Earth in Common started as a grassroots movement under the name Leith Community Crops in Pots. We were born in a barren concrete yard in the heart of Leith, an underused and unloved spot. Our founder, Evie Murray, wanted to give her children a healthy outdoor experience in a crowded urban environment. Starting in her backyard (Dr Bell’s Yard), Evie and her children began to grow their own fruit, vegetables and herbs. The physical and emotional benefits were obvious and, as the children enjoyed learning about food, they loved to eat their veg! Evie shared more about the many environmental, social and educational benefits of growing food in urban areas, inspiring other mothers to join in. She recruited a board and rolled out her work across Leith. We now have several integrated projects.

The Goliath Digital Learning Hub (DLH) is made up of teachers from our Goliath Trust schools which are located in disadvantaged areas in and round Belfast. With schools currently focusing on learning in the classroom and at home, the DLH teachers continue to focus on ways to address this. The DLH teachers support one another, through mentorship and learning communities, and have shared our ‘Gino the Dino’ Learn to Earn initiative with the wider school communities. The Learn to Earn initiative aims to motivate learners to engage and complete different daily tasks that promote social and emotional wellbeing, reading and other teacher activities. It is crucial to deliver the message that teachers care about their pupils education by encouraging different ways of learning, daily contact and check ins.

My stained glass is designed to enrich the emotional experience of the viewer. I am interested in ideas. My stained glass is the result of thoughtful dedication as I explore less obvious ways to approach a design. My stained glass explores a use of an iconography, influenced by nature, combined with our deep-seated human need of ornamentation and decoration. I seek to marry harmony with visual stimulation. I seek to enhance, uplift and delight. I seek to create visual sanctuaries of respite from the stressful, chaotic world of today. I am fascinated by the idea of a ‘universal visual harmony’ and how it invokes feelings of positivity and well-being in the viewer. There is no formula for creating visual harmony and I am constantly seeking and exploring new solutions

High Grange School’s multi-disciplinary approach incorporates best practices and autism-friendly strategies and supports in order to meet the educational needs of students who have ASD. Our students learn how to develop and use effective compensatory strategies to overcome difficulties in social and emotional processing, communication and flexibility in thinking and behaviour, all of which can combine to have a negative impact on their learning. The design of the school; its environment and facilities; and the structure and delivery of our educational programmes are created to reduce the stress and anxieties often associated with an autism spectrum condition. Our enabling teaching approach provides multiple physical and practical opportunities as well as visual supports for learning. This helps students to achieve their full potential by understanding and dealing with personal challenges while making the most of their abilities and strengths. Managing expectations realistically is a core part of our educational programme. Individualised Learning Plans are created for all students with input from the school’s specialist therapists. These plans include strategies to enable students to manage their anxieties; to regulate their emotional responses; and to reduce or eliminate negative and inappropriate behaviours which are preventing effective learning and positive social interactions. During the school day students have access to a varied and stimulating curriculum. The Classes are grouped by Key Stage and students are taught in small groups of up to 6.
