St Benedict's is a comprehensive secondary school of about 740 boys and girls aged from 11 to 18 years. The school serves the Catholic communities of West Suffolk and Thetford and gives priority for admissions to children who are baptised Catholics, but has always welcomed others who wish to gain from and participate in the Christian life of the school. St. Benedict’s is situated on the outskirts of Bury St Edmunds and is readily accessible by car or public transport. The school has six acres of playing fields and the accommodation is spacious and under constant improvement. There are specialist suites for all subject departments. The School Library has been transformed into a Learning Resource Centre with the addition of a suite of computers. In addition to the Learning Resource Centre, there are 5 more dedicated Computer suites, making St. Benedict’s one of the best-equipped schools for ICT in the area. Remodelling the School Hall enhances our facilities for Sport, Drama and Worship, as does the addition of a Fitness Studio to enhance sport and promote healthy lifestyles. Special Needs provision is excellent, and based in a new Learning Support area. Recent extensions and improvements have included an All-weather surface for tennis, hockey, netball and 5-a-side football, an additional science room, and the new classroom block which serves as a base for year 7 and 8. Art, Drama and Music flourish and, in spite of the schools relatively small size, success on the games field is notable.

Beccles

Sir John Leman was a Suffolk man who went to London in the 1580s and made his fortune by dealing in dairy products. He became a leading citizen of London during the reigns of Queen Elizabeth I and King James I, serving as Sheriff of London and later as Lord Mayor. He retained strong links with Beccles and, upon his death in 1631, he left a bequest to educate forty four students from Beccles, two from Ringsfield and two from Gillingham. Sir John Leman High School was established in 1632 at Leman House in Ballygate, a Seventeenth Century Grade 1 listed building which now houses the Beccles Museum. The wall of Leman House still bears the motto: ’Disce aut Discede’ (roughly translated as ’learn or go’). The school became the County Mixed Grammar School and moved to our present site in Ringsfield Road in 1914. The original school building still sits at the heart of the site, surrounded by the additional buildings and facilities which have been constructed and developed as the school has grown. In 1971, we became a Comprehensive High School and we converted to Academy status in August 2011. In 2014, an exciting major refurbishment programme was undertaken to welcome Year 7 and 8 students back to the site following the return in 2012 to a two tier education system and to ensure that our school continues to offer excellent facilities for many years to come. This included the creation of our Centenary Courtyard, a fitting celebration of 100 years of school life at Ringsfield Road. Sir John Leman High School has produced many generations of well-educated young people. A number of highly successful people have attended the school including Professor Dorothy Crowfoot-Hodgkin (Nobel Prize Winner), Sir John Mills (Actor) and Sir Stanley Rous (former FIFA President).

I live is a lovely Leicestershire village with my three grandchildren and two cats. Life is constantly busy, but every available moment I have you will find me at my desk designing and making, or in my workshop adding the finishing touches to a piece. I love working with glass. It is a medium with endless possibilities, it is unpredictable, sometimes difficult to control but when it works it is just beautiful. I have been working with glass for over five years. If you look at my work it is clear to see that I am inspired by nature, the sea, flora, trees, landscapes, and I bring elements of all of these into my work. I am lucky that I have been able to spend time learning from some inspirational UK glass artists, Claire Hall in Somerset, Laura Hart in Suffolk and Roberta Ayles in Devon. All have passed on different and varied skills that have helped me progress as a glass artist. My signature pieces are my fairy pictures. Each one is individual, each one has a link to nature. Most of these are now commissions and I am always overjoyed when I get asked to make a fairy picture. This year I am beginning to discover other materials to work with including silver clay and enamel on copper. The future may involve me exploring ways of combining the different materials to see what can be produced and achieved. Due to a variety of reasons I have come to art later in life, but in retrospect this is the right time for me, what I do makes me happy, I know I am very lucky to be able to say that. Bramfield House School was established in 1970 as a specialist provision for pupils with social, emotional, mental health, communication difficulties and associated challenging behaviours. It is an all boys establishment catering for an age range of 7-16 and is registered for 74 pupils. It is situated in rural Suffolk 10 minutes drive from the heritage coast. The residential accommodation consists of the main house sitting in 10 acres of gardens and 1 mile from the centre of the village of Bramfield. The classroom facilities are independently placed within the grounds and consist of purpose made specialist subject provisions. Alongside the school site we provide a separate residential accommodation called Ibstock House that caters for the further development of pupil’s independence skills. This house has its own designated classroom and gardens, approximately ¾ of an acre and can support up to 6 boarding pupils. Both can access the numerous on-site resources on offer, including an indoor heated swimming pool, gymnasium, multi-gym, pool tables and table tennis table, full size sports pitches and outdoor adventure trail, amongst a host of other in- house activities and interests. The ethos of the school is based on trust and mutual respect, providing the opportunity for every individual to maximise their own potential in a warm and caring environment. The pupils are supported in discovering their personal attributes, and to then themselves acknowledge these skills, building their confidence and self-esteem so that this can then be transferred and used to develop and enhance all areas of their social and educational development.
