pilates to lose weight (there are faster routes if that’s your ambition) but lose it I have – not a particularly massive amount – I was never a candidate for Britain’s Biggest Loser but it looks like I have lost more than the scales suggest – just because engaging the core muscles brings about an improved posture that looks better. The lower abdominals and hips are where it’s most significant – and the strength that comes with that is clear. Pilates exercises are applicable – and adaptable – to suit pretty much anybody, whether you’re an active individual or not. Vicki is a qualified teacher with over 20 years’ experience in schools, colleges and universities. She worked as a secondary school teacher for a number of years before working with students with additional needs. After several years running programmes for young people and adults in the FE sector, Vicki undertook a Masters in Education, specialising in Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLDs), along with additional training to assess for dyslexia. She is also a qualified SENCO and worked for several years as an Advisory Teacher for the local authority. Vicki currently works part-time in a HE setting assessing and tutoring individuals with specific learning difficulties. Each year she assesses over 80 students for Disabled Students Allowance and continues to offer advice and assessments to a number of local schools. Vicki is the current Chair of the Dorset PATOSS group. Vicki lives in Swanage and relaxes by walking in the Purbeck hills with her dog Poppy, pottering in her tiny garden and acting as roadie to her musical teenage sons. I have dedicated my entire life to helping other people to become high performers. Others say I’m a high performer too! I define a high performer as someone who wants to achieve more than others. Someone who is committed to being a little better tomorrow than they are today. And someone who wants to leave a legacy that makes the world better than they found it. Sometimes that means being tenacious, sometimes being brave and embracing new ways. Often letting go of the old ways that no longer work. Letting go of stress, our self-negativity and inherited dramas. During my 20+ years as a business improvement consultant I’ve created a fusion method that reduces stress and simultaneously improves profit. Let’s face it, as a business owner a lot of stress is from knowing there’s more opportunity, but you can’t quite grasp it. Taking the dual approach of identifying accelerated growth, profit and stress reduction gives maximum results. Although qualified in business psychology, accelerated business growth and business coaching with a focus on creating high-performing businesses, in my heart I know that every business is only as successful as its people. And, that high performing people think differently, act differently and feel different to people who have missed out on internal self-development practice such as meditation. I was fortunate that my father taught me meditation as a child. It was only in my twenties I realised the power of my teachings and daily practice as I struggled juggling studying business psychology, working full time and trying to enjoy life. I realised that meditation helped me sleep, kept me calm and healthy so I started formal training to become both a yoga and meditation teacher which I incorporated into my business optimisation consultancy. My studies have extended over thousands of hours of apprenticing, studying different ways of meditating and studying The Vedas. I followed my fascination of the layers of human consciousness and how business owners can become high performers. I am now over 29 years and 21,170 meditations deep into my practice and my optimisation methods have added over £100 million of revenue to companies. I have studied with Buddhist Monks and Tibetan Masters, British School of Meditation, British School of Yoga. Most recently studying Meditation Mastery Teacher, Advanced Yoga Practitioners Diploma, with the highly acclaimed team at Dru Global School of Meditation, Yoga & Ayurveda. I am qualified at Master level in Ancient Yoga Massage from an accredited teacher of the Healing Hands Centre, Kathmandu. I live with my husband and dog in Cheshire where you can find me walking in nature, enjoying my own cooking a bit too much and riding my motorcycle on sunny days! Turning My Mess to Mastery Against all these odds of mental exhaustion, emotional turmoil and physical pain in 1995 I embarked on my solo, unsupported motorcycle ride around the coast of Great Britain with no satnav, no mobile and no wrong turns. I am the first woman to do it. Just weeks before the start I couldn’t stand straight. I couldn’t walk. It was then I acknowledged something I had known from a very young age that there is a vital link between our mind, nature-connectedness and achieving the success we desire. With this acknowledgement I was able to reduce and eradicate the pain. I was pain free and set off as planned, met all 277 pre-planned media interviews on time every time and raised a substantial amount of money for a lung cancer charity. That was just the beginning of the journey

