Materiality is central to my practice, which has evolved into a deep investigation into the spatial and tactile qualities of poetry. Considering words themselves as a material, I explore the textural layers that I encounter within poems by translating these into drawings, paintings, collages and mixed media sculptural forms, ranging from books and ladders, to unique forms that I have developed and call ‘Poem-Houses’. These ‘Poem-Houses’ have evolved as a result of my experience of poems, as ‘things’ which feel very much like ‘rooms’ and in which I am able to spend time exploring the possibilities of mood and meaning that are part of the atmosphere there and around whose delicate edges, insights and alternative or new meanings begin to suggest themselves. My work becomes a visual refrain – an echo, of sorts – responding to what I have found in such places by means of a process that feels to be almost archaeological and to apparently be reconnecting with how it all began for me. As my process continues, the raw material that I have discovered inside a poem transmutes into and gradually becomes a delicate interweaving of words, natural forms, tissue, wire, thread, wax, with found and other materials, as if by some kind of alchemy, so eluding definition and transcending boundaries of categorisation. Such an unfettering of my “attitude of mind” (see Kathleen Jamie’s poem) has encouraged me to cross boundaries that are perceived between disciplines, ‘allowing’ me to work with media such as video and porcelain clay to create short video and ceramic pieces, through which I experience a liberating feeling of ‘flow’, my natural curiosity piqued by all that I do not know

Spiral Stabilization works on similar principles, releasing tension in vertical muscle chains by strengthening the spiral chains, hence the name. It has a positive effect on a number of other ailments as well as a great compliment to any other training or recreational sport. The exercise is suitable for everyone. Created in 1998 on the initiative of His Hon George Dobry CBE QC to fulfil a growing need for support, advice and training to young lawyers from countries of Central and Eastern Europe, the Foundation was named after Lord Slynn of Hadley, formerly the British judge at the European Court of Justice and then a law lord, in recognition of his contribution to the development of the principles and practice of European Law in its broadest sense. Between 1999 and 2004, under the leadership of Lord Slynn, the Foundation organised two-day or three-day workshops, mainly in the ten states which were to join the European Union in 2004. These workshops were mostly concerned with EU law and practice, but some of them touched on human rights law. There were also mutual exchange visits, funded by the former British Association for Central and Eastern Europe, between senior judges and senior court administrators in Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria and their counterparts in this country. In addition the Foundation organised a prestigious annual lecture on a Europe-related topic, and brought one young lawyer each year to London for nine months for a mix of experience gained from attending academic lectures, working in City solicitors’ firms and barristers’ chambers and meeting senior members of the judiciary. Because public funding for these activities dried up after 2004 and the Foundation was unable to secure alternative sources of funds, its activities were steadily reduced between 2004 and 2009 (the year when Lord Slynn died).However since 2009, the Foundation has widened its purpose, and is steadily reasserting its influence as the principal exporter of British judicial know how to an international audience.

I work with natural elements to record places and periods of time, mainly using plants and their naturally occurring dyes. After a rural upbringing I moved to London in 2000 and have lived and worked here since. I graduated with a degree in Fine Art from Goldsmiths College in 2003 and recently completed the Artist Teacher Scheme at Oxford Brookes University with distinction. I am currently working as a freelance artist and teacher having previously taught art and photography in mainstream education for over a decade, becoming a head of department before deciding to concentrate on my own artistic practice after giving birth to my son. I continue my love of teaching by delivering workshops and courses. My current practice explores the change and growth of plants in my garden and other places which have significance to me. I work with time-based processes and alternative printmaking techniques, using pigments in plant dyes and rust, to record periods in time or the status of plants at a particular moment. I am interested in the unpredictability of these processes and the effects that they have both on the plants used to create them and the environment they are created in. I am currently investigating how nature can be used to record periods of time by creating work in the environment, documenting the effects of natural elements such as rain. I have work in private and public collections internationally and have exhibited nationally including at the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair for the past three years. I completed a residency in 2018 as part of the New: Defence arts project in Essex which culminated in a solo exhibition of the work I created.
