Oxford BSAC Scuba Diving Club is the award-winning Oxford Branch of the British Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC). The branch was founded in 1956 – a few years after the BSAC itself, making it one of the oldest diving clubs formed in the UK. As you might imagine we have a rich history and some very experienced members. Our club is run entirely by volunteers. We train people to dive and snorkel but we also welcome qualified divers to join us (whoever they trained with). We organise regular diving trips to Dorset and inland sites. We run several trips a year to longer-range destinations – in the recent past, these have included the Red Sea, Gozo (Malta), Scapa Flow, Sound of Mull, Plymouth and the Isles of Scilly. We also have close relationships with other local BSAC branches including the Oxford University Underwater Exploration Group (OUUEG) with whom we often collaborate. The activities of the branch centre around three areas, the clubhouse, pool training and diving. We also carry a decent level of equipment and have a great hard boat moored in Weymouth – all of which help to make us a successful dive club which has been going for over 60 years. We are a mature club with a friendly and enthusiastic atmosphere. The branch has around 70 members from the Oxford area stretching from Bicester in the North to Didcot in the South and from Witney in the West to Aylesbury in the East. We even have some members who live here during the week and go home on weekends. We cover a good cross-section of Oxford society. Ages range from young children who snorkel to senior citizens that dive or who are social members. We are always happy to welcome new members, be they untrained novices, experienced divers or instructors – no matter who they have trained with. Both my parents were or had been in the fitness industry at some point and I grew up being a part of every sports team and club at school. Dancing was a large part of it and I went on to study professional stage dance at college after school. I had danced since I was 3 and It had always been my dream to be a dancer until I injured my back in my final year of tuition. So I taught dance and cheerleading to primary and secondary girls for a couple of years before it was back to the drawing board and with the love of health and fitness and wanting to help people,I went down the trainer path. I first done my exercise to music and my gym qualification then onto my Level 3 personal training certificate. In 2013 I was looking at bikini and fitness models and competitors online in America and said to my old man “I want to look like that!” And his response was “great, go do it.” Without any knowledge or experience in this field I set out to do my research. I started looking at shows, competitors, supplements, training, how to cut, how to bulk, stage tan, bikinis, shoes… the list was endless. I hadn’t thought about a coach before as didn’t know they existed then (now everyone and their gran seems to be one). My dad was a bodybuilder in his teens and early 20s so asked him for a little help. And by little he told me if I was looking okay or needed to be leaner. Very funny when I look back now.

Our Work We rely on the enthusiasm of our team of volunteers, who get involved in our programmes and help us improve invariably. Moreover, the Centre benefits from a number of voluntary British advisers on dealings with British institutions and audiences. These are friends of Romania, private or public persons from various institutions who have supported the Centre in its endeavours by encouraging us to bring new ideas to life. Besides the cultural activities implied by the name, RCC also plays an active part in the social life of the Romanian Diaspora in Britain. Our History The idea of establishing an organisation to represent Romanians in the UK dates from the '50s, when ACARDA (Asociatia Culturala a Romanilor din Anglia - The Cultural Association of the Romanians in England) was founded by Ion Ratiu and Horia Georgescu working together with various individuals, notably the ladies of the Romanian community. In 1984 the UMRL (Uniunea Mondiala a Romanilor Liberi - The World Union of Free Romanians) was launched in Geneva to unite Romanians from all over the world. Ion Ratiu was elected the first President. From that date (1984) UMRL published a monthly newspaper in Romanian and English, 'Romanul Liber' (Free Romanian), which flourished until 1997. In 1984 a British branch of UMRL was founded, along with branches in 23 other countries. Sandu Pobereznic was elected as the first British President, and succeeded by Nicolae Ratiu in 1992. The newspaper was closed and political activity sharply scaled down after the election of 1996, when it was considered that the objective of UMRL, the restoration of freedom and democracy to Romania, had largely been achieved.
