Hi there - I'm Paul Green, the founder of The Business Community. I've been an independent business owner since 2003 and love working with small businesses; in particular family-run businesses. I'd like to share a little story about the reason for this and what my "why" is. What drives me My father ran his own small business designing, manufacturing and supplying electrical control panels to various companies within the UK and overseas. At the age of 11, unfortunately, the business went bust - as happens to quite a few businesses. This meant having to move house, move schools - money was tight and the atmosphere was not that great in the household. Having gone through this experience, it obviously left an impression. A few years ago, I attended a workshop (run by Jacky Sherman) looking at why a person is in business and exploring the type of businesses that I enjoyed working with. In this session, the seed that was subconsciously planted many years before emerged. It became apparent that what was driving me in my endeavours to support small, family-run businesses, is that I didn't want any children associated with the business owners to go through the trauma of a failed business! This is why I strive to impact the performance of the businesses I work with; having them be better at what they do - focusing on profitability and cashflow within the business. My journey My experience and knowledge of 20 years being employed by someone else and to date, working with 100s of business owners, gives me the confidence and ability to offer business advice, coaching and training when given the opportunity to do so. Having experienced the trials and tribulations that face a small business on that entrepreneurial journey, I am passionate about making sure businesses don't make the same mistakes that I made en route! I am a big believer in collaboration and encourage businesses to work together to grow their businesses; as well as offering help and support to each other for mutual gain. In 2020, my story culminated in the creation of The Business Community. This brings together my principles of businesses working together. Her path included earning an art degree from High Point College (now university), many years spent as an art director for print media, and many more teaching preschool locally. She founded Outside the Lines Art Studio in 2011 to share her belief in the transformative power of visual art with her community. WHAT WE DO! We are not a franchisor who demands you to deposit thousands before training you to run a location of their business. It is important to remember that not every business should be franchised. Not every business is successful, nor is every business person. We empower you to own your company, trademarks, and products. We train you to evaluate and understand the role and responsibilities that you will be undertaking as a business owner. As a consultant and trainer we will be taking what works and what has worked in care business and formalizing these systems and procedures so that they may be taught to and implemented by your own business. As such, our services will include: Start Up of New Business or Reinvigorate Exisiting Business: Our start up service is designed for organisations or individuals looking for a new start up for domicilliary care or supported accomodation. Our primary responsibilities to reinvigorate exisiting business will relate to establishing a marketing foundation focused on promoting your brand, legally protecting your trademarks and establishing quality standards for your products and/or services. You will be required to establish and maintain performance standards respecting the guidance and standards set by regulatory body to deliver quality of care. Leadership: Don't ever forget that you can be your own boss. It's up to you to set examples of the type of working environment and mentality you want in your staff and business. How it gets steered is up to you. Brand Building: Your brand is what makes you stand out. Employee Training: We have training sessions for management to take back ownership. Our full package courses, can be an invaluable help. Providing On-going Support: Support includes technical and day-to-day operating advice. Business As the owner of your own business, you’ll be in charge of the hours you work, giving you flexibility to work around family, social, or other career requirements as needed (ideal if you’re taking c-ADI training, for example). You can vary your driving instructor salary easily by taking on more clients or toning down your schedule as necessary. However, remember that it can take some time for a new ADI to build up a reputation, and you may not have the opportunity to work quite as many hours as you’d like during the first few months of owning the business. Franchise/Partnership The good things about franchises is that you’ll still have some degree of control over how much you work, although many companies will require you to commit to working a minimum number of hours per week if they have a large client database. You may also be tied into a contract that can dictate the number of hours you work. Many contracts are set at 6 or 12 months, with some simply being ‘rollover’ contracts that continue until you provide notice of cancellation. Overheads Business If you’re going down the ‘own business’ route, you’ll be wholly responsible for any business overheads, which for driving instructors can be quite significant. You’ll be required to supply your own vehicle, pay fuel costs and insurance, and ensure the vehicle is safe, well maintained, and is serviced annually. As a new business owner, you may be required to be in business for a number of years before your profits are significantly higher than your business outgoings. Becoming a driving instructor isn’t always easy, but rest assured it’s worth it in the end!
