Control Shift

control shift

Bristol

Control Shift celebrates computational arts that explore the messy spaces in-between humans, nature and machines. We bring people together to re-imagine our relationships with technology through dialogue and arts. We live in a world where machines increasingly collect information about us, reducing our bodies and the things around us to streams of data. In turn the digital realm can feel abstract, and out of our control. The stuff of computers and digital infrastructure is often hidden out of sight and huge power imbalances exist around who is making technology and who benefits from it. Yet the impact of our interactions with machines and technologies are very much rooted in the body, materials, and emotions. Through workshops, discussions, installations and screenings Control Shift brings creative and critical approaches to technology. Control Shift 2020 was curated by Becca Rose, Martha King and Rod Dickinson, and you can visit the archive to find out more about the programme. In 2019 we produced ‘You Make the Rules’ which was part of Processing Community Day (a global celebration of ‘art, code and diversity’ initiated by the Processing Foundation). Control Shift Community The Control Shift network is a collective of digital artists, educators, producers, and technologists from Bristol (UK) and working internationally. If you are interested in joining the network or finding out more sign up to our newsletter sign up to our newsletter. We have an extended network of partners, funders, supporters and mentors including Knowle West Media Centre, Arnolfini, Watershed, Furtherfield, Aksioma, and Processing Foundation. We want our events to be welcoming and inclusive and we use the Berlin Code of Conduct as our guide.

Belhaven Hill School

belhaven hill school

Welcome to the Belhaven Hill School website. I hope that you enjoy this window into our wonderful school. Whether you are a parent looking for the best option for your family or an Old Belhavian keen to rekindle the magical relationships made during childhood, you would be so welcome to come and see us. Belhaven offers its children the very best start in life. Our core values of courage, creativity and courtesy encourage everyone at Belhaven to explore…whether it be our idyllic parkland campus and the beauty of the East Lothian coast or the mysteries of a broad range of subjects that stretch far beyond the curriculum. By promoting kindness, we continually support one another in the discovery of the world in which we live and seek to influence. The children’s exploration of this world, which starts with wonder at the growth of a seed or the hatching of a chick, can now be enhanced as they learn to harness the natural and digital resources around them; a well-positioned camera in a nesting box, controlled from a dormitory hideout by an app created in a combined Outdoor Education and Science lesson – that is the kind of composite experience that I wish for our children at Belhaven. In a school set up for boarding and day pupils, we have the enormous twin benefits of time and pastoral expertise. When these combine with ambitious children in a beautiful setting, there is no limit to what can be achieved. Come and see us to find out more – you can always be sure of a warm welcome. In the meantime, please do enjoy our website and our new video.

I was fortunate enough to be appointed Headteacher here at the school in January 2021. Our vision at King John is focused around ‘A Quality Education for All’. To enable our students to be happy and successful learners, we strive to create a caring, supportive and aspirational learning community, with high expectations and opportunities for all. We believe in offering a broad and balanced curriculum to enable students to flourish as individuals, and to achieve future success in whatever they choose to become later in life. This includes a strong emphasis on sport and the arts. We strive to nurture and develop our global citizens of the future by celebrating success and valuing aspiration. We are determined to ensure that every student succeeds and maximises their potential. The recruitment, retention and training of fully-qualified staff play a key part in our drive to secure strong academic outcomes for all students, and to instil a life-long love of learning. We understand the vitally important role of partnerships between families and school, and value our relationships with all members of the community we serve. We have a thriving sixth form, which has been significantly extended to provide a wealth of additional, state-of-the-art facilities.
