This begins with the success of the amazing team at Spring Common Academy and encouragement from others within our community to increase our system leadership role and spread the reach of high quality special education provision and training. In 2014 Spring Common School developed as a Teaching School status with a National Leader in Education and in 2015 designated a national support school status. In January 2016 Spring Common School became Spring Common Academy and successfully became a Multi Academy Trust called Spring Common Academy Trust with intent to grow as a successful organisation. In June 2016 Spring Common Academy trust was selected from a national field to develop the special school project at the new Community in Cambridgeshire at Alconbury Weald. This project called Alconbury Weald education campus moved to milestone 3 which is detailed design in partnership with Cambridgeshire Local Authority, Atkins global and Morgan Sindall Construction in April 2021. It is the intention of our trustees that this new special school be named as Prestley Wood Academy. This new special school will be mixed age 3 to 19 for 150 pupils. In November 2018 Spring Common Academy was judged outstanding overall Ofsted report date 18 December 2018, building on the hard work of the staff team and trustees. During 2020 – 2021 a significant Capital build project was undertaken to improve hygiene and disability access to the building in partnership with Cambridgeshire Local Authority, Oxbury chartered surveyors and Jeakins Weir. Following a period of transition from September 2020 in January 2021 Dr Kim Taylor OBE became the full time Executive Head/ CEO for the development of the Trust and Julia McIntosh appointed as Head of School at Spring Common Academy by trustees. In April 2021 the members and trustees agree to change the name of the Trust to Horizons Education Trust with the prospect of more special schools joining the trust. In May 2021 the former TBAP Unity Academy transferred into the trust as Riverside Meadows Academy with two sites at St Neots and Wisbech as an SEMH special school. This school was judged good and report date was 3 July 2019. Between May to June 2021 emergency works identified prior to academy transfer completed on the Algores Way site at Wisbech to support the safety of staff and pupils. Significant ICT infrastructure installed on both sites to enable staff and pupils to access wireless using Eastnet supported by ICT Services with new email domains. In May 2021 The Fenland Education Campus which includes a new SEMH special school for Wisbech moved to Milestone 3 of detailed design with Cambridgeshire Local Authority Atkins Global and Kier. The site identified in Wisbech will be for 60 placement SEMH special school.

Sounds Together is a complete, systematic, synthetic phonics programme for use in Reception and KS1. The Programme is the 'step-up' from 'Letters and Sounds'. It provides a fresh, thorough and systematic approach to teaching and learning phonics that builds on previous professional experience and understanding, without requiring teachers to 'unlearn' the positive principles and methods of 'Letters and Sounds'. Sounds Together has its roots in 'Letters and Sounds', but has been extensively developed and creatively elaborated in the light of all the feedback and learning from the thousands of schools that used 'Letters and Sounds' in the national 'Communication, Language and Literacy Development Programme' (CLLD). Sounds Together is the only fully DFE approved phonics programme to draw on this knowledge base. It's easy to use because the planning fully describes each step of the teaching sequence for each day's phonics session. It's engaging for children because the teaching resources for each session include vivid interactive whiteboard materials that will capture children's attention and keep it focused on what they need to learn. It minimises the amount of time needed to prepare for each phonics session, because all the IWB materials needed are immediately ready for use for every single daily phonics session. The Programme includes an electronic library of decodable captions, sentences and other short texts that can be printed out as handy-sized reading cards. The Programme includes the materials children need to practise and apply their phonic knowledge and skills. There is also a wealth of extra IWB resources that can be used for additional practice, including materials for individual or group work. All the Sounds Together materials can be used with a complete class or smaller groups. What we are about Owned and ran by Craig and Sophie Williams, parents to their son Avery and Ivy-Isabella, Woodland Play Patch was designed to offer a welcoming and calming play space to all parents, carers, babies and toddlers within County Durham and across the North East of England. After giving birth to Avery, Sophie felt limited with places that she could take Avery to, that had a focus specifically on babies and younger toddlers. Most places that were available were targeted towards older toddlers with a small baby pen and were so large and busy that often anxiety of taking Avery out meant that she often stayed at home. After attending a local toddlers group in Durham, where she met like minded mums, Sophie realised the importance of building a strong mum friendship circle and over the years from Avery being born to opening Woodland Play Patch, has created some strong mum friendships that she knows she has for life. After being "that mum" herself, Sophie and Craig wanted to create a space where mothers, fathers and carers can come with new born babies and toddlers, without the chaos of soft play. Somewhere intimate, where over time, customers will always see a familiar face and to encourage mums to sit together, talk and socialise. Somewhere, that allows the children to grow and develop where they can come as babies and enjoy until they start school. Five years on, Sophie is now lucky enough to benefit from Woodland Play Patch herself. After giving birth to their second child, daughter Ivy during the Pandemic, Sophie now has a strong community of mams, who she has met from Woodlands New Mam Socials. Although Woodland Play Patch was interrupted during the pandemic, we have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know our customers over the last three years and seeing how the little ones use their imaginations with our toys. A video game based on the work of University of Aberdeen historians has been nominated for the 2022 BAFTA Scotland Awards, the biggest celebration of Scottish film, games and television talent. Strange Sickness, led by Dr Jackson Armstrong and Dr William Hepburn, is a digital narrative game which brings people face-to-face with life in Scotland during the Middle Ages. It is based on and inspired by the events, descriptions and people recorded in Aberdeen’s UNESCO-recognised Burgh Records, which University historians have spent the past decade painstakingly transcribing. The records contain unique details about how the town of Aberdeen dealt with the threat of the plague and the researchers used this as the basis for the game of interactive fiction. It is one of three nominations in the ‘Games’ category of the 2022 BAFTA Scotland Awards and will compete for the award against Hercule Poirot: The First Cases and The Longest Walk. BAFTA – the British Academy of Film and Television Arts - is a world-leading independent arts charity that brings the very best work in film, games and television to public attention and supports the growth of creative talent in the UK and internationally. Through its Awards ceremonies and year-round programme of learning events and initiatives, BAFTA identifies and celebrates excellence, discovers, inspires and nurtures new talent, and enables learning and creative collaboration. Strange Sickness was funded by a Kickstarter campaign which attracted global backing, and development of the game was headed by Dr Hepburn, who created the concept for the game and wrote the story. The game’s mechanics were designed by game developer Katharine Neil while the game’s visuals were created by artist Alana Bell. Dr Jackson Armstrong led the Burgh records research on which the game is based and was also directly involved in the making of the game. He said they were ‘surprised and thrilled’ to learn that Strange Sickness had been nominated. “The BAFTA Scotland Awards celebrate and reward the highest achievements in Scottish film, television and games talent and we are beyond delighted to see Strange Sickness shortlisted alongside such prestigious talent. “Games are an amazing tool to help people imagine the past and the Burgh Records are an outstanding resource to help us understand life in the Middle Ages. To see a game using historical records recognised in this way is a real boost for our collaborative research efforts with the Aberdeen City & Aberdeenshire Archives.” Dr Hepburn added: “The game allows players to immerse themselves in Aberdeen’s history, interact with characters from medieval society and make decisions which will shape their own story. “Katharine Neil and Alana Bell did an amazing job of bringing our research and ideas to life and the feedback we have received from players has been fantastic.”
