Wells Park School

wells park school

Essex

Welcome Wells Park School is a LA funded residential primary school which caters for pupils between 5 and 11 years old, who have an educational statement for social, emotional and mental health difficulties. The children board at Wells Park School from Monday to Friday during term time and are referred to the school by Essex County Council. The site is based in a semi-rural area of Essex, close to the London Borough of Redbridge. Educational The education team at Wells Park School strive to help children who have disengaged from school and learning, to develop strategies to manage their behaviour in a classroom. With small classes of up to ten pupils and a minimum of one teacher and one Higher Level Teaching Assistant in each classroom, the staff at Wells Park are able to introduce and maintain clear classroom boundaries for the pupils. Through providing ability, rather than age, appropriate learning tasks, children at Wells Park can experience success in learning and begin to engage and enjoy learning in school. Residential The pupils arrive at school on a Monday morning and leave on Friday, spending four evenings and nights at the school. Residentially, the children are grouped according to their social needs into four ‘houses’ of up to ten children and three care officers. The ‘houses’ have a family feel to them and mirror the interests and personalities of the children living there. As well as sharing breakfast and dinner with their ‘house’ the children are encouraged to develop their self-help skills and to take on responsibilities appropriate to their age and abilities. The children’s life experiences and social skills are greatly enhanced through the variety of activities provided throughout the week. The aim is to support families and carers to enjoy positive experiences and relationships both with their child and the school. Tokens There is a whole school Token Economy system which allows children to earn tokens every ten minutes in school and fifteen minutes residentially, for times when they are making positive choices with their behaviour, such as listening to the adults, being in the right space with their group and getting on with the set task. Our pupils are very motivated to earn tokens as they can exchange their token slips for evening activities throughout the week and saver trips at the end of each year.

Tff Tutors

London

Tuition for Fruition Tutors is a new and rapidly expanding business that provides private tuition to KS1,KS2, KS3, GCSE and A Level students with the aim of enabling its students to achieve their academic potential. Our core team is comprised of experienced and PGCE accredited professionals who above all else are passionate about teaching and strive to make a positive difference to the development of their students. In the short time that we have been operating we have managed to help a considerable amount of children and relying wholly on word of mouth recommendations we have been able to expand our operations throughout the UK and abroad. There is a social focus which underpins our work and we want to be able to reach out to those parents and children who wouldn’t traditionally have access to tuition. Managing Director/Founder Abdul-Raheem Ahmed Abdul-Raheem is an experienced teacher and examiner with 12 years of experience in education. He began tutoring during his A levels helping out students from economically deprived families and also SEN students which ignited his passion for teaching and contributing to his community and has led to him tutoring to this day. He has personally taught over 450 students during this time alongside his full time secondary teaching role. Abdul-Raheem realised that many of the more vulnerable members of society were being left behind while others were being exploited by tutoring companies. He decided to create a business that would focus on making tutoring accessible to these children by keeping costs low and quality high by ensuring all lessons are taught by qualified teachers. Furthermore coming from a working class and second generation immigrant background he understands the problems and pitfalls many of these students face. Therefore he decided not just to focus on the academic aspect but the students holistically. To that end has organised consistent and regular extra curricular activities for local members of his community. This allows him to have a pastoral role within the local community and is not just limited to students of TFF Tutors. Tackling the rising evil of drug dealing and other criminal activities is another passion of his and by taking this proactive approach he hopes to provide a focus and escape route for those who may be targeted by those nefarious elements of society. You can find more details about what is done in the extracurricular section.

