Films Without Borders (FWB) is a non-political UK registered charity that provides hands-on educational filmmaking workshops for youth between the ages of 15 – 19, living in challenging countries around the globe. FWB’s intention is to break down barriers, build bridges, and create a dialogue whilst simultaneously teaching youth the first stages of film production.. Since our launch in 2010 we have run more than 20 successful workshops in countries which include Israel, Rwanda, South Africa, Palestine, and most recently in aboriginal communities in Australia, enabling us to access over 300 young people living at risk. Our FWB participants subsequently made a series of high quality short films, which have been screened at prestigious international film festivals, including the Cannes International Film Festival. We are delighted that our films were screened during royal visits in Australia and South Africa, where they were shown in the presence of President Zuma and the Earl and Countess of Wessex. The films have also been shown on various networks around the world. In 2013 FWB won the Brit Week Innovation in Philanthropy Award in Los Angeles. In 2014 FWB arranged paid work experience at the Jerusalem Cinemathèque/Film Festival for a Palestinian FWB participant. She continues to work for the organization on a paid freelance basis. In 2015 we are delighted to announce that Lionsgate UK has supported three internships, one with a casting director and two on a major feature film. The interns are from Israel, Rwanda and a South African township. This has resulted in the Israeli intern working on a paid freelance basis for the casting director. The South African intern has been moved out of the township and placed into a job created by S-ABC in South Africa. This has all been initiated and financially supported by FWB. We are currently looking at supporting a Masters in film for the Rwandan participant. We share an independent partnership with the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, whereby we incorporate award participants into FWB’s global workshops. Our other major partners include Swarovski, Lionsgate UK, Swiss International Airlines, Twickenham Studios, Deluxe Post Production/Encore, The Editpool. The founder of Universal Truth, Nyla Khan, was forced to marry and subsequently desensitised from her own feelings for over 15 years. Her story is more than the typical narrative of being taken to Pakistan and forced into a marriage - she is a woman who cannot be put into a box no matter how hard family members and communities may try, about being disowned by her family and suffering abuse and community coercion from her own community. She has conquered every block that has been put in her way and now feels that her purpose in life is to demonstrate that all women can follow the same path. Nyla’s spiritual awakening has healed herself and presented her life’s purpose which is to gain the correct knowledge and experience to share her story and start Universal Truth so to be a role model that most ethnic minority women don’t have or can use more of – a successful and independent woman who surpassed tradition and limitations that were placed on her by archaic cultural conditions which resulted in community isolation tactics and silence in the name of honour. Nyla went from feeling like a failed unworthy daughter to the knowledge that she is just a soul who was made in the light of God. There is no box in which she belongs, she is a soul that was born to be free learning hard lessons. With so much fear instilled in victims, Nyla and Universal Truth bring a unique spiritual approach to these women. Through Universal Truth, Nyla seeks to break a cycle, to lead, to teach and heal others through her wisdom - as through her journey, she now lives a life of self-expression and truth - a birth right which belongs to all of us. Bringing Universal Truth to life is a path to support and inspire not only all the women of colour who are wanting to defy all odds but need strength and inspiration to do so, but also to inspire women from any background who have suffered similar trauma to give them hope and the courage to be loud and speak their truths. We understand that society’s structures and systems must embrace change in order for change to be effective and sustainable. That is why Universal Truth's focus is strongly dedicated to leading policy changes so that ethnic minorities are systemically supported and protected.

