We’re a group of migrant women based in East Glasgow and together we’re creating a vibrant, female-led collective based around our favourite thing: food! By swapping recipes, ideas and skills, we’re making women’s lives brighter. Our not-for-profit organisation brings together women from all over the world, ending social isolation and empowering them to develop their talents- in the kitchen and beyond. 1. WE ARE A SOCIAL ENTERPRISE When we say ‘not-for-profit’, we mean just that! We believe that making a difference to people’s lives is more important than making money. Soul Food Sisters’ role is to empower migrant women in the local community to start their own businesses, encourage their abilities and increase confidence. That’s much more valuable than a fistful of tenners. 2. IT’S A LEARNING CURVE Sharing skills is a big deal for us. We are paid a flat rate and we all work together, which can mean anything from peeling bags of spuds to attending high-flying business meetings. By learning from each other, we can become stronger and more powerful together. 3. WE ARE ALL WOMEN We are built on the idea of sisterhood, so Soul Food Sisters is a women-only workers co-op, open to females from diverse backgrounds who love to cook. (Sorry, guys!). But if you’re female and you’d like to join our collective, get in contact as we would love to hear from you. If you work with us for a while, you could be offered membership to the co-operative. 4. EVERYTHING WE GET, WE PUT BACK IN Soul Food Sisters have an appetite for making great food, but when it comes to business, we’re not greedy. Any surplus cash after paying wages goes straight back into the collective. Also our assets are locked, so in the unlikely event we go bankrupt, nobody will be allowed to go home with the soup urns or chopping boards! 5. WE ARE A DEMOCRACY All the women in the Soul Food Sisters collective get a fair share and a listening ear. We make all our decisions by consensus, which isn’t always the quickest way, or the easiest. But consensus means that everyone is treated with respect and that we genuinely make decisions as a unified group. Every single one of us has equal ownership. 6. WE ARE ETHICAL To us, having a clear conscience is just as important as having a clean kitchen. We source ethical ingredients wherever possible and support other co-ops, making sure to buy our food locally. Of course, sometimes there are ingredients - like rice paper, for example - that we have to go further afield to find! But ethically sourced food is our utmost priority. 7. WE BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF FOOD We believe that food has the power to bring people together. By harnessing the spirit of Glasgow and it’s culturally diverse and fascinating communities, we provide food that celebrates diversity and for people of all cultures to enjoy together. 8. WE ARE SMART LADIES FROM ALL OVER THE GLOBE At the moment, Soul Food Sisters is made up of eight women from 5 different continents. From Malaysia and Cuba to Poland and Thailand, we are a culturally mixed group, with many skills to share. And our talents extend further than just the kitchen. Together our cooks can do anything, whether it’s teaching German, making wine, designing buildings or driving trains! 9.THE HIDDEN GARDENS HAVE HELPED US GROW We would not be here without the help of the Hidden Gardens, at Tramway. This is the place where we met and cooked together for the first time, and we are grateful for their continued support. 10. AND FINALLY…WE MAKE GREAT FOOD Our food is what makes us tick. It’s who we all are, what we grew up with, what brings us together. We believe that our food is a reflection of our individual personalities and family traditions. And we’d like to share it with everyone!

