The Museum of English Rural Life is owned and managed by the University of Reading. We use our diverse and surprising collection to explore how the skills and experiences of farmers and craftspeople, past and present, can help shape our lives now and into the future. We work alongside rural people, local communities and specialist researchers to create displays and activities that engage with important debates about the future of food and the ongoing relevance of the countryside to all our lives. We were established by academics in the Department of Agriculture in 1951 to capture and record the rapidly changing countryside following World War II. The Museum is based on Redlands Road in a building originally designed by Sir Alfred Waterhouse in 1880 for local businessman Alfred Palmer, of the Huntley & Palmer biscuit company. The house then became St Andrews Hall of Residence in 1911, and in 2005 a modern extension was built onto the house for the Museum. The Museum was awarded £1.8million from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) in 2014 for the redevelopment of the galleries, reopening in October 2016. The redevelopment strengthens and renews our links with agriculture as well as enhancing our position in supporting engagement opportunities for students and academics across a wide variety of disciplines, nationally and internationally. The MERL and Reading Museum are currently in a strategic partnership as part of the Arts Council England National Portfolio 2018-2022. As Museums Partnership Reading we work together to provide cultural opportunities for Reading’s young people and diverse communities, through schools, volunteering, digital engagement and exhibitions. TEG helps mainly Turkish and Kurdish speaking adults and children overcome barriers to Education, Employment, Health, British Citizenship and any other problems they face. Our aims: To assist individuals and their families in advancing their education, realising their potential and improving their quality of life. To target members of the community who are faced with greater levels of inequality and discrimination - the unemployed, the unqualified and under-qualified, the disabled, refugees and women. To contribute to the multicultural society in the UK by ensuring that Turkish-speaking people are empowered to contribute their skills, talents and experience and play a full role in the community. This is of benefit to our members and society as a whole. TEG provides three main services Education Qualified and experienced teachers running a range of courses and training programmes. Computer for Adults Two levels with examinations and national qualifications (CLAIT OCR) Turkish Literacy for Women Turkish Reading and Writing classes for women. Turkish, Maths and Science for Children Weekend classes and Homework Clubs for children from 7 until 14 years of age. GCSE Maths & Science classes for children and adults of all ages. Turkish Language Courses Weekly classes for English speakers wishing to learn Turkish from complete beginners to intermediate level. TEG Information Advice and Guidence A bilingual user/client centre with impartial advice, information and support. General Support Call or drop for general support. Staff will either help you on the spot, make an appointment, or refer you to another appropriate service. Employment & Educational Advice Make an appointment for specific IAG including Comparability Statement from NARIC. Legal Advice Make an appointment for legal advice including Ankara Agreements, Work Permits, Home Office Issues, Benefits and Housing including buying your home. As an eternal optimist, she is focused on increasing the number of people worldwide who understand the powerful impact of their food choices. She has been an active advocate of a wholefood plant-based diet and vegan life for decades. A high profiled and dedicated health counsellor and teacher with over 40 years’ experience in the wellness industry. She has designed and presented corporate and personal programs covering most aspects of nutrition and wellbeing. She is a graduate of T. Colin Campbell Centre for Nutrition Studies and an expert in her field on plant-based nutrition. Aside from nutritional science her approach draws from the fields of Macrobiotic Nutrition, ecological sustainability, and her studies in Traditional Chinese Medicine. She is the author of Macrobiotics for all Seasons and her most recent book Go Vegan, with a forward by T Colin Campbell. Marlene has worked with clients in the UK, U.S.A., Europe and Australia designing bespoke nutritional programs and training private chefs in plant-based nutrition. Her clients have included business leaders and royalty. Marlene and her husband Bill Tara teach on-line training programs and have graduates of their Macrobiotic Vegan Health Coach Programme in 27 countries. In 2003 Bill and Marlene first outlined their vision to create the Human Ecology Project to serve their shared vision of a healthy world for humans and non-humans alike. The charity was born in 2021 and will produce educational videos and material for schools, colleges, and universities as well as the general public.