Miss Scarlett is the owner and manager of Droxford Montessori, establishing the school in 2014. Miss Scarlett has over 15 years of experience in Early Years Education and her passion for Montessori began in 2005 after a work experience placement Certified with a full Montessori International Teaching Diploma and Early Years Teacher Status, Miss Scarlett is the school's special educational needs coordinator and leads all staff practice in safeguarding. Miss Scarlett is currently on maternity leave. Miss Helen Miss Helen is our Montessori School Manager and having lived in France for some years loves to share her love of France with the children. “I have worked in childcare and education for over 20 years qualifying in NVQ level 2 and 3, Montessori international diploma and a range of training including Senco. I have had varied roles including working in schools managing a baby room and caring for children with autism, physical disabilities and palliative care. I started working at Montessori in 2006 and fell in love with the ethos as well as my Montessori family. Every day is a learning experience not only for our children but me too.” Miss Lucie Miss Lucie is our Deputy Manager and vholds her Early Years Teacher Status achieved at Portsmouth University. She has previously run Ofsted rated ‘Outstanding’ early years setting’s and has worked at Droxford since 2015. Miss Lucie is a mummy of two little ones, both of whom have attended Droxford Montessori. Having previously trained in Food Hygiene Miss Lucie carries out our weekly cookery lessons using products from our allotment when possible as well as introducing a mindful approach to healthy happy eating. Miss Lucie is fabulous at being creative and loves gardening and spending time on the allotment with the children.. Miss Zoe Miss Zoe is an excellent dancer and loves throwing some moves with the children. “My daughter joined Miss Scarlett’s school in 2015 and totally embraced the Montessori ethos thoroughly enjoying her time in the setting. I thought the principle involved, in particular the child led activities, learning through play and nature were very beneficial. I have now taken this forward into my current NVQ training.” Miss Lorraine Miss Lorraine is our Resources Manager and has worked as a Montessori teacher for over 15 years. “I did my training alongside Miss Helen and we have worked together ever since. I too fell in love with the ethos and have enjoyed many years working alongside and learning from the most amazing and talented children. I was part of the team originally that helped set up and open Droxford school with Miss Scarlett and it has been lovely to watch it grow into the outstanding setting it has become. I decided to step back from full time teaching two years ago and now work in the role of resources management (basically making the classroom look beautiful and a fun learning environment). Outside of school I am Married with one son, I am a qualified French Cuisine Chef and my hobbies include: fitness and mud runs. I have a cockapoo called Zeus and 5 tortoises.” Miss Clio She is a mummy to one little boy called Bertie and a fluffy dog called Humphrey. Miss Clio is always smiling, she also holds her NVQ Level 3 and is currently working towards her Montessori Diploma. Miss Clio has excellent arty skills and the children love working with her. Miss Sophie Originally came to work at our Holiday Clubs. Falling in love with the ethos she decided to join us during term time whilst deferring university for a couple of years. Miss Sophie brings much enthusiasm to the classroom and is very much loved by all the children.

