High Grange School’s multi-disciplinary approach incorporates best practices and autism-friendly strategies and supports in order to meet the educational needs of students who have ASD. Our students learn how to develop and use effective compensatory strategies to overcome difficulties in social and emotional processing, communication and flexibility in thinking and behaviour, all of which can combine to have a negative impact on their learning. The design of the school; its environment and facilities; and the structure and delivery of our educational programmes are created to reduce the stress and anxieties often associated with an autism spectrum condition. Our enabling teaching approach provides multiple physical and practical opportunities as well as visual supports for learning. This helps students to achieve their full potential by understanding and dealing with personal challenges while making the most of their abilities and strengths. Managing expectations realistically is a core part of our educational programme. Individualised Learning Plans are created for all students with input from the school’s specialist therapists. These plans include strategies to enable students to manage their anxieties; to regulate their emotional responses; and to reduce or eliminate negative and inappropriate behaviours which are preventing effective learning and positive social interactions. During the school day students have access to a varied and stimulating curriculum. The Classes are grouped by Key Stage and students are taught in small groups of up to 6. Teachers use detailed planning to ensure each individual is enabled to achieve in all areas. Classrooms are well-equipped and include specialist facilities for Music, Art & Design, D&T, Science, Computer Science and ICT, Food Technology and Performing Arts. High Grange has excellent PE facilities, including a swimming pool, large gymnasium, hard court areas and extensive grassed areas.

In 2009 Bristol Parent Carers was formed as an independent, parent-led organisation, providing the new way forward. We aim to reach out to more parent carers, involve them in a variety of different exciting ways, build on past good work and continue to provide a voice for all. We are a group of parents and carers of children with disabilities and special needs who live in Bristol. For 20 years parent carers and parent support agencies in Bristol have worked in partnership with the local authorities to shape service provision for children and young people with disabilities and special needs. These initiatives have been successful in bringing about positive changes for parent carers and their children.

From a small but beautifully formed space in North Street, Pizza Workshop was born in 2015. It was the result of a long-term love affair with making pizza in our hand-built pizza oven at home for many years. Today, we have two thriving community restaurants in Bristol, each with its own loyal following. Our spaces are modern and fresh, just like the food we serve. The design of our spaces was inspired by the pizza that would be served: simple, premium ingredients with great presentation. And the craftsmanship is telling: bespoke fittings, vibrant colours and top-quality materials that reflect the pizza being served – simple and premium. We have a wonderfully diverse team of chefs and front of house staff from across Europe, many of whom have worked for us for since day one. Their dedication and loyalty have made Pizza Workshop the successful business that it is today.

I am a freelance designer-maker, applied artist, crafts-woman, whatever you want to call me – I stitch stuff by hand; fabric, metal, porcelain, leather, vitreous enamel.. . My work is various, it depends whether I am working for myself, to commission or collaborating with other artists. But whatever I do is slow to make; detailed hand stitching in any material whether in silk, linen, wool or wire takes time, consequently my work is also slow to evolve. I decided to show on this site what I do, who I am work with, how I work and also how I think. I want to show the work behind HER WORK not just the finished things. The journey from the first idea, searching, researching, drawing, sampling and eventually making the finished piece. You will be able to watch my work progress, or not; maybe by seeing this record people will come to value making that is manufactured by hand, heart and eye. In May 2010 I developed – Heart Space Studios ( from my yoga practice “Put your Hands in your Heart Space”) and for 5 years it was a space in Bristol England for all things textile. The activities at the studios can still be viewed – I closed the studio workshops in 2015 – the classes remain on this site as part of the blog, they contain many of my most popular posts….. Heart Space Studios continues as a group of makers who develop projects primarily for publishing companies. Most notably we work with designer Kaffe Fassett in the production of his patchwork quilt books and other fabrics.

