We invite you to join the IOU Education Distance Learning Initiative for the Incarcerated. This is an effort to bring Islamic Education to a population that needs it most. IOU has embarked on a journey to provide it’s Diploma and Undergraduate course of Islamic and Arabic studies, and other course offerings to the incarcerated Muslim population across the country, and around the world where requested. Efforts are underway in several state and federal correctional facilities to provide authentic Islamic Education through this initiative, to Muslim inmates in an effort to aid their rehabilitation process and to assist in preparing them for a successful and productive life after prison. Because the Islamic Online University was founded as an internet-based institution of learning, to accomplish the above-stated objective has required a “paradigm shift” away from the internet resource, to that of hard-copy materials, i.e. soft-back, non-spiral bound text-books, (cds and dvds where staff supervision is available.) There is no need for the inmate to access the internet, as the materials are made available to him or her, free of charge. The cost of the Diploma program to the inmate is free, through the generous donations of global and local donors. Currently male and female Muslim inmates are enrolled in 26 states and Puerto Rico. To date more than two thousand (2000) inmates are registered in the program across the country, with an active enrollment of more than one thousand (1000) inmates.

We have always been passionate about helping others and, during the pandemic, we saw the anxieties of parents trying to keep up with, and understand, their child’s learning. We could see what parents really wanted was support and guidance and we started to think how we could offer this through ‘Tutor Your Child’. We decided to put together a programme which will help and guide families through each school year for maths and English, nurture confidence and mental health as well as try and support any additional needs. ‘Tutor Your Child’ is an online subscription service for parents of children Reception to Year 6, to help with maths and/or English. Each week, parents receive a short video showing them what to teach and how to teach it, with supporting activities. By the end of the academic year, parents will have covered the skills within the curriculum with their child in small, manageable steps and been part of their child’s learning journey. There will be assessment opportunities along the way so they can keep track of their child’s progress. We are passionate about children’s mental health so ‘Tutor Your Child’ includes helpful advice through regular blog articles and access to our ‘Wellbeing Zone’; offering guidance for supporting children’s self-esteem and developing a positive attitude to themselves and others. Restorative and relational practice is an emerging Social Science, adopted in multiple ways across the UK and beyond by Police and Crime Commissioners, Schools, Local Authorities, Health and Social Care Settings, Prison and Probation Services to address a wide variety of challenges, including: • Positive mental health and wellbeing • Organisational culture change • Staff retention and a reduction in sick leave • Improving attendance, attainment and behaviour in schools • Fostering inclusive residential environments and a reduction in re-offending In 2012, the Restorative Thinking team began delivering face to face training and coaching. Our parenting programme won the CANparent Quality Mark in 2014 and our curriculum programme for primary schools won the Teach Primary Resources Award in 2019.