This is upsetting for the staff and volunteers who look after them, at this much loved family learning facility (open daily). Donations are being collected through crowd funding to make the site secure, so together we can stop the abuse. Funding has been attracted by Retrofit Balsall Heath for up to 700 homes. Deadline for return of applications is Wednesday 23 November . Delays and even disappointments are possible with a free scheme, but “if you don’t ask, you dont get”. There’s no household income cap, or requirement to be on benefits, but the scheme is for older homes with poor energy rating (D,E,F,G EPCs). The scheme is completely free for eligible owner-occupiers. Private landlords need to pay a one-third contribution. There is a new webpage that tells people more about the case for setting up this new structure, separate from Birmingham City Council, (but working with it of course) to power up our ability to solve problems, find opportunities and get communication and coordination working in our complex and multicultural neighbourhood. Oxford International has grown to be one of the top 10 businesses sponsored by the Trust and remains closely associated with it today. The education opportunities we can offer students from around the world have grown in diversity and size since then, enabling us to support over 500,000 students since 1991. A Brief Timeline of the last 29 years In 1993, we established our first UK adult English language school with the acquisition of Greenwich School of English. In 1999, we opened the Brighton School of English, offering General English courses. Oxford International added Bucksmore Education to our family to provide high-quality summer courses to individual students in 2003. Growing our presence in the UK’s academic centre, in 2010, we were delighted to acquire Oxford Sixth Form College in the centre of Oxford next to Oriel College. In 2013, Oxford International went international for the first time, acquiring our Vancouver and Toronto English language schools. In 2017, International College Dundee began teaching integrated Bachelors and Masters courses. Distance shot - school building (Small) The school has over 1200 students with a thriving Sixth Form of 180 students, all taught in a state of the art building. The innovative and unique design of the building creates a calm atmosphere, very different to that of many secondary schools. The school has a long tradition in the town being established in 1905. It met in the town hall until the first purpose-built school known as Pudsey and District Secondary and Technical School was opened in 1911. The school subsequently became known as Pudsey Grammar School. Although the school is taught in a state of the art building, our core values are highly traditional based on the goal of ensuring that every student reaches their true potential. Our school is not just about the students gaining knowledge and qualifications although these are extremely important. We believe in teaching young people core values of decency, social skills and how to be a good citizen in an ever changing world. We want their character to develop and grow and for them to leave us with an inquiring and independent mind. Class content consists of a continuous flow of movements that are well balanced and designed to develop and strengthen, stretch and tone, as well as mobilise your joints. I ensure that you are well supported and able to perform the exercises properly, so that you understand what you are trying to achieve and how you can benefit the most. You can also practice as much as you like in between your class should you wish, as I record, edit and upload my weekly Pilates class to my On Demand Video Library. You will certainly develop movement skills that you never thought you had - or had perhaps been long forgotten. One thing is sure; by the end of each of your Pilates classes, whether face-to-face or online, you will have used every muscle! JFP Beginners/Refreshers Pilates These classes are also a great if are brand new to Pilates exercise, or as a refresher if you have done Pilates in the past and want to take it up again. See my latest Beginners information HERE JFP Core Central Pilates In these classes I cater for all different levels and abilities, so that you can keep the exercises gentle and restorative, or you can progress and challenge yourself when you feel ready, with more progressive, higher level movement options. These classes are fantastic way to further develop your knowledge and experience of Pilates. JFP Intermediate Pilates During all of these classes I offer progressive and more dynamic exercise options, which are ideal for you if you already have a good level of fitness from other types of activities, or sport, or if you already have a good knowledge of Pilates exercise and are looking for that extra challenge. JFP Advanced Pilates Ideal if you have been practising Pilates for quite some time, are fit and healthy and would like to push the boundaries by joining a class that often includes a powerful and challenging abdominal workout section, with exercises taken from the original classical mat sequences developed by Joseph Pilates. What do I need? All you need to do to take part in Pilates are some comfortable clothes, and if taking part in online classes, a space to lie down and access to a laptop, PC, iPad, tablet or mobile phone. A mat is optional, although most people tend to have their own. If not you are welcome to borrow one of mine. A Pilates head cushion can be useful, or a folded towel will do the same job if you do not have one. Online classes take place via the online meeting platform ZOOM which is ever so easy to set up. If you are not so sure, you can always contact me to help you and you can also take a look at my ZOOM Hints and Tips article in my blog area. What do I need to remember? You should always listen to your own body and work at a level that is right for you, especially when participating in online classes. I aways say that nothing I say is ever compulsory; if you feel like you need to take a rest that is absolutely what you must do. If at any point during your class you begin to feel faint, dizzy or have physical discomfort, you should stop immediately and seek medical advice. Please follow instructions careful and apply your judgement regarding the suitability of any exercises, choosing the level and any progressions that are appropriate for you, and resting when you need to do so. Everyone has a right to speak and that includes you. Clear, concise communication is important and will help you to get your message across, whether that be in a work environment or in a personal capicity. Most people are not natural communicators or born public speakers. The vast majority of people are self-conscious, fearful and nervous about speaking in public. The "little voice" in their head is constantly over-thinking: "What will he/she/they think of me? What if I go blank and forget what I am saying? What will happen if I make a mistake?"
