Parkside School is a wonderful environment where children’s curiosity is awakened. Their journey is one of discovery; where talents and passions are nurtured and developed, and our pupils are encouraged to embrace risk-taking and take responsibility for their learning. They develop the courage to rise to each challenge, persevere when the going gets tough and face their fears with confidence. We catch them when they fall, show them what they have learnt from this and guide them back on their individual journey; whilst instilling an appetite for embracing challenge. The positive message of 'make it happen’ underpins our whole approach to each pupil’s learning journey and becomes the driving force for success in whatever they aspire to achieve. Inspired teaching, passionate and dedicated staff, beautiful grounds totalling 45 acres and excellent facilities ensure we deliver a dynamic and innovative curriculum that creates 'light bulb' moments and ignites that spark of curiosity. Academic excellence, outstanding sporting achievements, dynamic technological enterprise and exciting performing arts are all underpinned by exceptional pastoral care. Parkside pupils flourish and are valued as individuals; happy, aspirational and confident, as they move to their senior school. It matters that I know each pupil, as one parent recently said "Ms Janssen strikes a balance of achieving good results but doing it in a way that is good for the boys – she knows how boys work." Our pupils see their future in terms of unlimited options rather than curtailed ambitions. ‘Make it Happen’ is my mantra, and is lived throughout our Parkside family. Don’t just take my word for it, come and visit us to see how your child would thrive in such a happy place. I would be delighted to welcome you for an individual or live virtual tour.

At Folkestone Academy we foster an environment where pupils value their education, grow in confidence and ambition, and are inspired to develop their talents and passions. We teach traditional academic subjects alongside the creative arts, sports and a vibrant extra-curricular offer including drama, debating, football, dance, board games, music technology and more. We want our pupils to discover their talents with our support and be the best they can be. Folkestone Academy is a school evolving to support pupils beyond the classroom. During the two lockdowns we introduced our digital platform to ensure all pupils had access to home learning and did not miss a day of school. We are working with our partner – Google, to support pupils in succeeding in the digital age. As we move into this new era we will provide all new Year 7 pupils with a Chromebook to guarantee access to online learning. We are an inclusive school which strives to ensure that all pupils, whatever barriers they may face, to succeed. We provide extensive support for our pupils, especially those new to the school. We have a wide range of specialist staff to support pupils who need additional help as well as dedicated non-teaching staff to help manage the day to day worries and concerns of parents and children. We look forward to working with you in the coming weeks, months and years to realise your child’s ambitions for the future. Our leaders care passionately about ensuring the young people of Folkestone and the surrounding areas benefit from an excellent education, one that enables them to make the best possible choices for their future path, be it university, high quality apprenticeships or other areas of work.

TISKA Karate Lincoln

About the chief instructor Gursharan Sahota was born in Kenya, East Africa but moved to the UK at the age of 12. He took up Karate at the age of 14 in the local Bedford club and was awarded black belt 1st dan (shodan) four years later. Now an 8th Dan, Gursharan has competed in a multitude of kata and kumite events, many at national and international level. But the most significant event in his career was the visit he made in 1984 to Japan. There, he fulfilled a great ambition by training in a Japanese dojo under the instruction of Sensei Hirokazu Kanazawa. This experience proved to be a turning point for Gursharan. On his return to England, he realised the trip had been the inspiration he needed to dedicate his future to training and teaching karate as a way of life. Gursharan’s first club was opened in Luton/Dunstable in 1981 and this is now the association’s hombu (HQ). Having been a teacher of the art for many years, he formed his own association in 1993 – TISKA (The Traditional International Shotokan Karate Association) which is now one of the biggest associations in the UK. Gursharan’s love of karate has never diminished. He still teaches over 35 classes a week in the UK and regularly takes master classes internationally. All in all, he has brought hundreds of students of all ages up to black belt standard and beyond. He is also involved in charity work, helping to subsidise trips for surgeons to third world countries to operate on underprivileged children. He has, for many years, funded many projects in India, and is at present helping to fund the building of a new school.

Sarah Savage Yoga

I started practicing yoga in my early twenties with a vague but niggling sense of wanting to do something to soothe a stiff body and an anxious, overactive mind. I’d always done a lot of sport but considered myself inflexible. I’d never really had any kind of spiritual practice. I remember that first, strange and captivating savasana in the chilly scout’s hut - a door had opened. Yoga has been a portal to discovery ever since. As a teacher, my aim is to guide students in exploring all that their bodies know. I believe that through kind attention and the magic of motion we can start to feel into new areas, release unhelpful patterns and find a greater sense of joy, freedom and connection that ripples into all aspects of our lives. For me, this is the magic of yoga and why I am so passionate about my own practice and sharing it with others. I share embodied, heart-led practices of movement, breath and meditation. I offer a space for you to move without rules and without rushing, a space for self-expression and to feel what is waiting to be felt. Informing my teaching style is an interest in neuroplasticity, heart and body intelligence, functional movement, trauma and mindfulness teachings. You can take a look at some of my inspiration here. I love feeling hot sun on my skin, peanut butter and jam in my porridge, and spotting cute dogs in the park with my partner, Tommy. I completed my 250 hour Yoga Alliance Professionals teacher training with Stretch in 2019, with Carl Faure and Calli Popham. I am also a qualified pre- and post-natal yoga teacher having completed an intensive training with Stretch in 2021.

Sally Gunnett

I work with natural elements to record places and periods of time, mainly using plants and their naturally occurring dyes. After a rural upbringing I moved to London in 2000 and have lived and worked here since. I graduated with a degree in Fine Art from Goldsmiths College in 2003 and recently completed the Artist Teacher Scheme at Oxford Brookes University with distinction. I am currently working as a freelance artist and teacher having previously taught art and photography in mainstream education for over a decade, becoming a head of department before deciding to concentrate on my own artistic practice after giving birth to my son. I continue my love of teaching by delivering workshops and courses. My current practice explores the change and growth of plants in my garden and other places which have significance to me. I work with time-based processes and alternative printmaking techniques, using pigments in plant dyes and rust, to record periods in time or the status of plants at a particular moment. I am interested in the unpredictability of these processes and the effects that they have both on the plants used to create them and the environment they are created in. I am currently investigating how nature can be used to record periods of time by creating work in the environment, documenting the effects of natural elements such as rain. I have work in private and public collections internationally and have exhibited nationally including at the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair for the past three years. I completed a residency in 2018 as part of the New: Defence arts project in Essex which culminated in a solo exhibition of the work I created.
