My name is Pippa King and I have been teaching piano ever since I was 16 (I’m now the wrong side of 40). I studied piano to Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) Grade 8 standard and also have ABRSM Grade 7 Musicianship, the highest Musicianship Grade at the time I sat it. I also have Grade 7 Recorder, Grade 5 Oboe both ABRSM qualifications and A Level Music. I have recently made the move from sunny Hull in Yorkshire to North London. (I am now based in N6, in between Crouch End and Highgate Village, very different to Hull and very nice too). I left some great pupils behind but am very much looking forward to teaching in London and already have a timetable that is filling up with equally great students, some being adults but mostly school students – there is never a wrong age and always a right age to start playing the piano! My emphasis is absolutely that learning music and piano should be fun, enjoyable and rewarding. Students learn at their own speed and are able to explore areas of music that interest them as well as learning a sound grounding in past and modern popular piano music and good rudiments. I worked for Hull Music Service teaching piano and keyboard where I also supported Music GCSE students from 2002 to 2007, when I left to concentrate on my private teaching practice. I have a very high success rate with practical, theory and musicianship exams though sitting exams is not compulsory. See FAQs for more info. I am a registered teacher with the ABRSM, a member of the Musicians Union and have an Enhanced Certificate to work with children from the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB check, now a DBS check). I also played keyboard for Hessle Ceilidh Band for over 10 years who were based in East Yorkshire – moving to London makes this now just about impossible (!) – and I worked in a Hull high school from 2016-2018, teaching piano/keyboard to support the V-Cert course there. Previously I have directed a recorder group entering music festivals, I played oboe with the Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra and I have accompanied instrumental exams and music festivals. In Japanese, Ippo Ippo is written as 一歩一歩。 一 is the Japanese character for 'one'. 歩 is the character for 'step'. This makes 一歩一歩 literally 'one step one step'. In other words: 'step by step' or 'one step at a time'! The choice of name came about partly simply because of the nice, bouncy ring that 'Ippo Ippo' has to it. However, more important is the meaning. At Ippo Ippo, learning Japanese is less about sprinting to memorise every vocab item, grammar point or kanji, and more about the process of putting one step forward at a time, finding ways to have fun and explore through the language. Prior to joining The Edge, I started my career as a French teacher, became a Head of Year and went on to work on senior leadership teams for ten years in three secondary schools in Nottinghamshire and the West Midlands. Hello and welcome – thanks for dropping in. My name is Adrian Lloyd although those that know me well find that Ade is what I answer to best. I am a full-time designer, maker and teacher and am passionate about traditional handcrafts. I live and work in North West Cumbria in a tiny farming hamlet nestled mid-way between the northernmost edge of the Lake District National Park and the Solway Coast. Most of my making and teaching takes place in an original threshing barn, one of several historic outbuildings, which, along with our 300-year-old farmhouse, surround a cobbled courtyard. I specialise in creating beautiful, functional, traditional hand-crafted items from green wood (that is wood that looks like a freshly felled tree and still contains all of its moisture) using traditional methods and razor-sharp hand tools like axes and knives. My craft is for everyday use in the kitchen and around the home, it is designed to be used hard and for a long time, hopefully by generations of the same family. I developed my passion for handcraft from a very young age and thrive when being able to ignite a new passion for creativity in others. After a design-based university education, I then spent nearly the next twenty years teaching children and adults in both formal and informal education settings, indoors and out. However, I then took the decision to pursue craft on a full-time basis and now earn my living from all things Slöjd! I have been carving on and off for the best part of probably thirty years and have added turning, furniture making, basket weaving and anything else green wood along the way. I also do some blacksmithing, bladesmithing and tool making and make all of my own bowl turning tools. I can normally be found somewhere along or between the length and breadth of this great island teaching some aspect of this wonderful craft we call greenwood, or holed up bothering some wood in my farmhouse workshop in Cumbria. I try to use only locally sourced British hardwoods in my craft that are harvested from either wind-blown trees or from sustainably managed woodland as part of a natural thinning and woodland regeneration process. I have favourite woods for specific purposes but will generally use any wood that is suitable for the function and form of the piece being worked on. I have a real interest in the way our relationships with the natural environment develop and have studied for qualifications in bushcraft leadership, practical ethnobotany and plant identification, wildlife identification and tracking and woodland management, including the identification and management of veteran trees. I draw on this knowledge and experience to ensure my teaching provides rich, holistic and rewarding learning opportunities. It is our Centenary in 2021 and 2022. Since 1921, the City of Birmingham Choir has entertained audiences with a wide and adventurous repertoire. Performing in historic Town Hall and in magnificent Symphony Hall, we have enjoyed a warm musical partnership with the city’s outstanding orchestra, the CBSO. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, the choir continued to rehearse and present performances online. We have enjoyed rehearsing and performing together again since the autumn of 2021 as well as giving live concerts in Symphony Hall, Town Hall and Tewkesbury Abbey. Our Centenary concert centrepiece is Vaughan Williams’ A Sea Symphony in November 2022. Read about the choir: History and Concert Archive. Our Conductor and Musical Director is Adrian Lucas. Adrian brings a wealth of experience as one of the country’s leading choral directors and conductors. Composer, teacher, conductor and all-round versatile musician, Colin Baines is our Accompanist. We have sung the major choral works as well as challenging newer compositions and a wide range of smaller scale music. The standard of our performances draws consistent praise. In Symphony Hall… As well as the CBSO, we have worked with the Philharmonia, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Swan, BBC Concert Orchestra, Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra and Westminster Chamber Orchestra. We joined the CBSO Chorus and CBSO for the much-praised centenary performances of Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius, The Apostles and The Kingdom. We have performed some of the more intimate choral repertoire in ‘out of town’ venues such as Tewkesbury Abbey and Gloucester Cathedral. Easter 2017 saw our second hugely successful and enjoyable overseas tour – singing Handel’s Messiah in the Stephansdom in Vienna – following a tour to Paris in April 2015. A highly acclaimed performance of James MacMillan’s Seven Last Words from the Cross, our stylish annual Handel’s Messiah performances, collaborations with Birmingham Schools Symphony Orchestra (Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast in 2017), Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 with period instruments – these are some highlights. Amongst our 90th birthday celebrations was the ground-breaking Equinox concert bringing together musicians from many cultures. A Christmas Treats CD was recorded in the same year. Exploring both more familiar territory (Handel, Bach, Monteverdi, Brahms, Mozart, Haydn, Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Holst, Britten, Finzi), and less well-known, (such as Samuel Wesley, Howells, Rautavaara, Kenneth Leighton and Jonathan Dove), we continue to plan enterprising programmes. June 2015, saw us in jazz mode, performing the popular Zimbe! and a new composition, The Rain Queen, by our own composer, John Barber.
