Strength and Soul

strength and soul

We believe you can recover from your injury or illness despite being told otherwise. We believe when your pain is gone, you have a future full of possibility. WHY? BECAUSE WE’VE DONE IT OURSELVES BUT – It takes more than regular exercise and clean eating to be truly healthy. Taking charge of your health and lifestyle means making changes, some changes may be permanent, others are temporary. Ayurveda has a great phrase ‘like attracts like and opposites balance’ when we do too much of one thing it can lead us down the path of disease, introduce the opposite (often the things we don’t want to do) and we create balance and true health. I’m not here to count calories, make you run every day and guarantee you a six-pack. I am here to focus on your health. I won’t focus on the physical appearance but investigate what’s going on under the skin, the parts you don’t see. I investigate how your digestive system is functioning for your body to absorb the nutrients from your food and build your tissues. I look at the root cause and uncover those symptoms that may have been around for so long that it becomes normal. JOANN BUCHAN – Ayurveda Practitioner, yoga teacher, therapist. Fractured her coccyx in primary school, had hip surgery at the age of 30, lost her Mum to cancer at the age of 18 and dealt with stress, hair loss and hormone imbalances choosing the route of Ayurveda and yoga to overcome these naturally and have daily tools to cope. KEVIN BUCHAN- Injury-prone retired Rugby player, who has injured pretty much everything from head to toe. After retiring from sport, he suffered depression and a loss of identity alongside the pain that various injuries bring. Kev uses his experience in sport, injury and multiple modalities to give you the best chance of recovery. You can find more about Kev over here at RAPTOR. ARE YOU READY TO DO WHAT IT TAKES? You’re in the right place. I believe a truly healthy lifestyle should be sustainable. It shouldn’t be something you ‘get back into’ or ‘start’ it’s part of your every day, it’s part of you. JOANN BUCHAN Wife, Boss, Nature Lover Favourite Quote “Take care of your body, it’s the only place you have to live” The truth is . . . There is no one size fits or all quick fix; YOU ARE UNIQUE and have your own unique story. Your diet and lifestyle should reflect that. Are you? In physical pain – hip, lower back, joint pain? Are you doing what you perceive to be all the right things but still not feeling your best? Confused about what you should be eating? Always taking the latest supplement or health food? Overworking, over-exercising or overeating? Signs are showing up – digestive symptoms, hormonal imbalances, tiredness You’re in the right place. I’ve been there, feeling like I was making changes and doing everything I was supposed to be doing, but something was missing, I felt alone, unhappy and in pain. I had surgery on my hip at the age of 30 and expected everything to be perfect after that. Surgery would be the answer to all my pain. I was entirely unprepared for the length of the recovery, mental struggle and frustrations of not being able to do what I had previously done. I still felt so exhausted and still in pain. I discovered something unique; How often have you said, “I’m getting there”? Where are you going? There is no there. You are already there, whatever that step of the journey is for you. There will always be a next step and a next step, a different season of the environment or season in our lives. We will always need to learn to adapt, change, and grow. It’s in our nature as humans to grow and evolve. I’ve been around the world, learning from some of the most innovative thinkers, teachers and healers. Soaking up their wisdom and applying it to my injuries and imbalances as well as helping my clients. I’ve worked in my private practice for seven years as well as delivering programs in schools, corporate, taught workshops. Melissa Liversedge Yoga

