Both courses are designed for students with some previous experience in stained glass or have already either completed a beginners course or attended a workshop. The course will focus on developing ideas and extending technical and artistic skills in design and stained glass execution. Students will be encouraged to experiment and learn how different colours and glass types work together and how to enhance your designs. Tools are included in the cost but materials will be an extra charge for materials. Whether you are a complete novice or would like to practice your skills, you will be guided through the steps and skills needed to create a simple stained glass panel using traditional leading techniques. You will be encouraged to experiment and learn how different colours and glass types work together. You will produce a final leaded panel approximately 25cm x 25cm using coloured glass. The course will cover basic panel design, creating cutting template, selecting and cutting from a beautiful range of coloured glass, leading, soldering cementing and finishing techniques. One-Day Workshops An Introduction To The Colourful World Of Traditional Stained Glass One Day Workshop 9.30am – 5pm | Saturday 24th September | £145 This one-day taster course allows you to experience making a piece of traditional stained glass as a 20cm square panel to take home. This is a practical course, you will learn the basic construction process: cutting glass, putting a panel together with a lead, soldering, cementing and finishing. A choice of simple abstract designs will be available, as well as all the materials needed to create your stained glass piece.

The Engineering Biology Interdisciplinary Research Centre provides a hub for anyone interested in Engineering Biology at the University of Cambridge, including researchers, commercial partners and external collaborators. Engineering Biology is an emerging field which applies engineering principles to the design and modification of living systems. The University of Cambridge has been an important and early contributor in this area. The Engineering Biology Interdisciplinary Research Centre was established in 2013 with the support of the Schools of Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences and Technology to bring together related activities across the university and within the community. Academic leadership of the IRC is provided by the Steering Committee, and supported by the IRC Coordinator who works with researchers and external partners to implement IRC activities. The major aims of the IRC are to: Provide a hub of interdisciplinary exchange for all those interested in Synthetic and Engineering Biology at the University of Cambridge, from researchers and students to industrial partners and policy makers. Glass blowing courses: Learn to blow glass at Clavering Glassworks, Essex 1 DAY BEGINNER COURSE This one day lesson lasts for six hours and aims to provide an intensive introduction to this most exciting and challenging of craft disciplines. Throughout the lesson, you will learn to gather molten glass from the furnace at a temperature exceeding 1100 degrees and manipulate it with a range of traditional glassmaking tools. You will be taught to apply colour and pattern to the clear glass so that by the end of the lesson, you will have produced a number of items from vessels to paper weights of your own design to take home and treasure. KEY INFORMATION: This glassblowing lesson is aimed at complete beginners, so no previous experience is necessary. Small class sizes - maximum of three students to one instructor so you will get plenty of one-on one instruction. All safety equipment and materials are provided. Please wear sensible, comfortable clothes, preferably layers, so you can remove the outer layer if you get hot; and flat, sturdy shoes. Long hair should be tied back. Complimentary hot and cold drinks will be provided but feel free to bring along drinks, snacks and a packed lunch. Lunch is available at the Lodge nearby. Students for glassblowing courses must be over 18 years of age. Please note that glass vessels and other pieces made during the lesson need to cool slowly in the kiln, so these can be picked up two days later, or alternatively these can be posted for a charge.
