Just Collaborate

just collaborate

London

Just Space is an informal alliance of around 80 community groups, campaigns and concerned independent organisations which was formed to act as a voice for Londoners at grass-roots level during the formulation of London’s major planning strategy, particularly the London Plan. Everyone is affected by planning but the planning process is technical and often daunting for the majority of people, even though the issues themselves are readily understood: housing, green space, jobs, transport, pollution, and so on. The aim of Just Space is to improve public participation in planning, to ensure that policy is fairer towards communities – in a system dominated by the interests of developers. The Just Space Network brings together a wide range of groups, some with a London-wide remit (such as the London Tenants Federation, the London Forum of Civic and Amenity Societies, Friends of the Earth), others locally based community groups (such as Latin Elephant and Ward’s Corner Community Coalition). The Network also has links with some of the Universities in London (e.g. UCL, CASS and LSE) whose staff and students provide research that the network presents alongside their own grass roots evidence at London Plan hearings or in other contexts. We work by supporting our member groups and spreading information further afield. Groups collaborate and coordinate in making representations to planning authorities, share learning, research and experience through workshops and publications. As a result of this engagement people have come to understand how political these planning documents are and how much they influence many of the key issues that groups are focused on such as health inequalities, targets for relevant housing, progress on environmental issues and pitches for gypsies and travellers. Members of Just Space continue to monitor and expose contradictions in the London Plan, and other planning policy. Just Space is developing further work with communities, including people who have not been much engaged before. To join Just Space and be part of the network, please email richardlee50(at)gmail.com and explain your interest.

The NEN Trust was setup in 2008 to play the critical role of establishing an entrepreneurship ecosystem in a large number of tier 1 and 2 academic campuses across India. The goal was to enable young people on campuses to ‘do’ entrepreneurship while still on campus so that they could actively build aspiration, skills, confidence and networks which would increase their chances of starting new ventures successfully sooner rather than later upon graduation. Since its inception, NEN has worked with 500+ academic institutions including the founding institutions of its network IIT Bombay, IIM Ahmedabad, BITS Pilani, S P Jain Institute of Management and IBAB. NEN spent its initial years creating and establishing student E Cells actively running activities, competitions and start-up sessions across hundreds of campuses; trained 1500+ faculty in ‘doing experiential entrepreneurship programs’ including workshops and courses on campus; helped spur the development of 100+ entrepreneurship and innovation centres within its network institutions; and enabled 100,000s of students to get the exposure, and develop skills in entrepreneurship and venture creation. Today, NEN enables campuses and incubators to run virtual accelerated programs to maximise startup success. NEN is partnering with State startup policy makers, Govt. incubators, MHRD IICs and Innovation Labs. NEN’s program structure, tools & resources, digital content, technology platform, facilitator development and wide network of mentors is helping build healthy startups and empowering the next generation of entrepreneurs. In its journey, NEN tied up for funding with Wadhwani Foundation (https://www.wfglobal.org) for their programs in India. The Foundation is a not-for-profit with the primary mission of accelerating economic development by driving job creation in India and other emerging economies, and in the US, through large-scale initiatives in entrepreneurship, small business growth, innovation, and skilling. What makes our wine tastings, wine courses and wine tasting events special? Over 10,000 Satisfied Customers Great Tutors An Unparalleled Range of Courses Small Classes Flexible Booking Impartial Advice Satisfied Customers We have been running wine tastings and wine tasting courses in London for over 25 years, in Manchester for over 15 in Aberdeen and Birmingham for over 10 and in Belfast for 4. Over this time, we have created a following of over 10,000 satisfied customers. And today, over 60% of new customers book for our wine tastings and wine tasting courses on the personal recommendation of a friend or colleague. Great Tutors Our tutors are at the top of their profession. All are qualified to WSET Diploma level and are members of the UK Association of Wine Educators, the professional body for those who make their living in whole or in part from teaching about wine. Many are also members of the elite Circle of Wine Writers. All travel widely to keep their wine knowledge up to date. Skilled communicators, they know how to make wine tasting and learning about wine fun. An Unparalleled Range of Courses We were the first in the UK to offer a comprehensive range of wine tastings, wine tasting courses and wine tasting events designed primarily to appeal to wine consumers rather than aspiring members of the wine trade. In addition to weekly wine tastings in London, we organise over 30 introductory wine tasting courses a year in London and other UK cities, over 20 intermediate and advanced wine tasting courses and, for those with hectic weekday schedules, wine tasting workshops on Saturdays, when lunch is an integral part of the day. Although wine consumers still make up the majority of our customers, our London wine tastings and intermediate and advanced wine courses are growing in appeal to people studying for their wine trade qualifications, especially WSET Diploma and the prestigious, but for many, elusive Master of Wine qualification. Small Classes We know of some wine course providers who pack 30 people or more into a class. We think that’s way too many. In a class of that size, learning is more difficult, participation is inhibited and you never get to know the other people in the room. We limit bookings for our introductory, intermediate and advanced wine tasting courses and our Saturday wine tasting workshops to 16 people – much more sociable, much more fun. Flexible Booking Many people who sign up for our wine tasting courses on weekday evenings lead busy lives, working under pressure and travelling on business, often at short notice. We understand the problem. If you have to miss a course session, you may either send a substitute or pick up that session on a subsequent course. Just let us know and we will make the arrangements. We make no charge for this and set no time limit! Impartial Advice Many wine tastings and wine tasting courses are run by wine merchants. Nothing wrong with that. It’s a great way to get potential customers into their stores and promote sales of their wines. We are not wine merchants. We don’t sell wine. We are not paid by any wine merchant to promote their wines. So, at our wine tastings and on our wine courses, you will never come under any pressure to buy wine. The wines we select for you to taste are intended to illustrate the main points of the wine course session or the theme of the wine tasting. We hope you will enjoy most of the wines we give you to taste but don’t necessarily expect you to enjoy them all. Your course tutor will help you to understand what makes a wine enjoyable. But he or she will also tell you if a wine is too young, too old, too acidic, too alcoholic or just plain faulty. Just imagine a wine merchant doing that! Wherever possible, we buy the wines we give you to taste from local retail outlets. We will tell you where we bought them and how much we paid. So, if you like a particular wine, you can shop for more with confidence and without difficulty.

