Since opening, the College has been a popular choice for students and has continued to expand. There are approximately 2000 students on roll with a significant proportion travelling to Darlington from County Durham, Teesside and North Yorkshire. Chrysalis Craft Coventry CIC was founded in March 2020 in response to the urgent unmet needs of BAME and migrant communities who were disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The lockdown has challenged the mental health and wellbeing of everyone, more so for asylum seekers, refugees and migrants in our communities. Many have experienced unimaginable trauma and have seen major disruptions in their life already. The pandemic has amplified further the existing mental health problems. Often left in limbo, not able to take on higher education studies and not allowed to work (with many refugees under or unemployed) and likely to face loneliness or worse, direct discrimination, within their new communities. Chrysalis Craft Coventry CIC run sessions and activities to help with healing, using art and different artistic methods for wellbeing. The aim is to build self-esteem and friendship through artistic techniques, using art to work against loneliness as a result of language, cultural and ability barriers. The social enterprise supports people from a variety of different backgrounds, focussing on disadvantaged adult women immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers. Focusing on women who came to Coventry and the surrounding area recently, and those who have been here for a long time, but who have experienced barriers to integration. Local authority, NHS and charities working with migrants’ commission and refer people onto in-person and online workshops. Grant funding supports materials and content development. Over the short period of the start-up, Chrysalis Craft Coventry CIC supported thousands of individuals suffering from loneliness, domestic abuse, stress, anxiety, depression, homesickness and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder because of life experiences with positive results. During the pandemic the workshops have proven invaluable, acting as a safe environment and an information and signposting service. Directing people to urgently needed services they could not reach due to language barrier or stigma caused by misinformation.

I work with natural elements to record places and periods of time, mainly using plants and their naturally occurring dyes. After a rural upbringing I moved to London in 2000 and have lived and worked here since. I graduated with a degree in Fine Art from Goldsmiths College in 2003 and recently completed the Artist Teacher Scheme at Oxford Brookes University with distinction. I am currently working as a freelance artist and teacher having previously taught art and photography in mainstream education for over a decade, becoming a head of department before deciding to concentrate on my own artistic practice after giving birth to my son. I continue my love of teaching by delivering workshops and courses. My current practice explores the change and growth of plants in my garden and other places which have significance to me. I work with time-based processes and alternative printmaking techniques, using pigments in plant dyes and rust, to record periods in time or the status of plants at a particular moment. I am interested in the unpredictability of these processes and the effects that they have both on the plants used to create them and the environment they are created in. I am currently investigating how nature can be used to record periods of time by creating work in the environment, documenting the effects of natural elements such as rain. I have work in private and public collections internationally and have exhibited nationally including at the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair for the past three years. I completed a residency in 2018 as part of the New: Defence arts project in Essex which culminated in a solo exhibition of the work I created.

For Every Cloud was established by Donna Vale in 2013, a creative venue based in Langport, a small town in the heart of the Somerset levels. Having graduated with a first class honors degree in art and textiles I wanted to create a space where people can learn, have fun, relax and make friends, this is really important but I also wanted an environment where visitors wouldn’t feel overwhelmed. My business mission statement ‘where friendship and creativity meet’ sums up the ethos of what we do at For Every Cloud. A shop and gallery stocking local art and craft features alongside my own. Workshops are held in the gallery space and studio, which is also used to teach screen printing. Both spaces can be hired by tutors and artists alike utilising their skills to teach popular classes such as needle felting. The workshop list is varied and attracts people from as far as London, France and Denmark who come with friends and family to stay in this beautiful part of the country, booking days to make and take… and of course have tea and cake. From experimental textiles to bookbinding, etching with Perspex to calligraphy, there is something here for everyone. I work alongside local B&B’s and cafes to provide an all round experience, offering bespoke events for hen parties, corporate functions and children’s birthdays and more recently, a summer school for adults. As well as workshops I create bespoke calligraphy and stationery for weddings, sublimation printing for personalised gifts. A signmaking service is also available for all your business and personal needs. Whether you need a new shop front or graphics for your vehicle, we are happy to help with the design and installation.

The Giant stands watch over acres of undulating hills and fertile , water-fed, green valleys. No one knows how old he is. He has defied archaeology, and in the end it comes down to which sorts of evidence one places one’s faith in … although the consensus is that he was put there as some sort of message. Those who place their faith in the written word point out that the first (surviving) written evidence of the Giant is in the Churchwardens’ accounts of 1694 (“for repairing ye Giant, 3 shillings”). They favour the theory that he was created as a political lampoon of Cromwell by Denzel Holles, who owned the land at the time. Others note the Giant’s similarity to Hercules and imagine Roman soldiers creating him as a statement, perhaps in a similar way to how regimental badges were created on Salisbury Plain during WW1. If you talk to those who’ve lived here for generations – who remember running around his outline as a child or playing a sort of hopscotch between the parts of his tackle, he is prehistoric. More recently Peter Knight has examined archaeoastronomical alignments and came to the conclusion he is Iron Age, created not long before the Roman invasion.

We aim to provide a relaxed atmosphere, where people can meet, learn about gardening, share information, get creative - and have fun!Over the past year we have continued to teach on-line, through Zoom, which has kept us in contact with many garden enthusiasts, but we have missed face-to-face teaching very much. One advantage however has been reaching those far and wide who can’t come to the Garden House in person, a rather wonderful silver lining! Sadly our travel plans were put on hold, as were many events and workshops, but we are now busy reinstating our programme lining up new workshops and courses once the restrictions allow.