Sew Creative

sew creative

Altrincham

Hi I’m Kate, I set up Sew Creative in 2016, however a lot of my customers are often surprised to hear that I haven’t always loved sewing - in fact I even paid one of my friends to sew my Year 7 Textiles project for me, then ditched the subject as soon as I was allowed in the following year! I eventually learnt to sew when I made the decision to study Fashion Design in Manchester. After my degree I worked in the fashion industry in both London and New York, before heading back up North to train to be a Textiles teacher and settle in Altrincham. Whilst teaching, I started to advertise sewing classes - it was originally just a way to earn a little extra money. I started on a table in Hobbycraft with a couple of old machines and some bits and pieces from my personal fabric stash. I sat there for several weeks, with no customers or interest, and was about to give up when Sue (now a member of staff!), my first ever customer, approached me asking if I’d teach her how to make her own patterns - and Sew Creative was born! Alex MANAGER Alex joined the Sew Creative team having left teaching in February 2020, just two weeks before the first National Lockdown! When she was a teacher, she taught social science, so sewing was a bit of a change! Alex sews most of her own clothes and can usually be found wearing at least one me-made item in store during the week. Alex teaches our adult classes as well as our teenagers. She is also the shop’s manager, so if you need anything, she is always happy to help! You can find her on Instagram @sewalexfaye "My favourite thing about being able to sew is making things that fit me properly. I'm almost 6ft tall so finding ready to wear trousers and dresses the right length has always been a challenge. Now I just make them to fit my body rather than the other way around!" Dawn TUTOR Dawn has been with us at Sew Creative for two years now and has become the heart and soul of the shop. Dawn is our resident neat-freak so she keeps us all nice and ship-shape. Dawn has been sewing for years and regularly makes herself gorgeous dresses and coats. Dawn can be found teaching our adults on a Tuesday and our Saturday classes. She is warm of heart and always up for a good natter! Jayne TUTOR Jayne joined Sew Creative in September 2020, in the midst of a Global Pandemic has has taken the rollercoaster ride like a true pro. Jayne’s career has been in lingerie design and she has worked with some of the biggest names in the biz! Jayne sews her won clothes, and loves making tailored trousers, she is always the picture of sophistication! Jayne works most weekdays and every other Saturday, teaching our kids and adult classes. She also teaches our Monday night adult lesson! George CHIEF EXECUTIVE George is the newest and most adorable member of the Sew Creative team. He’s not old enough to sew yet, but can often be found in the shop sporting a mum-made outfit. You’ll also find his full modelling portfolio on Instagram, where you are guaranteed a regular dose of cuteness. He keeps Eric and Dotty very busy and despite being so small, is always the centre of attention! We’re all convinced he’ll be the next Patrick Grant! Eric HEAD OF SECURITY Hi, I’m Eric. I can often be found guarding the front door at Sew Creative. While I might look big, tough and scary, I am actually quite a lovely chap. I love treats, cuddles, any food that you might be eating, and more cuddles. Please feel free to pick me up and cuddle me, instead of doing any sewing. I look forward to meeting you soon. Thank you. Dotty THE DUCHESS Hi, I’m Dotty. I am pretty shy, but if you’re quiet and gentle I will come for some cuddles. I can often be found sleeping in my basket, or following my Mum around - just to make sure that she’s still there! Volunteers and Party Facilitators In addition to our part and full time members of staff, Sew Creative also has a team of amazing volunteers who help us out every week. Lisa, Sue , Catherine and Liz can be found lending a helping hand in our kids and adults classes, alongside some of our teen sewers who give up their precious weekends to work with us! If you book a party with us, you will almost certainly meet our lovely party facilitators. Evie and Daisy have been sewing with us for years and as they have grown up, have proven themselves to be very capable seamstresses. Both ladies are excellent with kids and adults alike!

Highbridge

Sami Green is a teacher, mentor, and workshop facilitator in Bristol and North Somerset. She completed a Fine Art BA at University Centre Somerset with Honours in 2021. Before this, Sami worked for 15 years creating, coordinating and building imaginative decorative environments for events. Wedding magazines and blogs across the world featured her styled photoshoots. Installation commissions include Plimsoll Productions, Tokyo World and Awesome Events. In May 2021, her degree artworks won a window display space and funding at Weston-Super-Shop Windows, a community project organised by Weston Arts Space. In 2022 her community-centred artwork Flutter II for St. John’s Church, Highbridge, won a new artist bursary from Somerset Art Works. Sami continues to develop The Transformation Project, curating responses through artist collaboration for SAW Festival in September 2022. Sami used her degree studies as an opportunity to develop ideas about perception and experience within critical spatial practice. A development from events experience. Her July 2021 exhibition, Emergentism, experimented with the sensory and intellectual processes that help us understand the world around us. Taking inspiration from nature, her unusual, abstract, material, and process-driven forms offered participants immersive, light and sound experiences through colour and frequency. In 2022, ideas led by research into art education practices and the benefits of art and culture to the wellbeing of a community have become central to development. Sami has worked with the community to develop a socially engaged artwork, exploring the collective potential and the possibilities in collaboration. She is working with cross-disciplinary performers and makers to promote a four-dimensional approach to experience through sculptural installation, sound, performance, and workshops. Exploring the multi-sensory in terms of perception and experience formed the backbone of recent experimentation. My research paper into the practices of Olafur Eliasson underpins these ideas,

