Kate feels extremely privileged to have worked with her hands for much of her adult life making sculpture and working stone. It has suited her practical and creative nature and has offered her the opportunity to design and make sculpture of every scale for both public spaces and private homes. She particularly enjoys site specific projects and draws inspiration from the people and environment connected to the place where sculpture will be placed. Kate says “you have to look sideways at a subject, see it with fresh eyes to bring originality and life into a sculpture, I try to create a dialogue between myself as the artist, the material and the place.” Kate has taken this idea further by creating Elysium Memorials where she collaborates with other artists to design and make artworks as unique memorials for the home and garden as an alternative to a headstone. Each one is a reflection of a life in the form of an artwork that can be kept and handed down through a family. The teaching of stone carving and sculpture brings her great pleasure too, helping people to develop their skills and watching the pleasure they gain from working stone. Kate says “I try to adjust my teaching to the student’s needs, it’s incredible what beginners can achieve if guided well. The Forest of Avon is one of England's Community Forests which were established many years ago with the aim of connecting people with trees locally. The Forest of Avon is not a single 'forest' but the combination of the many trees and woodlands across the West of England, formerly Avon - the four counties of Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. So far, well over a million trees have been planted in the Forest of Avon and many woodlands and access networks have been improved and maintained. You may see 'Forest of Avon' signs on your local walks showing where we have supported landowners to improve or plant new woodland and where they support public access for our lovely walks. As part of a network of community forests we can source funding such as through our current Trees for Climate project, Defra funded through England's Community Forests. We want to enable as many people as possible to access and enjoy the benefits of our trees and community woodlands.

I have had a love of plants and flowers from an early age, and I used to earn my pocket money as a child weeding my gran's garden. She was a very knowledgeable ‘plants woman’ and I absorbed so much from spending time with her. My mum also loved flowers, and it was her ambition to fill every room of her house with them all year round; she never quite managed it! Building on their passion, I decided to take up the gauntlet, and started to grow seasonal flowers from seed. I became addicted, and was soon making bouquets for friends and selling flowers and plants at my garden gate. It was here that I met my first bride-to-be who was buying one of my posies. We started chatting and she casually asked me if I would do her wedding flowers. She liked the fresh, scented, pretty flowers that were not available on the high street. My cottage garden flowers lent themselves so beautifully to a natural, free-flowing design… I immediately said yes, and have never looked back.
