We are an amazing special school and 6th Form with up to 150 students aged between 11 to 19 years old. Students are taught in classes of up to 12 individuals, supported by a teacher and normally at least 1 teaching assistant. Most new students join us in September in either Year 7 or Year 12 but we do admit young people into other year groups throughout the year where vacancies exist. Our students all have complex learning & additional needs (LAN) and all are supported by an Education, Health & Care Plan (EHCP) which is reviewed annually. The majority of students join us are operating at least 3 to 4 years below chronological expectations. Our students’ additional needs include global developmental delay, autism, ADHD / ODD/ADD, anxiety, OCD, sleep apnoea, cerebral palsy, visual or hearing impairment, dyspraxia/coordination difficulties, hydrocephalus, epilepsy, chromosomal abnormalities including Down syndrome, speech, language & communication difficulties. It is our explicit aim to facilitate every opportunity to help address our students wider ‘therapeutic’ needs. Whilst some of our students have some mobility difficulties, due to the split-level nature of our site we are unable to cater for young people in wheelchairs. We describe our young people as not disabled but differently abled. We have a highly dedicated, experienced and specially trained staff team committed to achieving the best possible outcomes for every young person. We believe in building a real and lasting sense of community and belonging – we are proud of being an especially welcoming school. Feeling safe and developing positive and trusting relationships are key to our students’ success. Securing our students’ wellbeing and positive mental health is central to our provision. Erin Whyte (founder and teacher) – I started my love of music at a young age and began classical training from the age of 14. After leaving school I went on to study popular singing at Jewel and Esk College on their HND Music course. During these 2 years I sang in bands and in choirs and my passion for performing was born. From here I went on to focus on my classical voice at Edinburgh Napier University where I studied on their BMus (hons) course for 4 years. I gained a lot of experience singing solo and in small groups which really helped build my self-confidence. I have worked with children for over 16 years, starting out shadowing a music teacher in primary schools. This is where I found my love for teaching music to young children. Knowing I wanted to work with children I left retail and started working at Newtongrange After School Club. From here I began working as a Learning Assistant at Stockbridge Primary School and worked at their After School Club. Following the birth of my son in 2014 I gave up work to be a full time Mum. With lots more free time I could take him to classes for little ones where I met some of my best friends, and Charlie did too. I found out how invaluable these classes were for both child and carer and realised that this was the environment I wanted to work in. In 2015 I became a teacher for Monkey Music. Here I learnt how to really work with babies and toddlers and grow relationships with them and their carers. My dream for a long time has been to combine my passions for singing, music and working with young children. With the arrival of our daughter Katie at the start of 2017 I am finally back to work and realising that dream. I think it’s highly important to have affordable and educational classes for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers in and around local areas, not only for the little ones to make friends, but for the adults to meet people from the community too. Music is a great tool to bring people together and also encourages self-confidence which is an important factor in a young person’s life.n

Reducing low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is the priority in managing patients with severe dyslipidaemia (cholesterol abnormality) and at high risk of cardiovascular (CV) death and disability. Yet even when treated with potent statins, many patients fail to achieve LDL-cholesterol targets and therefore their risk of accelerated atherosclerosis and CV death remains high. This problem is particularly critical in patients with familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) (the most commonly occurring genetic condition in the world). People with FH typically have very high LDL cholesterol levels on treatment, and consequently, are at very high risk of premature and sudden CV death, myocardial infarction and stroke. Additionally, some patients are unable to tolerate statins – particularly at higher doses – and, therefore, do not achieve LDL-cholesterol goals. What is the importance of PCSK9? Discovered in 2003,1 PCSK9 is a protein made by the liver which increases the removal of LDL receptors from the surface of liver cells. These LDL receptors are critically important in removal of serum LDL-cholesterol from the circulation. People with so-called ‘gain of function’ PCSK9 mutations over-express PCSK9, and therefore have very high plasma levels of LDL cholesterol and are at very risk of atherosclerosis and CV mortality and morbidity.2 In contrast, people with so-called ‘loss of function’ PCSK9 mutations, have very LDL cholesterol levels and reduced risk for heart disease.3 What is PCSK9 inhibition? Different approaches to lowering PCSK9 are now licensed. These include fully human monoclonal antibodies (alirocumab, evolocumab) and a small-interfering RNA therapy (inclisiran). Trials show that these PCSK9 inhibitors reduce LDL cholesterol levels by about 50-60 percent - a significantly greater effect than that achieved with currently available therapies – either when given alone or in combination. These LDL cholesterol lowering effects have been consistently across a broad group of patients, including those with familial hypercholesterolaemia in clinical trials.4 Which clinical settings will benefit from the availability of PCSK9 inhibitors? These treatments offer the potential to reduce cardiovascular risk in patients whose clinical needs cannot be satisfied by current therapy. These include: Patients with familial hypercholesterolaemia – an inherited disorder of lipid metabolism with a very high risk of early CV death or morbidity, if not diagnosed or treated early Patients who cannot tolerate statins, who therefore remain at high risk of CV events such as heart attacks and strokes Patients with established heart disease who have not achieved LDL-cholesterol goals despite current therapies

