How it Started After running successful businesses in the food and beauty industries, we met over our love for food and helping the community. Gurdip was introduced to veganism by her son who became vegan at 17, over 10 years ago. Embarking on this new adventure felt overwhelming yet restricting as to what to make at mealtimes that would please the whole family. Jenny & Gurdip-min Jenny trained at some of the country’s top eating establishments and has cooked for royalty and A-list celebrities alike. Gurdip turned to her friend Jenny for some advice and support. With Jenny’s expertise, guidance and amazingly tasty recipes, Gurdip was able to navigate around this new realm, find delicious recipes for the whole family and, more importantly, find a love for cooking she’d never had before. Jenny enjoyed it so much that she changed to a vegan way of life over 5 years ago. First and foremost we are women in our 40s who want to look after ourselves and our families. We also want to dispel the myth that vegan food is boring and complicated – in fact, far from it. Siawns Teg

siawns teg

London

Siawns Teg is a social inclusion charity that works in the community of Powys to break down the problems and issues surrounding unemployment, personal learning opportunities and health. Siawns Teg has a highly motivated and experienced team of Trainers and mentors and is connected to a number of other local support groups with similar ideals. We are well known locally and internationally for our innovative and effective ways of engaging people in their own destiny and opportunity. We challenge two misconceptions: 1. Some service providers say that “people with problems are hard to reach”. We say that people with problems often don’t have the resources to travel and research what services are available. The problem is that people find services hard to reach. We believe that service providers should be working to break down barriers of access for people they aim to support, not the other way round. 2. Some funders provide money for organisations like Siawns Teg based on the numbers of people who will benefit. In Powys numbers are much less than in urban populations, and so outcomes for funders are not so exciting. We believe that the problems facing people in rural areas are just as difficult as for those people in urban cities, and that rural communities should have the same opportunities. What we do Siawns Teg takes pride in helping people to help themselves. We do this impartially and without discrimination, regardless of what situation, difficulty or problem comes through our door. We provide a holistic approach, working with individuals either alone or in groups to look at problems and planning solutions. We are good at supporting people to fit in with their community at work and play. We see it as a community effort, that is not only a problem for the individual, but one for the community as well to help address. That’s not to say that individuals can dodge the responsibility, each person is motivated to see what they can do and to own their progress. We run local courses and mentoring for individuals that guide people to realise their worth to themselves and the community. The course are tailor made and can cover anything from giving people confidence to attend a course to starting their own business. Some courses carry a recognised qualification! Our style of support is unique and proven with partner organisations in Europe. We have a high success rate of engaging with the unengaged, and getting people into work.

The Family Foraging Kitchen C.I.C.

Millbrook

Foraging walks and heritage craft courses.FORAGING IS ABOUT MORE THAN SOURCING FOOD AND NOURISHMENT. The Family Foraging Kitchen is a social enterprise dedicated to tackling local food poverty by providing quality and affordable wild food education to the people of Cornwall. As a C.I.C, a percentage of the profit made from our ticketed courses allows us to provide the same educational opportunities to those experiencing food poverty and/or social isolation for free. We believe that all people should have access to wild food education, as well as the confidence to access nutritious, sustainable, local, fresh food. For every walk or course you purchase from The Family Foraging Kitchen – you help to provide a local family the skills to find free food forever. Modern agricultural methods have meant that foraging, once a part of our ancestral daily life, has faded away, replaced by regular family trips to the supermarket. We are becoming more disconnected from the food that we eat. Given the ecological, social, and environmental crises that we now face globally, humanity needs to – rather urgently and radically – examine its relationship with food and how we acquire it. Additionally, we also feel that traditional skills and crafts are in danger of being lost, especially to our children, which is why we also work with a team of local artisans to offer courses that preserve ancestral heritage and traditional skills. Foraging is about more than sourcing food and nourishment. As an activity, it encourages us to get out into the countryside, helping us to cultivate an intimate appreciation of nature, while letting us better understand local history, science, and folklore. It has the potential to bond families, strengthen communities, and re-establish ecological connections severed by modern life. There is also a good deal of fear and misinformation surrounding the use and consumption of wild plants, and we believe that the best way to combat this is to share knowledge, helping communities to understand how their wild environments can be used for good. While our foraging walks, talks, and courses primarily take place across southeast Cornwall and Plymouth, we also have a fixed outdoor education centre for our skilled craft courses, which is based upon the Antony Estate in Sheviock. Here we have an outdoor classroom, covered outdoor work and cookery area, apiary, woodland, orchard, reservoir, and facilities, such a compost toilet – each established in line with our environmental and ethical policies. The facilities on site have been designed and built to accommodate for disabled accessibility. If you are interested in better understanding the environment, come to Cornwall and explore what we have on offer!