The club was founded in 1927 from an existing group of Nottingham writers eager to expand their membership. Among the founding members were a number of published writers, one of them Arthur E Ashley who wrote under the pen name Francis Vivian – produced two sets of books for his Brother Ignatius, and Inspector Knollis series, over many years. In the 1930’s NWC began to publish a regular club magazine Scribe, and the journal continues to carry the name today. As it did at the start, Nottingham Writers’ Club still prints successes, winning club competition entries, and items of interest to writers. Only during an enforced break during the Second World War, when a number of members were in the armed forces and the scarcity of paper suspended the production of Scribe, was the life of the club interrupted. Among its most well-known former members are Helen Cresswell, and Alan Sillitoe, who became a Freeman of Nottingham in 2008. The role of club President has been filled by writers too, including Eric Malpass who was succeeded by Peter Walker (the author Nicholas Rhea, whose Constable books became the TV series ‘Heartbeat’) in 1994, who in turn handed over the role in 2007 to the Mansfield based writer Roy Bainton. Speakers have always been an essential part of the annual programme, and have had among them, Leslie Charteris (the author of the Saint books, which became a successful television series in the 1960’s). During the last ten years the club has hosted talks by local authors Stephen Booth and John Harvey – both crime writers; the multi-talented Simon Brett, and novelist and short-story writer Jean Saunders. During the club’s 75th Anniversary (in 2002) our main speaker for that year, Edwina Currie, gave her talk amid the press and television coverage surrounding the disclosure of her close relationship with ex-Prime Minister John Major, in her latest book. The club has met in many buildings across Nottingham; among them the Black Boy Hotel that bordered the Market Square, The Elite Café on Parliament Street and The Bell Inn on Angel Row. The Black Boy Hotel and The Elite Café are no longer standing. In 1987 the club began its long association with The Nottingham Mechanics, moving into the card room at Birbeck House in Trinity Square until relocating to the new home of Nottingham Mechanics on North Sherwood Street in 2003, where we continue to meet.

When I sat down to formulate the concept of the company, I had a specific target in mind. My vision was to create a genuine one-stop-shop for all forms of industrial computing and control. I had seen other companies attempt to achieve this and fail, so I was determined that my new company would be successful and able to offer a comprehensive range of services from 24/7 support through to full systems design, for Management Information systems – through a full range of Validation Services and in control systems from the smallest PLC to the largest DCS. I knew from my own experience that what was needed was a company that could deliver, had the right attitude and was flexible enough to respond, whatever the customers’ requirements. It had to make the customer the primary concern, and consistently offer the same level of quality and service on all projects, from small upgrades and support contracts to major capital investments. It was from these initial concepts that ITS was formed in 1991. In the years since then a great deal of hard work and effort has been invested by all the staff of ITS. When I look around the company today, I am proud that we have assembled what I consider to be a superb team of staff. Between them, they are capable of achieving everything initially envisaged. I am also encouraged by the fact that they are now driving the company forward, making it not just a place to work but the place to work. In recent years many people have told me that ITS is an organisation with large company ideas, and I regard this as a compliment. Our story starts in the classroom, but unlike most CPR training companies, it doesn't end there. Our co-founder, Roy Shaw, was a classroom CPR instructor for many years before our company was born in 2003. Roy knew what he was doing was ambitious, so rather than do it on his own, he partnered with Paul Martin and Scott Andersen to help in the early years. Our new team now included a paramedic / CPR instructor, a web developer / marketer, and a graphic designer / video editor. You wouldn't be alone if CPR training makes you think of classrooms and manikins rather than a computer. And in 2003, this was even more true than today. But that didn't stop us from deciding to change everything. After all, CPR training was broken and we were determined to fix it. No more falling asleep in a 4-6 hour class. Why not learn from the comfort of your home. GROWING PAINS AND EARLY WINS Of course, there have been challenges. Nearly a third of Internet users were on dial-up in 2003 and YouTube hadn't been invented yet. But by 2007, things were beginning to change. And that's the year we launched the Internet's first fully video-based CPR course. At this point, we had certified around 80,000 students, our three founders went full-time on the business, and we hired our first two employees to support our customers and gain compliance approvals. Compliance challenges are what led us to create a blended CPR program in 2008. Although online courses are acceptable for many people, there are certain industries where hands-on skills practice is mandatory. First, we built a national instructor network to meet this need. Then, in 2014, we introduced live video conference evaluations and a low-cost SUMO manikin kit to offer our students in-home skills evaluations, making ProTrainings the most compliant (and convenient) CPR course available online. EXPANSION AND NEW VENTURES A lot has changed since the early days. Our team has grown to 35+ people across our U.S. and U.K. offices. We've certified well over a million people and counting. And our free Student CPR program has certified tens of thousands of high school students around the country. Our course catalog has also expanded beyond CPR to include courses such as Bloodborne Pathogens, HIPAA, Hazcom, Fire Safety, Ergonomics, Sexual Harassment, Pet First Aid, Continuing Education content, and more to come.