I first became aware of yoga as a child. My grandmother used to tell me to practise ‘yoga breathing’ (long, slow inhalations and exhalations) if I ever felt worried or unwell. She swore by the benefits of yoga, both physically and mentally, and although I never actually saw her practise a single pose, I considered her to be the ultimate yoga guru! After University, I worked in the City as a stockbroker, at which point I officially started going to yoga classes, seeking a counter balance to the busy lifestyle I was living. I went to all sorts of different classes - whatever the gym had on offer and whatever I could find locally: flow yoga, power yoga, bikram yoga, sivananda yoga. I soon realised that yoga could be quite a different experience depending on the type and the teacher. I had the good fortune of meeting a Japanese colleague who swore by the benefits of Iyengar Yoga. She introduced me to a senior Iyengar teacher, Maxine Tobias, who completely transformed my experience of yoga. She had spent many years under the guidance of BKS Iyengar himself and was very inspirational. I was amazed how the Iyengar method gives you a deep understanding of your own body, its strengths and its weaknesses. Although the classes looked easier, and you got to use belts and blocks, actually I found them the most challenging. Furthermore, the classes were full of real people: all ages, shapes and sizes. Each person came to understand their limitations and their strengths and were on their own journey. It wasn’t about the gymnastics of the poses, it was about the relationship between the body and the mind. After several years of practice, I applied to do my teacher training course in 2005, but then found out I was pregnant. Life and babies took over, so it was only after another 10 years and a new life in Hampshire, I felt I was ready to reapply to train as an Iyengar Teacher. The training course was long and challenging, as it should be when you are dealing with other people’s bodies, but I was lucky enough to have one of the best and most experienced teachers living nearby, Judith Jones, who pushed and encouraged me to aim for precision and quality of teaching. Judith has spent many years visiting Pune and the Iyengar family, and has always been heavily involved with the Iyengar Yoga Association UK. She is truly remarkable and continues to be a great inspiration & mentor. I am currently preparing for the next level of qualification within the Iyengar Yoga system and hope to continue my yoga journey for as long as I am able. I have a great husband, 3 kids, 2 dogs, and a fish called Martin. I like the sea, travel, fashion, shoes and people. Family is the most important thing to me.

Hayley Heals

hayley heals

Hi, I'm Hayley and I'm a healer and teacher. I'm trained as a Moon Mother (giving female energy healings and blessings), a shamanic healer and a crystal healer. I combine these with over twenty years experience working with witchcraft, the moon and nature to bring you healing, empowerment and knowledge. So you too can work with natural forces to bring positive change to your life. About Being a Moon Mother I began my journey as a Moon Mother in 2016. I had been taking part in something called 'The Worldwide Womb Blessing' for a year- which happens five times a year where thousands of women connect through a meditation to help them feel more empowered as women. You can read more about this on https://www.wombblessing.com After a year of taking part in this event that is run by a woman called Miranda Gray, I came across something on the Womb Blessing website about 'Moon Mothers'. Something in the name itself rang a bell in me so I continued reading. I learnt that a Moon Mother is a woman trained to do personalised womb healings and womb blessings. My heart sang in a way it never had before, and I knew this was a path I wanted to follow. I found out that Miranda Gray (she was the only teacher at the time- there are now trained teachers in addition) was doing a Level 1 Moon Mother training in London that year. I was living in Essex at the time and London is not to far, so it was ideal! Not only that but as it turns out Miranda Gray hadn't been in the UK for a few years, as she teaches all over the world, so it also felt like an unique opportunity. So I went to the Level 1 training and I fell in love with it, learning how to womb healing and blessing, everything about it felt right. I definitely wanted to continue this journey, this first one literally changed my life as I learnt how to live to my cycle and this shifted everything- even leading me to let go of taking the contraceptive pill after so many years. Two years later, there was a Level 2 training, this time in Glastonbury. It had always been my dream to go to Glastonbury but I had never been. I really wanted to go but didn't know how I would get there, or be able to afford the training, plus accommodation etc. I decided to make a gofundme page asking for donations, and I was asking for this instead of birthday presents as the training also fell on my birthday weekend. I was able partly because of the GoFundMe and partly through my own determined saving to have all the money I needed, I had a friend offer to drive and let me down, but somehow I still could afford the travel so I made it! If the first training had changed me, this weekend in Glastonbury deeply impacted me, as I did the training, but also felt much deep awakening from being in the Spiritual home of Glastonbury. I made close friends with other Moon Mothers this time. I learnt how to do the Female Soul Healing (a deeper version of the womb healing) and how to do The Gift for Men (a feminine blessing for men). The following year, a level 3 training was announced, this time in Ireland and would be held just before an annual 'Moon Mother Gathering' an event where lots of Moon Mothers come together from all over the world. On this occasion the gathering would be taking the Moon Mothers to the different sacred sites in Ireland. Of course I wanted to go! I was in the same position financially and there was even more to think about- flights etc. But I was determined to do it and so yet again by my own determination and grit, I found myself there. It was a beautiful experience shared with my new found friends from the previous years. My spirituality journey was profoundly touched by the whole experience- the training, Ireland and the sacred sites we visited. I could now offer another six versions of the womb blessing! - Opening to Sacredness, Opening to Peace and the four archetype blessings of Maiden, Mother, Enchantress and Crone. Becoming a Moon Mother and sharing this work with others has been transformative, changing my life in many ways. Out of all the work I do, this is where I feel I shine the most!