WE TEACH. Since January 2014, ReadAble has been running weekly reading and language arts classes for children ages 2 to 15 in a neighbourhood in the Chin Swee area. We started out teaching in children’s homes, but have grown to occupy classrooms in the Residents’ Committee Centre. We teach a phonics-based curriculum to our earliest readers and deliver a programme which complements the primary school syllabus for those who have mastered the basics of reading. We use drama, movement and play to draw out a love for reading, build self-confidence, and encourage creativity. WE BUILD. ReadAble has built a community library of over a thousand books for our kids to freely access books at every reading level throughout the week. We also organise educational excursions to plays and museums, as well as connect kids’ families with community resources, such as school supply donations and workshops by professional educators. Through our BookDrop project, we set up conducive study spaces and mini-libraries in kids’ homes. WE MENTOR. Apart from our classes every Saturday, some volunteers run one-on-one classes with children in their homes across the week forming deep relationships with families. We also started a class teaching the predominantly migrant mothers of our students, functional English to navigate life in Singapore. EVERY CHILD LOVED. We believe that children thrive in love. We are committed to forming lasting relationships with them as teachers and mentors. Each child’s progress is closely monitored and classes are tailored to meet their learning styles. We recognise that our children weather challenges such as parental incarceration or family violence, and we strive to support them. EVERY FAMILY PARTNERED. Family support is crucial to a child’s success. We work alongside families to reinforce children's learning at home. We seek to understand our children’s home life and we engage parents with routine updates on their children’s progress. EVERY VOLUNTEER EMPOWERED. ReadAble is entirely volunteer-led and run, and we are serious about equipping our people. We run regular training sessions on topics from phonics to classroom management and how toxic stress affects child development. We constantly refine our methods based on research and best practices. EVERYONE A COMMUNITY. We seek to build an inclusive community that encourages children's diverse aspirations and engages everyone with empathy. We have a flat volunteer structure led by our Co-founders and Core Team who form friendships with children and their families. Together, we work to eradicate social inequality.

Private support of the Air Force Academy provides so much more than a margin of excellence, a higher education phrase used to describe the role of private philanthropy. Your impact is, in fact, immeasurable. Our focus on “More than a Margin” is a celebration of the generous individuals who make our mission possible. It more adequately describes the true impact of private support. We believe strongly, as many do, that our Academy is a vital national resource — one that is deserving of our emotional and financial support. The Academy's mission is simply too important to leave to the vagaries of federal funding alone. As a result, the Air Force Academy Foundation (formerly the USAFA Endowment) will work actively to identify and to cultivate key relationships with current and potential Academy donors to support the superintendent's strategic priorities. We also believe that a foundation, singularly charged with the abiding stewardship of donated funds and constituted in such a way as to ensure the permanency and efficacy of the gift, is the most effective structure for providing this support to the Academy. As a result, the founders of the Air Force Academy Foundation chose to establish a new type of foundation and to memorialize a number of unique Founding Principles into the organizational bylaws. Founding Principles Our board of directors is stable and independent. The structure of the Air Force Academy Foundation is such that donors can have confidence that their gifts will be stewarded carefully and consistently over time by other donors. We are committed to a positive and supportive approach. The singular role of the Air Force Academy Foundation is to provide financial support for vital Academy programs. We will not make any public pronouncements on the policy decisions of the Academy or the Air Force. We are fully transparent. Our operations have complete audit and donor visibility annually. Annual reports are provided to each donor — both for the Air Force Academy Foundation as a whole, and for each donor's individual gift. Our Commitment to Donors We hold donor service first and foremost. We commit to integrity and transparency in all our dealings. We will recognize our donors' contributions while respecting donor-requested privacy. We seek perfection in every written communication and report we produce. We under-promise, over-prepare, and over-deliver. We get the job done regardless of who gets the credit. We welcome constructive criticism. We seek continuous improvement in every aspect of our operation. Cooperation and respect characterize our interactions with each other and the outside world. Quality preempts quantity. Execution supersedes intention.

Birmingham

I’m an artist based in Birmingham with a great love for all things creative. From a young age, creating has been therapeutic for me, giving an outlet and response to the changing world around me. In my late teens I took a traditional route studying Fine Art, going on to use my skills to support communities and people of all ages. This included working with play schemes and youth groups, bringing as many creative experiences as I could – despite incredibly low budgets! Over the years I developed a passion for mosaic and began to specialise in creating large scale mosaic installations, initially within educational and community environments. What I love about mosaic is its accessibility for all, and the collaboration and teamwork it brings. As a process I enjoy watching people’s confidence grow, the relationships built along the way and the pride shared in the finished product of a permanent installation on a wall or in the ground that the whole community can enjoy & share. I love that my work becomes part of a shared history for those that have worked on it, been part of the commissioning process and have inspired it. I consider myself a visual storyteller and enjoy helping others to share their stories in a unique and engaging way. I love exploring new places, meeting new people and creating bespoke and site-specific artworks. I relish the challenge of meeting a client’s brief, whatever that may be and have vast experience working with a wide range of clients over the years, working creatively in many differing environments. Throughout my career I have explored other media and methods within my commissions, moving from a purely handmade traditional approach, to incorporating digital media and new technologies. This fresh approach has expanded my vision of what can be achieved in my public artworks allowing me to widen my practice and include other mediums. It has also equipped me with new skills that I enjoy sharing through public participation and my ability to offer a wider scope of media in my response to the needs of commissioners. I’m excited to further this innovative approach and as a member of the Crafts Council and STEAMhouse Birmingham, I look forward to continuing to explore my digital and technological skills in the future. Each commission excites me and is a new adventure and I pride myself in delivering high quality permanent artworks, delivered on time and within budget. Please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss any projects you may have in mind!
