Queen Mary’s College has been in the forefront of the education of women ever since July 1914, when the Government of Madras instituted the Madras Women’s College. The initial intake of 33 students was housed in a modest building called ‘Capper House’. However, by 1915, the college premises were expanded through the government’s annexure of the area surrounding Capper House. At this stage it offered only Intermediate courses. In 1916 under graduate courses were offered in History and Economics. Eventually Intermediate courses in subjects like Geography, Indian Music, Physics, Chemistry and Home Science were introduced. Miss De La Hey was the first Principal of the college. The name of the college was changed to Queen Mary’s College in 1917. This college which was started on an experimental basis flourished and gained permanent status in 1918. By this time it had acquired fame and many young women who entered its portals for education, took wing after completing their courses.

The Holgate Academy buildings are split over two secure sites, Nabbs and Hillcrest, surrounded by large areas of green space and playing fields. Each building houses faculty areas with dedicated classrooms, a library, a careers resource centre, sport hall, IT suites and specialist art, product design and technology facilities. Our modern, purpose-built science block offers superb space for the teaching of biology, physics and chemistry with fully equipped labs. The area at our Nabbs site, known as ‘The Wells’, houses our renowned art department with student artwork adorning walls and stairwells. Our new Accelerated Learning Centre accommodates students who require additional and specialist support to allow them to catch up with their peers before joining year group classes. By working with business partners, such as IKEA and J Tomlinson, the space has been fully kitted out with new decor, furniture and classroom resources. The dance school was started in 1987 by Jackie Cox, Louise Ringshaw took over the dance school in December 2004 and in December 2005 decided to rename the school to Chameleon Theatre Arts. The name was chosen by Louise to represent the performer, as she felt is described appropriately how performers must adapt to new environments, dance and performance styles. At Chameleon, we aim to train students to become good all-around performers, adaptable to space, social situations, teaching them life skills as well as strong technique, fun show work and graded qualifications (with the Association of American Dancing). We are well known for our confidence-building skills also! Many of the students have gone on to Perform or to teach with the encouragement received from teachers at the school.
