The team at Blade Education highly values lived experience as a central part of any successful project. We believe that the answers to many issues begin with valuing what members of any community can tell us about what they need for a successful outcome. Wherever possible, we hold lessons, sessions, and events outside. All ages and all kinds of people get involved in Blade Education projects. People have volunteered for us from the age of 8 to 103. From HMS Leigh, a community led heritage and arts project that connected people of all ages with the history of Southend Pier, also known as HMS Leigh, during WW2. Supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Arts Council and Southend Borough Council, this project was created as part of the VE 75 celebrations in 2020 and survived to be one of the first post pandemic lockdown in person events in September 2021. Our latest project, Southend Safer Care Leavers has developed a free online information service for young people supporting the knowledge already given and ensuring they are ready to take charge of their own health care. Thanks to all our supporters and volunteers from a wide range of organisations and funders, Blade Education for nearly two decades has been able to offer wonderful learning experiences to thousands of children, families, and the general public. Basically, this means that some of the poorest farming communities in the world will be able to set up their own ‘Farmers’ Voice Radio Stations’ – using the free resources and help that we’ll be able to provide! As a small charity, we don’t believe in feathering our own nest. And we do believe that all our learning and the resources that we have created through our ground-breaking programme should get to those who need it the most. At no cost to them. Business development and IP support in Greater ManchesterManchester has a long history of supporting enterprise and innovation. In 1919 the Commercial Library opened in Manchester’s Royal Exchange, providing free access to the region’s businesses and residents to information about trade and industry. The Commercial Library operated in Central Library until the re-opening of the building in 2014, when it became the Business & IP Centre Manchester. In March last year the Government announced plans to invest £13m over three years to expand and build on the success of the Business & IP Centre network, headquartered at the British Library. This major investment has enabled the British Library to widen its support network to local entrepreneurs in towns and cities across the country via a hub and spoke model centred on the 15 existing Centres across the country. Our plans are ambitious, encompassing seven neighbouring authorities, plus Lancaster and Blackpool. Our existing partnerships with many of the libraries gave us a good starting point – well established links via the long standing Ask About Business collaboration, providing information, workshops and support for startups, businesses and inventors. However the new regional expansion will also include Lancaster Library, who weren’t previously involved and have extended our geographical reach even further up the north west coastline! What does the BIPC expansion bring? Firstly there are new branded spoke BIPC’s in specific spaces within Altrincham, Ashton, Blackpool, Bolton, Bury, Lancaster, Oldham, Eccles and Stockport Libraries.

I am a Devon based textile artist creating contemporary textile art inspired by the coast and countryside. With no formal training I took up free motion machine embroidery in 2012 and over time I have gravitated towards textile art, developing my own unique style by using organza and net to give a soft watercolour feel to my work. Working loosely from photographs, but often directly from my imagination, each piece of my work evolves as it is created. I prefer not to use a sketchbook, instead allowing my creativity to guide me as each piece develops. Colour and texture are big influences for me and where possible I prefers to source up cycled textiles for their variety and individuality. I love the idea that these materials can be given a new purpose, and can be appreciated in a totally different way for many more years to come. As well as my original artwork my range also includes digital and giclee fine art prints, greeting cards and textile art kits, all of which can be found in my Etsy shop https://www.etsy.com/shop/AlisonWhateley?ref=hdr_shop_menu I also welcome commissions of all sizes, and will work with you to get the result you are looking for.