After all, if our society has developed to accept all sorts of partnerships why should in dancing be any different? They have enjoyed competing together at the most prestigious events in the UK, including the British Open that every year summons thousands of dancers across the world.

Tai Chi Holme On Spalding Moor and Bubwith

York

Howard was born in Hull in 1946 and began training under Chee Soo in 1973. He has been an instructor of Tai Chi Chuan and Feng Shou Kung Fu since 1976 and is the holder of 7th Tengchi Master Graded in both Tai Chi and Feng Shou (Kung Fu) and 3rd Tengchi in Chi Shu. He lives with his wife, artist Gisela, in Holme On Spalding Moor, East Yorkshire. Howard’s early fascination for these arts soon grew into a life-time vocation, realizing that they went beyond a purely physical discipline, but was also a tool for self-development, spiritual growth, and a way of helping himself and others to achieve holistic health and well-being. Extremely proficient in the Feng Shou self defence arts, Howard nevertheless felt a special love for the various forms, K’ai Men and Dao Yin. In fact he is famous for being Chee Soo’s only instructor who practised the Tai Chi form every morning, with the exception of Christmas Day, for 15 years! (And he is still practising with an odd exception, on a daily basis! Chee Soo had hundreds, perhaps thousands of students who entered his training halls through the years, but in the end there were only four in the country who stayed long enough to gain the highest Master Grade Chee Soo issued in his life time. One of those students was Howard, respected by his peers as the foremost authority on the Lee Family Tai Chi form. Howard’s and Chee Soo’s friendship was legendary and it is a privilege for those who today train under Howard to be shown an art so ancient, taught as he was taught, undiluted by fads and fashions, imbued with love, enthusiasm, precision and quality. Chee Soo passed away in 1994. In order to safeguard the continuation of the Arts and their philosophy, Howard founded the East-West Taoist Association in 1999. Howard holds regular all-day courses and grading days at Holme On Spalding Moor, East Yorkshire. For more information about classes, courses or training aids check out the links above.

Maggi and Sarah created two projects to engage teenagers during the summer holidays, encouraging creativity and the development of new skills. The pack included a hard-backed sketchbook with a workbook of suggested art based activities, also Derwent Arts kindly donated some drawing equipment. The second project included a fully illustrated instruction booklet, coordinated fabrics, ribbons, needles and threads to create a decorative length of bunting, which could be customised with applique lettering or imagery. The scope of these projects could reach beyond the original pack and the summer holiday period, inspiring children to consider further individual projects. The quality of the pack and its learning materials encourages young people to work independently and the workbooks encouraged recipients to explore their own personal projects. The packs also contain Crafts Council project ideas to inspire children and teenagers, and support material for those who may wish to embark on the Arts Awards scheme. ‘Recreate Make’ intend to develop an Arts Award offering in the near future. With the help of the West Cumbria Learning Centre, Maggi and Sarah were able to distribute projects to 38 young people across West Cumbria who it was felt would find them beneficial. We gave the packs out during the summer holiday of 2021 to help additional homeschooling ideas for the arts. They were given to children from Wigton to Whitehaven, the majority centred around the Workington area.
