Signalong The Communication Charity (1039788) provides resources, training and free advice, and readily works with others in the field to promote communication skills for children and adults with speech, language and communication needs and English as an additional language. Signalong was founded in 1992 at a Kent special school and now provides resources and training throughout the United Kingdom, Europe and Asia. A central tenet of Signalong is “one concept per sign, one sign per concept” which is different to other British Sign Language based systems, which require an understanding of the context in order to distinguish meaning. People who have learning difficulties, especially those with Autism, may find it difficult to differentiate the context. Signalong has researched and published the widest range of signs in Britain. These are drawn and described following a consistent method that enables users to access vocabulary according to need. Resources published by the charity cater for a range of ages and ability from pre-school and pre-language up to preparation for employment.

We are a bespoke Training Centre for students aged 16-19 with Special Educational Needs. The students will have an emotional, behavioural or complex cognitive need which will be reflected in their Educational Health and Care Plans. Our school will aim to admit up to 25 students each academic year. Each student will stay with us for a minimum of two full academic years. Our centre is a specialist provider with a focus on preparing the students for the world of work. The curriculum reflects this ethos and the students can select from a range of practical courses designed to reflect current job market trends. All of the students are expected to continue with studying English and Maths as well as developing their interpersonal, social and communication skills through Personal Development and Employability qualifications. Our aim is that by the time each student leaves that they are able to function in a work environment or that they are able to further their skills through further education or training courses.

History The word Ngorli ((ŋgↄli)) originates from the Ewe language spoken in Ghana, Togo and Benin; it means there is hope for the future. Ngorli is a Community Interest Company set up by Rhoda Amezado in 2017 to support children and families in the Watford community. This is achieved through an educational program which takes place every Friday afternoon and Saturday morning at the Christ Church on St Albans Road. The focus of the program is to provide extra support to children requiring more educational input, with the aim of increasing their confidence and consequently their opportunities moving forward. For many of the families, English is their second language, and they may have moved to England in recent years; at Ngorli Community Interest Company, we offer the families and their children assistance in understanding the educational system and help with signposting them to other relevant support within the community. Alison Philipson worked in advertising for several years before training to be a teacher, which she enjoyed for a decade, becoming the English Leader in the school and also a leading Literacy Teacher in Bradford. Following this, for several years, she led the local authority’s Literacy Team and then took on the role of KS1 and KS2 Assessment Lead before setting up her own business, Alison Philipson Literacy Ltd.