I am a strong advocate for natural pregnancy, childbirth and parenting but I would never push my own views on anyone, I support women in all their various choices. I am a qualified Breastfeeding Peer Supporter and am always happy to assist with any questions regarding any aspect of pregnancy, birthing, breastfeeding and so on. I had all three of my children at home in our own little birthing pool using homeopathy and Hypnobirthing to support me. I am very pro women’s choice for all aspects – Your body, your baby, your choices! Tenacious. Terrific. Trustworthy. Truthful. And sometimes Trouble. When you ask my family, friends and coworkers about me, they will probably list these attributes. Or qualities. For good and for bad. I am the only child to my mother Grace and my father Ken who met in Blackpool, England during the Second World War, which means much of my family resides in England. Including my daughter who met my son-in-law during her junior year abroad at Oxford University. I grew up not knowing that my mother had an accent, never understanding the difference between English and American terminology so that even today I will say a word and people will look perplexed, and I realize I am using the English word and not the American one. I’m an only child because my parents decided traveling back to England would be very difficult with more children. My father made a point to keep me from being spoiled which was a double-edged sword because his lack of praise left me with a feeling that I had to try twice as hard as anyone else just to keep up. The end result is one very motivated woman, and I constantly seek continued learning and new challenges. My first words were undoubtedly “When are you going to give me a horse?” and thus Patience Prize and I became a team when I was 14. My father once again made sure I knew the horse was not to be taken for granted when he said, “Now you’ve got a horse, you’d better get a job. And you won’t be paid for mowing the lawn anymore.” My love of animals produced my first job at the local veterinarians cleaning up cages and feeding animals. One small dog had broken her two front legs, was terribly vicious, and no one could touch her. After her surgery she was crammed up in a corner while still asleep, and I moved her into a more comfortable position and, of course, petted her and spoke to her. After that I was the only one who could open her cage and touch her without getting bitten. She must have known my smell. Years passed and I became both a photojournalist and regular journalist with local Berkshire County Massachusetts newspapers. When I returned to college to complete my bachelor’s degree, my journalism provided me with life experience credits and thus I completed my BA in English. What to do next? I had student loans, so I needed either grad school or a second job. My daughter waitressed at a local restaurant open only on weekends and they said they needed a dishwasher, so she said, “My brother needs a job.” Then they asked, “So who else do you have at home?” and she said, “My mom.” Thus, I tried the second job routine as a waitress. We served wine in long-stemmed glasses and carried them on a tray. During one shift I was at a table of two women and the tray started to tilt, and I couldn’t stop it! So, I stood there and watched the wine glasses crash down on the table and splash everywhere. It was not a happy time for all involved. So, I said, “That’s it, I’m going to grad school.” I took my daughter and son to see Phantom of the Opera on Broadway, we ate at the Russian Tea Room, and I told them they couldn’t bug me for two years. The non-traditional program at Vermont College of Norwich University was a full-time program so I had a full-time job, a full-time grad school program, a son in high school and a daughter in college. During my internship I worked 7:00 a.m. to noon, drove to Albany, New York (a one-hour drive one way), worked at a public relations firm from 1:00 to 6:00 and stopped at the restaurant where my two offspring worked about 7:00 for a glass of wine and a light dinner. Then I realized I didn’t have time to clean the bathroom, so I hired a cleaning lady (very inexpensive in a small town back then) and decided that was an expense associated with grad school. That was a valuable decision. The downside of a small town is that a master’s degree doesn’t allow for many jobs at a living wage. I decided I would move. After networking for several years and finding a church in Washington, DC I moved to northern Virginia on October 2, 1999, never having lived more than 6 miles from where I was born. I got a job the second day. I bought a house that January and a horse, Sonny Madison, in January 2001 and have never regretted my choice or looked back. At some point in 2018 I found Her Nexx Chapter and started writing for them. It provides me with a chance to get in touch with my creative style since my most prevalent job has been a technical writer. Now I’m also the Editorial Project Director and a member of the Advisory Board. It’s a tremendous value to women everywhere, and I always enjoying learning something new and sharing my blogs with the community. So here I am. I’m still horseback riding and trying to keep fit. I try to look for the positive side of life even in times of turmoil – notice I said “try” because sometimes life gets to be a tad difficult. But that’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

1-2-1 Dog Training

Focusing on you and your dog outside of a group class setting, in a 1-2-1 dog training session, can be really useful for you and your dog. We can focus on specific goals you may have, from teaching a dog a new game such as retrievals or flirt pole, to training for specific situation such good dog manners when guests come to our house. We can also develop a training plan to help address existing undesirable behaviours your experiencing such as your dog pulling on lead, your dog not performing recall, dog to dog reactivity, dog to person reactivity or even your dog chasing birds or squirrels.   1-2-1 dog training sessions are typically 1 hour or 1.5 hours long, depending on the issue, or number of things you want to look at in a single session. Training can be carried out in your home/ garden or out at an agreed location, such as a local park, if suitable for you and your dog's particular issue. I am also happy for you to travel to me to train your dog at an agreed location. 1-2-1 dog training prices: 1 hour = £60, including follow up report. 1.5 hours= £90, including follow up report. (Longer sessions can be arranged by agreement, priced on an individual basis.) Above prices are based on Dog Training being in and around Bishop's Stortford (IE Sawbridgeworth, Much Hadham, Little Hallingbury, Harlow, Puckeridge, Standon, Manudon), I am happy to travel, subject to agreed travel costs.

Group Puppy and Dog Training Classes

Puppy training classes and dog training classes are suitable for general dog training and relationship building. Classes are run in line with the IMDT (Institute of Modern Dog Traioners) code of ethics, and training techniques are based upon positive reinforcement, using dog treats or dog toys and play as rewards for completing the actions we ask the puppy or dog to complete.    Classes will be limited to 6 people, to ensure I can circulate and provide individual feedback relevant to your puppy or dog training. We will teach foundation behaviours, with the benefit of being in a dog training class environment, which relies on your dog working around the distraction of other dogs. Classes will also teach you to effectively communicate with your dog and give you the skills to practice outside of classes and implement the training in your every day life, in a rage of environments. Puppy training classes and Dog training classes last 1 hour. They are run on Friday mornings in Bishop's Stortford.
