Helping the children of travelling salespeopleI feel that it is a great honour to have been elected Chairman of our Foundation, and I trust that we shall continue to be effective in providing educational support for children of travelling sales people during times of adversity. Many years ago, when I was experiencing a tricky time with my career, I was fortunate to receive a series of grants primarily to assist my youngest daughter, Claire, with her education and specialist swimming training. Royal Pinner’s assistance, at a crucial stage of Claire’s education, was invaluable. Claire went on to graduate from Leeds University as well as to participate in the Paralympic Games held in Athens, Beijing, London and Rio – where she won a Gold Medal. Obviously, our Royal Pinner grants were withdrawn when Lottery funding became available, but we shall be forever grateful for the support we received at a critical stage of Claire’s development. Being in receipt of support is one side of the Trust and, since becoming a Trustee several years ago, I have also seen the other side – helping to alleviate the hardships encountered by our beneficiaries and new applicants – and I have felt very humbled. Most of our families face and endure far more difficult circumstances than I did, but, on the other hand, I have also seen how effective our grants and pastoral support can be. Our focus remains on the sons and daughters of commercial travellers where there is also a specific need or hardship, and we aim to continue to provide effective educational support during the years to come.

The Foundation was started in 1989 with a generous donation from Mrs Lucille Driscoll in memory of her late husband Sydney, who had been treated in the Department of Neuroscience at Preston in the 1960s by the first neurosurgeon at Preston; the late Mr Ken Tutton. She was delighted with the idea that the money which she had donated would be used to enhance neuroscience education and research. A Trust Fund was established as a registered charity and is administered by the Trustees who meet regularly. The late Mr Ken Tutton was one of the founder members of the Trust. Aims and objectives of the Trust. The aim is to build upon the Department’s reputation as a centre of excellence in the field of neuroscience, by continuing to develop and expand the facilities for education, training and research. These aims and objectives include a Neuroscience Library, an Annual Neuroscience Lecture, an Annual Neuroscience Award, support for Conference and Training Courses and funding for relevant Clinical or Laboratory Research.

Our mission is to provide outstanding education to orphaned and vulnerable children affected by HIV in Kenya, pulling them out of poverty and the worst start in life, to empower and give them a future through education. Without our help many of these children might not be able to attend school at all. We need your help to fund our schools in the Nyumbani Village, a community established to serve 1,000 orphaned children, many of whom are affected by HIV. Help us to support the next potential doctor, lawyer, or writer and sustain better futures for those who have been abandoned. Our work goes beyond the Nyumbani village, we also run a scholarship programme for some of the most destitute HIV positive children living in the informal settlements around Nairobi and the Nyumbani children's home.
