Kokoro Karate is a traditional Shotokan karate school with a modern approach to practical applications. At Kokoro we take an holistic approach to our training, developing mind, body and spirit. We believe this empowers our students and develops mindfulness, self-confidence, heath, fitness, concentration, co-ordination and respect. The Class Instructor is Sensei Paul Cooper 4th Dan. Paul has over thirty years of experience, achieving his black belt in 1987 with Hanshi Shiro Asano 9th Dan, who was a direct student of Nakayama, the founder of the JKA. Paul has trained internationally with many world respected teachers in his karate career grading with the SKIF, SSKA and the Conroy Karate Group. We are governed by NAKMAS (National Association of Karate and Martial Arts Schools), the only martial arts body in Britain to hold a Government recognised British Standards Quality Kitemark (BS:EN ISO 9001:2015) via the British Standards Insitution (BSI) and is accredited to the Equality Standard: A Framework for Sport at Intermediate level. Paul is a senior instructor and examiner for the NAKMAS Governing Body and the club operates within the strict policies and guidelines laid down by them. Our dojo is at The Old Library Sports & Community Centre, Singleton Road, Splott, Cardiff, CF24 2ET Training is suitable for men, women and children aged ten/eleven years and over. We do allow children (primary school age) by prior agreement to train if a parent or guardian trains as well in the senior class, we also offer our Kokoro Tigers programme that is designed for children from 4/5 (school reception class) to 10/11 years old. Shotokan training is divided into three parts: kihon (basics), kata (forms or patterns of moves), and kumite (sparring). Techniques in kihon and kata are characterised by deep, long stances that provide stability, enable powerful movements, and strengthen the legs. Shotokan is regarded as a dynamic martial art as it develops anaerobic, powerful techniques as well as developing speed.

The main aim behind Driver CPC is to improve road safety, providing better qualified drivers to help reduce road casualties. Driver CPC also aims to bring an improved professional and positive image to the industries, attracting more people to drive buses, coaches and lorries for a living. It is aimed not only at improving the knowledge and skills of LGV and PCV drivers when they first start work, but also ensuring those skills are maintained and developed throughout the driver’s working life. For new drivers it introduces a new initial qualification which increases the amount of knowledge that drivers need before they can drive. When combined with the current licence acquisition tests, the initial qualification comprises a four hour theory test and a two hour practical test. All drivers, new and existing, will then have to undertake 35 hours of training every five years to ensure that their Driver CPC is current. This is known as Periodic Training. Periodic Training is designed to confirm and expand on the existing knowledge and skills of each driver to ensure that they continue to be safe, courteous and fuel efficient drivers. This will also enable drivers to keep up-to-date with ever changing regulations and to benefit from training throughout their whole career. All existing professional PCV drivers who held a full, valid category D, D1, D+E or D1+E licence at 10 September 2008 will need to complete the 35 hours of Periodic Training by 10 September 2013, unless they are exempt. After this, they will need to undertake a further 35 hours of training in every subsequent five year period in order to retain their Driver CPC. Existing PCV drivers are known as 'Acquired Rights' drivers i.e. drivers who already held a full vocational licence to drive buses and coaches prior to 10 September 2008. Drivers who hold a D1 (minibus) entitlement by virtue of passing a car test pre 1997 are not classed as acquired rights drivers and will therefore need to complete the initial qualification.

Formerly Joanne Heald, Joanne graduated from Trinity College of Music in 2005 with a Postgraduate Diploma in Voice, BMus (Hons) and Trinity’s Silver Medal for Vocal achievement. Her singing and acting credits include Kenneth Branagh’s film The Magic Flute, Ellen Orford in Peter Grimes, Larina in Eugene Onegin at Jackson’s Lane Theatre, London, The Stepmother in Neely Bruce’s Musical Hansel and Gretel at The Mick Jagger Centre, Woman and Nun in The Saint of Bleeker Street at the Peacock Theatre in London and the Father in an all female cast of Hansel and Gretel at The People’s Theatre London. She has sung the soprano solos of many oratorios and scared works in the UK and America, including Mozart’s Mass in C Minor, Regina Coeli and Exultate Jubilate, Faure’s Requiem, Haydn’s Salve Regina, Nelson Mass and Handel’s Messiah. Joanne began her teaching career at Bird College of Dance, Music and Theatre Performance, where she taught Singing, Piano and Music Theatre within the Music Department and school programmes. She combined this with being a Music Examiner for A Level with the OCR exam board and conducting the Bexley Youth Choir. After 11 years at Bird College, Joanne moved to Russell House Preparatory School in Kent where she became the Assistant Head of Music and was involved with teaching Music and the school’s choral endeavours including conducting a prize winning Chamber Choir. Joanne played the piano at all school events and helped coach the singing and dance for their Musical drama performances. She left in July 2018 to have her 3rd child. Since relocating to Derby, Joanne is Parish Organist and leads the choir at St Stephen’s Church, teaches singing at Stagecoach and coaches Musical Theatre Students. Joanne also teaches the LAMDA communication syllabus which includes: Speaking Verse and Prose, Reading for Performance and Speaking in Public. Theatre people. Joanne is a licensed chaperone. Welcome to the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences (NDCN). Our aim is to carry out high quality research into the function of the nervous system in health and disease. We have a multidisciplinary workforce of close to 500 people, mostly based at the John Radcliffe Hospital, but also spread across the University. We are an integrated part of the broader neuroscience community across Oxford, with many links to other departments. Many of our scientists are also practising clinicians and provide general and specialist care through the Oxford University Hospitals Foundation NHS Trust. Through our DPhil programme, and our very strong group of early career researchers we play an important role in developing the careers of young scientists. NDCN builds on a long history of research in neurology, brain imaging, eye disorders, and anaesthetics in Oxford which has made major contributions to our understanding of how the brain works and to the development of treatments which have changed lives. Major discoveries made by NDCN scientists include the discovery of a type of cell in the eye which helps regulate our body clock, new techniques to image the human brain, devices to make anaesthesia safer, methods to prevent vascular diseases of the brain including stroke and forms of dementia, understanding and treating chronic pain, pioneering treatments such as gene therapy for inherited eye disorders, and the diagnosis and treatment of immunological disorders of the nervous system.
