As a recruiter with over 20 years of experience in the field of data science and analytics, Roisin McCarthy observed a worrying decline in female candidates applying to roles across every level. The gap in female applicants led her to examine the underlying causes and barriers to women in the data and analytics industries. What she found led her to collaborate with Britain’s foremost analytics expert, Payal Jain and together, Women in Data was formed to confront this startling problem and to agitate for change. Women in Data® aims to bring awareness through media appearances and events; in particular, the landmark annual Women in Data® conference. This began as an understated symposium, attended by 100 people in 2015 and it erupted into the most highly anticipated annual data science event in the UK. At the 2019 conference at the Arora O2 Women in Data welcomed more than 1500 attendees, and in 2020 thousands of data professionals attended a week of online Women in Data events and workshops. The message of diversity and equality is permeating into the data zeitgeist with each Women in Data® event we run. From the classrooms of Milton Keynes to the House of Lords, we have been working tirelessly to raise awareness of the issues and emphasise the value of female participation at every level. We collaborate with our corporate partners to stage regular Women in Data networking events throughout the year, providing opportunities for leaders in the field (mostly women) to share their knowledge and experiences via informative presentations and discussions. We intend to emphasise and celebrate the accomplishments of women because ‘you can’t be what you can’t see’. All Women in Data events are for women at every stage of their careers to connect with one another in a safe and stimulating environment. The demand for data science to become more inclusive and representative is growing, as evident in the generous support of our corporate partners, whose contributions enable us to run these events for free. M.O.P. FORMATION As you begin the journey of discerning your vocation, be assured that you are not left to yourself. The Missionaries of the Poor provides a comprehensive formation program that includes the opportunity to experience the life of brotherhood, a rigorous theological and spiritual training program and years of hands-on experience in our work. This formation consists of five stages: 1. Aspirancy (6 months to 1 year): New vocations begin with one year of introduction to the life and work of the Missionaries of the Poor. This period of formation takes place at the MOP mission in your home country. The goal of this period is simply to assist you in discerning whether God is calling you to serve Him with us. 2. Postulancy (6 months): Formation continues as you continue to test your vocation to religious life. If you grow in your conviction that the religious life is in fact God’s will for you, postulancy ends and you remove to the Institute’s headquarters in Kingston, Jamaica to continue formation. 3. Novitiate (2 years): The first year (canonical) of the Novitiate emphasizes prayer and contemplation and includes a 40 day retreat. The second year (apostolical) emphasizes the work or apostolate of the Missionaries of the Poor. 4. Juniorate (6 years): At the end of the Novitiate, temporary vows of six years is made. During these three years, brothers in formation continue to grow in the knowledge of the mission and works of the Institute. 5. Seniorate (life): With the approval of the Institute, brothers in formation may be admitted to perpetual profession, that is, vows for lifetime service. DID YOU KNOW? My name is Andrew Okaro, I’m a therapist and coach who specializes in relationships, inner child therapy and career transformation. I’m passionate about helping others to achieve their goals and to reach their full potential. I’ve been interested in self-development ever since I learnt how to read, and was able to borrow books from my local library. However, my 1st career was working as a Graphics Designer, which lead to further work in world of advertising. In my 20’s I had my dream job, and a flat in central London, all the things I wanted to have growing up as a teenager. However, I struggled with relationships and found myself repeatedly disappointment in matters of love and the heart. At the same time, I became interested in psychology, in particular the works of Carl Jung, and Freud. What fascinated me, was the idea that your childhood experiences and the relationships with your parents, are key factors in shaping your life as an adult. I also became interested in the world of spirituality and was naturally drawn to Toaism and Shamanism. I studied various universal laws such as 'the law of polarity' ‘the law of resonance’ and ‘the law of attraction.’ But not from the superficial view often portrayed in documentaries like ‘The secret’. I was more interested in the workings of the unconscious mind, and how attraction is often influenced by, archetypes, inner parts and shadow aspects of the psyche. I started to see how the relationship with my mother fitted the pattern of my early relationships. But knowledge alone, was not enough to transform this, and I realized that I had to dig deeper in order to experience transformation. After a particularly bad breakup, I became aware of healing power of EFT (emotional freedom technique) and NLP (neuro linguistic programming). While practicing these for some time I became aware of several shifts which manifested as synchronicities in my life. Some of these were subtle, while others were blatantly obvious, like two ex’s contacting me within a space of a couple days.

Being Swedish in origin I feel very strongly that our wellbeing and happiness should be more prominent in our way of life and the concept of Lagom, which means ‘just about right, not too much or too little’ is a key concept to Swedish people. This balance between work and pleasure is perhaps more clearly articulated in Scandinavia and sits well together with the key foundation of the Positive Psychology movement. After my initial Psychology degree I worked in the Further Education Sector and I still have a particular interest in adolescents and in Post 16 work. I did my Educational Psychology training at the Tavistock Clinic in London in the mid 90s, and I had a good grounding in Attachment and Resilience based frameworks as well as Family Therapy. Over the years, I have also specialised in specific learning difficulties as well as more recently in Positive Psychology with a particular interest in Coaching Psychology. Over the last year I have received Positive Psychology Coaching from one of Britain’s most well established Positive Psychologists, Miriam Akhtar. Being on the receiving end of good coaching has given me a personal insight into its transformational powers. Having been an educational psychologist for over 20 years in a number of different settings, including both Local Authorities and the Independent Sector, as well as assessments for students in Higher Education, I came across Positive Psychology when experiencing personal and health changes in my own life. I applied a number of Positive Psychology strategies such as The Keys To Happier Living, (See Action for Happiness below) and I learnt to keep my attention and focus in the right place in order to promote wellbeing. I learnt what my Character Strengths were which enabled me to see myself in a different light. I feel strongly that everybody would benefit from knowledge of these principles. I am therefore keen to provide Positive Psychology training and insights to individuals, families and schools.
