The Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe (or RGS for short) is a selective day and boarding grammar school for boys aged 11-18 situated in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. We became an Academy in February 2011. As a state school we do not charge fees for day students to attend, but they must pass an entrance exam, the Buckinghamshire Grammar Schools Secondary Transfer Test (known colloquially as the 11+). Fees apply for boarding, although the education remains state-funded. Our facilities are exceptional and the Oxbridge entry is in the vanguard of the state sector. For the last twenty years, the school has produced top class exam results, both at GCSE and A-level, surpassing many of its fee-paying competitors.

I’m Matthew and I’ve been helping my students succeed at school and university since 1992, including over 13,000 hours of one-to-one tuition to over 400 students. My philosophy is: more than higher grades. I teach A level Maths and Further Maths, A level Statistics, and A level Physics. At GCSE level I have worked very successfully with students aiming for a grade 6 and above. I also help undergraduates on courses with mathematical content, such as Economics and Business Studies. My focus is on achieving high grades through understanding the material. I tailor my approach depending on individual needs and interests and I believe in making the subject as simple and enjoyable as possible. I am enthusiastic, friendly and approachable. I really want my students to succeed and I’m very happy to be contacted for help outside of their lesson time. I was recently invited by Talksport Radio to be their “maths expert” to speak on the topic of coin tossing, in the context of determining who bats first in a cricket match. You can read a fuller version of what I said here. UCAS + OXBRIDGE ADVICE It is not enough simply to do well at A level, of course: students need to be given the tools to succeed at university. To that end I take a very full interest in their education generally. As one student recently put it, I am “so much more than just a maths tutor”. For example I give guidance and support with university entrance, including the UCAS personal statement, applying to Oxford and Cambridge, and interview preparation, and I have personal experience of working in both the legal and accounting professions. I’ve written a detailed guide for university applicants: Writing your UCAS personal statement. ACADEMIC HISTORY + TEACHING EXPERIENCE I have an outstanding academic record and over twenty-five years experience as a teacher and examiner, during which I’ve received excellent feedback from my students and their parents. I have tutored over 400 students in Harrogate: that’s over 13,000 hours of one-to-one teaching since I started tutoring in 2006. FEES My fees are £220 per month, which covers four one-hour lessons and ongoing continuous support and help outside of lesson time. I do whatever I can to help my students succeed: I’ve even answered messages from a frantic student at midnight, and I’m always happy to talk to parents and guardians. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Because I tutor full-time, I only teach from my home on Victoria Avenue, in central Harrogate, and online. I teach on weekdays from 4pm to 9pm. I am a level 3 Forest School leader and I have over 15 years’ experience working with children. As well as working in a school and at holiday camps I also have experience taking group trips abroad and has run Wonderwoods Sister company Buttons Parties for 7 years. I started Wonderwood so I could offer the wonder of playing outside surrounded by nature to as many children as possible. It’s the days spent outside climbing trees, getting muddy and making things, that I remember most vividly and fondly from my childhood and the memories I wants to help create for her two year old daughter and other children. I run the forest school clubs with my amazing mum Jill. She is an ex primary school teacher and head. With my back ground in play and forest school and hers in education, outdoor studies and learning we make quite a dream team. Our Tuesday little explorers club is quite the family affair as my husband Mark also brings Neive our daughters along so we are all in the woods having fun. Forest School offers an inspirational environment for children to develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a natural environment. At FS I encourage the children to explore with in the set boundaries and take appropriate risks, also understand that each child is an individual and so guided by their interests we ensure we facilitate their continued learning and provide the support and resources they need.

We support parents with aspirations for their teenagers – those who want to gain admission to top universities. We help to improve Exam Grades in Core Academic subjects at GCSE and A-level. On average, our students are performing at around a B grade in school before they join us; within a year, they improve by about two grade points. Our main programmes are: Saturday School during term time and Intensive Revision during school holidays. We also have flexible unit-based learning and the premium Consultation Tuition (one-to-one by a top consultant teacher). At the start of the pandemic, we temporarily moved online but we have now opened our centres again for in-person teaching; however, we still run separate online lessons for those who prefers online. Our centres are now open for in-person teaching at: St James School, Kensington Olympia and Trinity School in East Croydon*. We cover the core academic subjects of Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English at both GCSE and A-level. In addition to all the above, we also provide for Further Maths, Economics, History and Psychology at A-level. At GCSE, we cover Further Maths and all the science options – Triple and Combined (double or trilogy) Our teachers are of the highest quality and we have a proven track record for over 16 years. Excel in Key Subjects consists of a group of fully qualified and highly experienced secondary school teachers. Some teach in the Independent and some in the State sector. Our main objective is to help improve grades. We provide classes in small groups for students aged 13 to 19 on Saturdays. We also have a Revision programmes during School holidays.
