Both hold various qualifications in outdoor skills from 1st Aid wilderness to Forest school and have been teaching in the outdoors for the past 15 years. But their biggest adventure happened In 2010 which turned out to shape the way they live and teach now. “After many years teaching Bushcraft we both felt we wanted a more authentic platform from which to teach these outdoor skills from. We were tired of teaching using information from others in books. So, we packed our bags, quit our jobs, bid goodbye to our lives in the UK and went on a truly wild journey to the mountains and Forests of Eastern Washington USA to take part in a 5 month course living in the depths of a beautiful cedar woodland.

STAA is a small charity based at the historic St Anns Allotments site, just a mile from the bustling city centre of Nottingham. STAA manages a number of highly regarded projects across 30+ plots at St Anns Allotments providing community benefit & offering a wide variety of volunteering opportunities. Our projects make a significant contribution to the upkeep of this amazing Grade 2* listed heritage site and the preservation of habitat and wildlife in the urban oasis at St Anns Allotments. STAA was initially established in 1997, from a local campaign group that came together with the prime objective of saving and protecting the St Anns Allotment site (Hungerhill Gardens, Stonepit Coppice Gardens and Gorseyclose Gardens) from redevelopment. STAA became a registered charity in 1998 and over the course of 20 years have been key partners in the delivery of large-scale infrastructure and Heritage Lottery Fund projects which have contributed to the restoration and regeneration of St Anns Allotments. Our research projects have also captured much of the St Anns Allotments’ unique history. STAA managed the allotment site and tenancies until December 2017 through a service level agreement with Hungerhill Developments Ltd. The site is now managed directly by HDL. In July 2020, STAA converted to a Foundation CIO* and continues its commitment to protecting, preserving and promoting the heritage, horticultural, wildlife and community value of St Anns Allotments. STAA works inside and outside the site gates with local schools, community groups and partner organisations to promote the heritage of the site, provide education and volunteering opportunities along with social welfare, recreational and leisure activities to improve the wellbeing of our wider communities in St Ann’s, Mapperley and inner-city Nottingham. A qualified, experienced Mountain Leader and Rock Climbing Instructor, I was born and grew up in Hayfield at the foot of Kinder Scout where the mass trespass paved the way for hillwalking as we know it. My grandfather raced at Le Mans with Rob Lawrie, a boot maker who supplied the Alpine Club expeditions and made boots for Hillary’s ascent of Everest. Given this background, it was inevitable I’d be involved in the outdoors. I love this history but am equally excited about helping future generations and those new to the mountains. I’ve worked in the outdoors since 2006. I believe education and learning is vital and that mountaineering can be a powerful tool to develop people – whether this is a long, life changing journey or simply climbing a single peak as one-off challenge. In addition to working as a Mountain Leader and Instructor my expertise in logistics, planning & project management means I have the capability to deliver highly successful events across a broad range of sectors. I provide logistical & event support services for adventurous activities & challenges to a range of customers including charities, schools, private companies & high net worth individuals. I enjoy a range of outdoor, active sports; hillwalking, skiing, climbing, sailing, cycling (on the road) and swimming in open water. I enjoy introducing the next generation to the outdoors – through the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and supporting primary schools. I’m based in Manchester and work predominantly in the Peak District, Lake District, Yorkshire Dales & Snowdonia, but I am UK mobile.

Matt WEston Matt WEston Education Consultant / Director Matt began his career working in industry using his attention to detail for quality assurance purposes, during this time he passed several courses on risk assessing and auditing. Matt has been involved in training, since early 2000s where he set up and provided training programs for individuals in industry. Since starting a teaching career Matt has trained, coached and provided CPD for both ITT and experienced teachers. Matt is a STEM Learning Facilitator and frequently works for Southampton University and St George’s SLP providing bespoke Chemistry and Teaching & Learning CPD for schools. More recently Matt has been working internationally, consulting with governments, industries and universities to develop national curriculums and schemes in Science, Technolog, Engineering and Maths (STEAM). Matt still enjoys tutoring students at KS3 and GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics helping students achieve a better understanding of the subjects and an increased confidence to apply themselves. One of the biggest comments from students is “thank you for making me believe I can do Science”. Matt has had a love of the outdoors all of his life and his spare time is spent enjoying bushcraft, hiking, canoeing and cycling. Matt has worked closely with BushcraftUK and Forest Knights and his passion is now to combine his love of teaching with his passion for the outdoors so that new generations can be taught relevant content whilst developing important personal skills including communication, leaderships, problem solving, mental health and resilience.