Lorna Scott Fitness

lorna scott fitness

I have been teaching exercise for 25 years and thrive on working with my clients to achieve their health and fitness goals! I live and work in Potters bar, Hertfordshire and had been teaching exercise and fitness classes at venues in Potters Bar, Barnet and North London until the recent Covid-19 pandemic restricted group exercise (amongst so many other things!) In the early days of "lockdown" I kept in touch with my wonderful clients with regular video blogs and 5 minute daily exercise challenges. When it became clear that the restrictions were likely to be in place for many months, I started organising live streamed classes via Zoom. This new way of exercising remotely has been hugely popular with my members and has influenced the way I hope to take the classes forward. I am very aware of the impact on us all during such unsettled times and I firmly believe in the importance of nurturing both physical and mental health. Taking time to look after ourselves is more important than ever. I pride myself on making all of my members feel valued and adapting my style to meet their needs. Most of all, I believe that exercise should be enjoyable and I endeavour to bring fun to all of my classes! My Background In 1996 I bought a Rosemary Conley Diet & Fitness franchise and worked hard to build a successful group of classes in my local area, which many of my current members attended! The exercise and nutritional training that I received from Rosemary Conley was invaluable and has been the foundation for my career in the industry. In 2004, I launched "Health for Life", my own diet and fitness programme, with classes in Barnet and Potters Bar and qualified as a Zumba instructor in 2010 to revitalise the classes. Having discovered the benefits of Pilates, following a significant back injury, I decided to qualify as a Fitness Pilates teacher. The addition of Fitness Pilates to the classes I teach has provided my members with an alternative way to exercise, that focuses on physical and mental health and wellbeing. As the modern world becomes ever more challenging, the popularity of Fitness Pilates has grown and is now the basis for the majority of my classes. In addition, I am qualified to teach exercise to children, and also teach Exercise for Older Adults at a number of retirement communities in my local area. As Charles Darwin said, “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change.”

Tarn is Grade 7: the highest grade achievable in UK. Tarn has competed at two UKA National Finals and Jackie has also competed at a KC ABC (anything but a collie) National Final with her crossbreed, Zeus, many years ago now! She is also bringing on a youngster, due to start competing in Grade 2 shortly. Terry competes with Exe in Grade 4. Both Jackie and Terry have been Agility Judges. Jackie is also a Scentwork UK Judge and Trial Manager, currently working Tarn at Level 5 and Dart at Level 2 in this discipline. Arena We are lucky enough to have the use of an excellent training venue in Shortlanesend. Access is really easy and only takes a few minutes from Truro in the south or the A30 in the north. The venue offers hard-standing for parking and a really large outdoor school. We are told it is 25 x 45 m but it seems even bigger! The surface is a sand and felt mix and stands up very well to all types of weather! TRAINING … Anne and Enid’s lovely dogs at training From different lives and different places We bring different worries and different faces Hard workers and carers, all with jobs to do We converge to one place, one field, one view Bring with us such baggage, crates full of stress Left by the gate, to delight in much less A mismatch of strangers joined now as friends A shared goal and dream, our pathways all blend Dogs at our sides, our hearts filled with joy The world shut out with the first throw of a toy Two hours of US! My identity now found Cheering and laughing at just one turn round A brief moment of calm in the storm of the week A haven, a sanctuary that we all seek Agility just a sport ? A hobby maybe? For us it’s much more, for me – sanity.

Vg Training & Consultancy

vg training & consultancy

London

VG Training was created and is led by Director, Vicki Gwynne, who lives locally with her partner (Nick) daughter (Jess) and their slightly unsociable rabbit (Speedy). She has worked across Stoke on Trent in a variety of roles over the years, has a vocational background in education, psychology, support for adults and young people with multiple needs, and is a qualified teacher and trainer. Vicki is passionate about Stoke on Trent and Staffordshire – the area, the people, and the skills and experience within it. VG Training was created after she realised how many local companies paid for out of area ‘experts’ and ‘specialists’ to train their staff and provide advice… paying high travel and accommodation costs, big city prices, and having to explain local history and requirements as the ‘experts’ didn’t understand the local dynamics. Vicki knew colleagues and other local trainers who had similar qualifications and experience and the ability to deliver good quality learning or advice, so built up a fantastic, local team of specialist trainers and consultants to deliver a variety of training courses, learning experiences and consultations at affordable prices! Vicki is proud of the quality of training delivered through the company, “All trainers have dual specialism – experts in the subject matter (either through qualifications or experience) and have a training or teaching qualification which helps to plan learning objectives, create appropriate resources and keep learning active. Because we are local, understand the different sectors, and can relate to the attendees, our training and consultancy services remain current, of interest and with practical examples provided.” When she’s not working, researching new theories or checking legislation and good practice is current for VG Training, Vicki is either ‘playing taxi’ to her daughter and friends, reading an excessive amount of books (she’s on her 3rd full kindle!) or carrying out one of her many voluntary roles. She further shows her commitment to the local area and residents by being a Trustee of a local young person’s charity, Member of Staffordshire & Stoke on Trent Adult Safeguarding Partnership (Prevention & Engagement), Panel Member of Stoke North Safer Neighbourhood Panel (PCC), and active as representative of her local residents’ association. Vicki leads a busy life! “I love the work I do as well as the voluntary roles I perform… it feels like I’m part of something bigger, and it’s great meeting new people and hearing their life stories. At VG Training, we put 100% into everything we do, and look forward to continuing our work across the area!”
