ECA has always been a place of experimentation and collaboration, celebrated for enabling students from different disciplines to work alongside and with each other, and for creating strong linkages with other institutions. We trace our history back to the Trustees’ Academy founded in the 1760s which, over the course of the next century, operated from some of the most iconic buildings in the city, including the University’s Old College and what is now the Royal Scottish Academy. The first Professorship in an ECA subject area was created for Music in 1839 in the name of John Reid, with the Watson Gordon Chair of Fine Art founded some forty years later, the first of its kind in the British Isles and a turning point in the teaching of the History of Art. Following the establishment of the Reid Concert series in 1841, which continues to this day, the Reid Concert Hall was built in 1859. We’ve been known as Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) since 1906, following a major reorganisation of higher art education in Scotland. At the time, we were governed by the city Council and divided into four Schools: Drawing and Painting, Design and Crafts, Architecture, and Sculpture. We moved into what is still our Main Building in 1909, when the first of our annual Revel parties took place and, by 1913, our Cast Collection had been installed in the Sculpture Court.

The British accessories brand was founded by best friends and ex-fashion buyers Jemma and Lesa, who met on their first day at the London College of Fashion. They bonded over a love of design, a passion to start their own business and a mutual struggle to find a watch that they wanted to wear. Lovers of vintage, the pair would trawl through antique markets to find timepieces, but, whilst beautiful, the cogs would often stop and start. After graduation, the girls went on to pursue successful careers in fashion buying, clocking up time at diverse fashion brands such as Topshop, ASOS and Selfridges. All the while, the idea of going it alone was gathering momentum until the day in 2011 when Jemma and Lesa made the leap, quit their jobs and set about creating their own beautiful, unique watches from the kitchen table. Named after Lesa’s great aunt whose spirited approach and energy was a huge inspiration to the girls, Olivia Burton debuted its first collection in September 2012. Its covetable, collectable styles, which now include a striking jewellery line-up, are inspired by vintage finds and the latest catwalk trends. Designs are brought to life at the brand’s pretty East London studio, where Jemma and Lesa work closely with their small team to ensure every piece is tweaked to perfection. The school has been fortunate to have had a rebuild under the Building Schools for the Future that was opened fully in September 2013. Having grown up in Norfolk, I am inspired by the great British countryside and coastline. My paintings show my love of painting, colour, creating surface pattern texture and playing with compositions. I mostly paint in oils but also love to combine medias. My range of contemporary botanical prints are a real contrast to my oil paintings. But they also show my absolute passion for nature and love of colour and pattern, thanks to my textiles design background.. You are welcome to visit me in Studio 9, which is set in beautiful Oaks Park, opposite Mayfield lavender fields in North Surrey. I am there for a few hours most days and can often be seen painting outside my studio with my dog Tilly by my side. It is at my studio that I run my children’s art parties and various art classes and workshops. I am a surface designer and have been designing and cutting stencils for almost 30 years - first for printed textiles, then for architectural sandblasted glass and currently for papercuts. I love simple, bold and graphic imagery and am inspired by primitive art, Scandinavian textiles, my Welsh heritage and the beautiful Gower landscape where I live, all mixed up with a love of illustration and design. Although I gained recognition for my distinctive architectural glass, undertaking large scale commissions for public and private spaces and meeting the Queen with my work, it is the hands on, simple and traditional technique of paper cutting which I currently find most gratifying. With just a scalpel, paper and cutting mat I create contemporary and humorous images which are designed to make you smile. My products sell across the world and in addition to winning an award at the prestigious Made by Hand exhibition I have been featured in the press. Everything on this site is designed or made by me and I source my products as locally as I possibly can, and always within the UK. I exhibit widely in galleries in the UK and attend many artist events in person as well as running paper cutting workshops from my studio.
