The Mary Carroll Library Founded in 1954 by Miss Mary Carroll, the School Library serves the students and Staff. It houses well over 10,000 books and is equipped with tape recorders, cassettes, headphones and a projector. Over the years, Miss Carroll worked out a scheme of training a team of Desk Librarians and this system, under the direction and with the assistance of the present Librarian, is still in operation today. The students gain very valuable experience in dealing with queries and handling books. The Library is open to all students and Staff. Most of the stock can be borrowed for home use but dictionaries, encyclopaedia and out-of-print books may not be taken out. A book may be borrowed for a fortnight and may be renewed on request if no one else has asked for it. Books can be reserved on request as in the public libraries. There is no fee required for joining the school Library. Library News Our new computerised system has been purchased and we have already uploaded over two thousand books onto the system! We hope to have all our fiction books uploaded by the end of the school year. Once all the fiction books have been uploaded we can begin using the new system to check out books. This means that students can also search our catalogue and renew books from home. Library Opening Hours A reminder that the library is open Monday to Friday at lunchtime, 1.00–1.40. Library Notice Board Keep an eye on the library noticeboard for details of writing competitions and library events! Library Readathon Following the success of our readathon last year we ran another one before the Christmas Holidays. Once again this year, the winning student was presented with a hamper of goodies. The hamper was on display in the library and sponsorship cards were collected from the library at lunchtime. All were invited to participate!

Trent Valley Woodturners are a club of 60+ members who meet on a regular basis to discuss and practice the art of wood turning. The club is based in Kegworth, Leicestershire and is situated next to the Village Hall. The workshop is situated in a brand new purpose built facility which was opened in early May 2015. On the second Wednesday of every month the members are entertained with a demonstration from either a professional wood turner or a club member. Demonstrations take place during the evening between 6.30 to 9 pm and are free for all members to attend. Non members are charged £5 for admission. Spaces are limited so be sure to contact the Secretary before arriving. Club activities include a hands on experience several times each month, where members have access to a variety of lathes and workshop equipment. At these meeting the members have the opportunity to use the club facilities or to just discuss ideas or problems with other people. On the third Wednesday of each month, members have the opportunity to socialise, watch DVD’s and discuss problems over tea and coffee. This is a ‘no turning session between 1.30 – 4.30pm. During the Autumn and Winter months, on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, training is given to students new to woodturning. The cost for each 8 week session, 2 hours per night is £64. Due to popular demand training has now been extended to include Friday Mornings, a 8 week course, 3 hours per session costs £96. Anyone interested in joining any of our training classes should contact the Secretary as soon as possible as places are limited. Activities are arranged throughout the year and include all day presentations by professional Woodturners and visits to local wood fairs. At these fairs the members demonstrate their woodturning skills and exhibit some of the items that have been made in the club. Some of these items are sold to the general public and some of the proceeds donated to charity. Sir Benfro

We have always had working horses on site. A family of four coloured gypsy cobs were rescued and brought here, with hopes of training up the two youngsters to take over. The two parents have retired and moved elsewhere and training has begun on the other two so that they can help us with carting, wood extraction and other jobs. We also have four dairy goats, a good flock of chickens and ducks as well as three rowdy geese. We currently have one colony of bees after not having a bee keeper for a couple of years, we’re hoping to increase this over the next couple of years. There are compromises involved in any animal farming system and we try to meet these in an ethical manner that everyone can agree with. We have cats to keep the rodents in check and some of us have dogs. The land is fantastic for wildlife, we have a huge range of residents including badgers, foxes, owls, dormice, bats, buzzards, frogs and newts. We probably have less animals in total than most farms, but we look at our animals differently to most farms. All the stock is free-range and what we ask of them seems to us a fair exchange for their food, security and comfort. We milk our nanny goats morning and evening, which is enough for all the goat milk drinkers plus enough extra from Spring until Autumn to make fresh cheese. The chickens have a large enclosure where they are free-range and they produce enough eggs in the longer days for all our needs. The ducks are Khaki Campbells, highly trained slug-killers, which patrol the organic gardens keeping them relatively pest-free. The dogs and cats are family pets, but their very presence around the yard tends to keep foxes and other predators away from the poultry. We rent some of our land for short periods to local farmers to graze their animals. We raise geese to graze the orchards and to generate a bit of income by selling young birds. Many of us eat meat which is produced as a by-product of the milk and eggs, that is to say excess billy goats, cockerels and ganders. We have been keeping sheep in recent years for meat, although we don’t currently have any at the moment but are looking into how we can better managed our grassland to produce meat. One of our members also keeps pigs, they are used to clear land for vegetable growing and used to graze wider areas for conservation. They are fed on organic grain grown in Pembrokeshire and waste whey from a local cheesemaker, and occasional brewers grains from a local brewery as well as fresh organic fruit and veg waste from local shops. In general communal meals are vegetarian but when we do eat meat there is normally a vegetarian / vegan option.