The In The Pocket band workshop takes place over three days. Classes run from 11am to 2pm on Wednesday and Thursday and 11am to 3pm on Friday. Each day involves three learning sessions of around 45 minutes with two twenty minute breaks. At the beginning of the workshop, we listen to some music and collectively choose songs to learn and spend the rest of the first day learning the parts of the first song under the guidance of the teachers. We finish the day with a jam session. On day two, we run through the song from day one and start learning a second song. We finish the day with a jam session. On day three, we hone and polish our two songs. We may even add another song to the mix. At the end of day three, we perform the songs we’ve learned for broadcast to the world via social media platforms. Who Is It For? All young musicians aged 8 to 16 are welcome to join. If you have at least six months experience playing your instrument, you can fit in and be part of the band. Whatever instruments you play, you can rock. OK, we haven’t had anyone turn up with a harp yet but we regularly work with singers, guitarists, pianists and keyboardists, drummers, saxophonists, trumpeters, ukuleleists, bassists and so on. If you play an exotic instrument and aren’t sure if you’ll fit in, please get in touch and we’ll let you know if you can participate. If you have any other questions or queries about participation, please get in touch. The Vibe In The Pocket band workshops are run with the intention of empowering young musicians to learn independently and work collaboratively. In our experience, most young musicians with the right encouragement, are happy to take ownership of their own learning. They are keen to help each other perform at their best. With that in mind, we focus on creating an easy-going and supportive atmosphere where learning is fun and eveyone can contribute to the music making no matter their level of experience

Stitch and Make Studio

Northampton

When small, Abigail Jackson made shoes from wallpaper sample books and lashed her brothers’ wooden building blocks onto her feet with string believing herself to be a geisha. In her bedroom she stitched gnomes on hankies and cut off the frills from her maxi dress to make clothes for Pippa the pocket-sized doll. In the kitchen her mum sat her on the draining board, put sellotape across her fringe and cut under it. Abigail Jackson became one of a tiny handful of Daventry punks, who shuffling round town in bondage trousers from Seditionaries and handmade clothes coloured in with biro pens, held together with hundreds of safety pins. In her bedroom she made homemade Sid Vicious badges with pages from the NME and sticky back plastic. Dreamt of being in The Slits and planned never to have a proper job. Abi went to Northampton Art College in the ’80’s to study fashion design and Illustration. Its this foundation of designing and pattern cutting that has coloured her judgment ever since. From opening a clothes shop in Coventry at the age of 19 to opening the studio in her 50’s Its only ever been about creating and making. Abi works as a freelancer so no two jobs are the same. She designs, sews and makes for a living, breathing, all singing, all dancing proper job. In the between times she has work as a freelance wardrobe supervisor traveling extensively and working with some wonderful people. Upon returning home she stitches in her studio, works on community or school projects, plans workshops and collaborates with other creatives in Burns Street Studios. Welcome to her website, where you can explore the studio. You can book onto a workshop which will be held at The Stitch and Make Studio and run by Abi or guest creatives. If you would like to visit the studio to view Abi’s collection of one off pieces of clothing please get in touch. Alternatively, if you have ideas for a hen party or a group workshop get in touch too.