Sahan Society Centre, based in Hayes town within the London Borough of Hillingdon, was incepted in 2006 at the back drop of the closure of the Hillingdon Race Equality Council (HREC), a centre in the Hayes locality and run by the local authority to advise, support and assist service users on equality and race-related issues. The centre had come to a close following a decision made by the local authority to transfer its services to the local authority’s civic centre during the early part of 2006. Prior to its closure, the HREC had carried out a local research on the usefulness of the services offered to its members and service users. It had transpired that the majority of those seeking the centre’s assistance (78%) were of Somali heritage based in the Hayes area amongst other BME communities. This reflected the growing Somali population in the area and the need for targeted assistance and support to be offered to the growing community. The local community, particularly young women and mothers, were unable to understand and utilize the services offered to assist them with their health and child care amongst other needs and found it difficult to communicate these needs due to language barriers and issues of trust. Upon the HREC’s closure, and following on from the research that was carried out in the local community, a discussion was held by the members of the community to create and support the establishment of a local centre aimed at assisting the needs of the local Somali community which had led to the inception of the Sahan Society Centre. Sahan Society Centre continues to support and assist a total of 300 members of the local community. The number of members actively using the centre’s services has grown year on year, starting from 50 in 2006 through to 256 in 2012. The centre is also having an increased number of memberships and participation from older and younger men in the community. Our Ethos as a charity serving the needs of the vulnerable members of our local community are: To promote the participation, integration and cohesion of our members in their communities. To enhance the health and well being of Somali and other BME vulnerable mothers and children through education and leisure. To bridge the gap between Somali and other BME mothers and service providers, assist them with their needs and voice their concerns appropriately on their behalf.

For over 2 decades I’ve been supporting my clients in their health and wellbeing through various forms of massage and healing. I offer effective treatments in my clinic and stimulating education in the classroom. Leaving my past life as a graphic designer, I went back to college and studied Aromatherapy. Fast forward many years and experiences, I have gone on to train in Abdominal Therapy, Reflexology, Reiki, Indian Head Massage, Thai Yoga Massage and On-Site Acupressure Chair Massage (Amma Massage). Constantly striving to improve my skills has lead me to various exotic places, from the Thai jungle, rainforests of Central America, throughout North America, and then the rolling hills in Surrey, UK. I first learned about Abdominal Therapy in 2004, after a chance meeting with Dr. Rosita Arvigo, whilst on holiday in Belize, Central America. This inspired me to seek Abdominal Therapy when I returned home to the UK. Driven by personal health issues, I received regular treatments which supported and reframed my attitude to my own pelvic health. Abdominal Therapy not only transformed my health, but also my outlook on life. Years later, and after working with hundreds of clients, I now teach Abdominal Therapy, running workshops at personal and professional level, both in person and online specialising in the art of gaining and maintaining abdominal health. I run Abdominal workshops for those who seek a deeper understanding and healing from digestive or pelvic issues, and train professional therapists in the art of Abdominal Therapy within The Abdominal Therapy Collective. I was a graphic designer for 15 years, immersed in the discipline of explaining concepts, products and events in a way that was easy to understand and visually striking, I bring these qualities to my teaching, always seeking simple and effective ways to explain healing concepts and methods to my students. I have created a beautiful haven for healing and learning in my home in leafy Twickenham, South West London, UK. Offering treatments at the top of my home in my cocoon-like therapy room, and a fun and engaging workshop space at the bottom, in my kitchen and garden studio. My passion for pelvic health education draws me near and far, for those seeking personal healing or professional growth alike.
