Pond Meadow Academy Trust is an outstanding special school where staff have high expectations and ambition for all children and young people. The school is situated in Bellfields, a suburb in the north of Guildford. We provide education for Surrey children from 2-19 with a range of severe and complex learning disabilities and profound and multiple learning disabilities (including complex medical needs). A very high proportion of pupils also have a diagnosis of ASD as well as additional complex needs. We are dedicated to ensuring that the individual needs of every child/young person who attends Pond Meadow are recognised and listened to. Our progressive and responsive curriculum addresses the needs of all learners, particularly around points of transition, as does key investment in teacher and staff development. We use a range of teaching approaches and strategies at different stages of learning that reflect the way our pupils learn. Our classes are structured to promote communication, emotional regulation, self-help and independence. Our staff have expert knowledge in specialist strategies including TEACCH, Attention Autism, PECS, PODD, Bricks for Autism and Intensive Interaction.

I have always had a big passion for art and design and always tend to apply that all important ‘creative flare’ in everything I do. My educational background includes studying Art and Design at College and subsequently, a degree in Multimedia Systems at University. As a professional Henna Artist I have been applying henna onto skin, in the form of body art, for several years. However, recently I decided to experiment with different types of material such as paper, glass and canvas. I was pleasantly surprised by the results, as the dark stain of the henna paste complimented the lighter backgrounds perfectly. The other advantage of this was that the designs wouldn’t fade overtime as they normally would when applied to the body. This is how I started out in my current venture and have gained a lot of interest and positive feedback from the people I’ve shown my work to. All my designs are totally unique and adaptable, and can be viewed at any angle, the owner can decide. So far, I have produced a range of work that is either framed or created directly on canvas. My aim is to create modern, affordable art with a traditional feel that appeals to a wide range of buyers from the general public to specialist collectors.

Westfield School is smaller than most: there are currently just over 60 learners on roll, between the ages of 2 and 19. This number varies year on year. The school dates from the early 1970's, but the buildings and grounds have undergone considerable improvement over the years, and now feature six class bases, two sensory areas, a specialist food technology room, therapy room, multi-purpose hall and sensory garden. Other facilities such as hydrotherapy and RDA are accessed via alternative providers. Our playground is divided into four distinct areas to enable different activities to take place with no effect on young people requiring ‘quiet time’. We regard playtimes as an extension of the curriculum and different activities are offered on different days, which enables learning to continue throughout leisure activities. It is a great feeling to witness four of the ECM outcomes happening every time you look out of the window: no-one has yet managed to achieve economic well-being out there!

When I was employed by our sister company Reach Alternative Education, we were moved daily by seeing our families clearly needing support and guidance with various situations and circumstances. Although we were able to do this to a point our social consciousness knew that this was not enough. This troubled us greatly, so we set about researching what was missing from our local communities and how we could bridge that gap. We realised we could create a response to address the imbalance that would add to the already vital services out there; whilst making sure that what we offered was completely accessible particularly for our families who never quite met thresholds with statutory or specialist services elsewhere. After much careful consideration Reach Out (SW) CiC was born as a not for profit community interest company. We hadn’t of course anticipated all things Covid-19 so our pilot and launch are commencing slightly later than scheduled as we do our utmost to accommodate best practice in line with ever-changing guidelines from the government. We are very fortunate to have complete support from Reach Alternative Education along with our directors and Advisory Group. We believe we have a format that is responsive to the ever-changing need of environments. We endeavour to supply practical support, guidance and enterprising opportunities to our local families that chose to access it. We launch our pilot in late September 2020 with the aim of obtaining enough grant support and donations to make the provision available to fully launch our Not for Profit Community Interest Company in late March 2021.