Karl Seymour Founder Karl is one of the founders of Photosymbols with a background in graphic design and photography. He developed an interest in accessible information and communication while working as a carer, and later as an accessible information designer for the NHS in Bristol. Pete Le Grys Founder Pete is the other founder whose specialisms are co-production, involvement and training. Pete has a wealth of experience in the health and social care sector and also worked for the NHS in Bristol where the pioneering work we do first began. Dean Milner-Bell Creative Director New to the team for 2022 is Dean Milner-Bell, who comes to us with many years of experience building the ‘Easy on the I’ symbol set based in Leeds, Yorkshire. We are really excited about what Dean is bringing to the mix as he takes over responsibility for creating new pictures and easy-read templates. Sharon Jones Customer Services Sharon lives in Devon and is the friendly voice on the end of the phone. She keeps the office organised and heads up our customer services and helpline.

Our mission is to help individuals and communities to mend the widening gap between cultures, races, generations and people of different wealth for current and future generations.Naftali Manddy Onchere is the CEO of Mend the Gap and is responsible for the day to day running and management of the organisation in consultation with David Seabright, Francis Montagu and James Nzala. Naftali brings more than 26 years’ experience in project and organisational management in the UK and overseas. He has a BSc Honours degree and is a former teacher and qualified trainer. He has served as a Director at Tolerance International UK, ACORD UK, Motivation Charitable Trust UK; Programme Manager at Netherlands Foreign Service and ETC East Africa Consultants BV; etc. He has extensive experience with youth, intergenerational and inter-cultural work and training both in the UK and in Eastern Africa. James Musau Nzala James Nzala is the Let Us Connect Programme Co-ordinator in Kenya. He has a BSc IT degree and is qualified in advanced web design (PHP, MySQL database, CSS & JavaScript coding), software and hardware trouble shooting and repair, IT-user training, and network building and management. Ben Ferguson Ben was one of the first to pioneer gap year experiences in Kenya with Mend the Gap. Since then he has become a long term volunteer and brings a wealth of business and hospitality experience to the organisation. He looks after our communications and relationships with our business partners. Nicholus Ole Murero Nick is Rifts Valley Co-ordinator for Mend the Gap in Kenya. Simon Ole Kerempe Simon is the Projects Officer for Mend the Gap in Narok, Kenya.

Work Skills Learning was established in 2005. We teach children, young people and adult students in different settings. We enable them to develop new skills and achieve qualifications to secure their entry into the world of work. At Work Skills Learning all learners are valued as individuals, and we use innovative ideas and practices to maximise their potential. Children & Young People Aged 16 – 25: Work Skills Learning provides a range of educational opportunities for children and young people facing barriers to their education. Our provisions are co-educational and cater for those who may have special educational needs associated with communication and interaction, cognition and learning, and/or social, emotional and mental health difficulties. Adult Learners: Work Skills Learning offers a variety of accredited courses for those looking to gain recognised skills qualifications acquired whilst working in their sector or for those just starting out on a new path. All courses aim to boost the confidence and improve the skills of course participants. Work Skills Learning works with a variety of partners on multiple sites across London. Our Past Work Skills Learning was founded in 2005 by Dayo Adeagbo. From 2000-2005 Dayo was the Head of Education at Feltham Young Offenders, responsible for providing education for children aged 11-17 and 18-21. In 2006 Work Skills Learning started providing academic and vocational courses for children and young adults. Another major development was our partnership with Hackney Learning Trust and The Urswick School, which continues to the present day, where we teach adult classes on Saturday mornings. Work Skills Learning has delivered a wide range of courses, to communities across Hackney. One of the most significant developments has been our work to train teaching assistants. Our Present We have extended our work with Local Authorities with the aim of helping as many children and young people as possible. We work closely with each child to ensure that they can play a full part in society and to give them the additional skills to move forward with their lives. We have facilities to deliver a wide curriculum from Entry Level to GCSE and beyond, as well as accredited skills-based courses, including an Arts & Crafts facility, music, design and ICT, all designed to give our students the best possible chance in gaining new qualifications. We are in our 10th year of delivering adult courses for individuals who wish to establish a career as a teaching assistant. This is offered to all schools, which enables us to train those who are already in the workforce, helping them to achieve career progression, using our specialism in SEN to support their learning. We have outstanding specialists who deliver the course with us. To date we have taught over 600 students, many of whom are now working in schools across London. This has been life changing for many of those who have studied with us.
