Cultures CIC was formed by Sade Sangowawa and commenced trading as a Community Interest Company (CIC) In 2007. Based in Stockton-On-Tees, Cultures CIC works with individuals and groups from BME, migrant and Refugee communities to improve social, economic and cultural inclusion and build social cohesion. The company is involved in a number of long and short term community projects across the following themes: Improve employability; Promote equality; Break down barriers; Improve access to services and; Delivering cultural awareness raising seminars and conferences. Since 2007 Cultures has become a valued community resource and has established its credibility as a public service provider for out-sourced service provision. We have also been very successful in delivering a number of other projects for job Centre Plus, Learning & Skills Council and Stockton Borough Council via the Five Lamps Organisation and The Taste of Africa event, which is now considered a regional event with an increasing audience, attracting people from as far as London. We understand the difficulties faced by migrants when they migrate to another country and through our services we aim to help them understand the new culture and way of living, the public service structure and their rights and responsibilites. I’m a writer and teacher and I’ve been sharing my heart online since 2006. I’m the author of This I Know: Notes on Unraveling the Heart and my mission is to help people access their creative joy and nurture a deeper relationship with themselves. Words have been at the centre of my world for as long as I can remember. I started writing a diary aged 11 and grew not only a life-long journaling practice but also an unending curiosity about my place in the world. Studying photography at art school followed by a degree in journalism lead to me working as a journalist for many years, but the truth is my life, as I now know it, began in the spring of 2005 when the man I loved died very suddenly from a heart attack — everything I thought I knew about life changed in that instant. Walking through the fire of bereavement is how I truly came to inhabit every part of who I am, the shadows as well as the light. In 2006 I started writing a blog and being able to share my thoughts and feelings online was incredibly empowering, my way of getting back out there from the safety of my living room. Blogging helped reopen the door to my creativity, connecting me to other souls around the world as I found my way back to what was meaningful for me.

Our passion for climbing has inspired us to develop climbing walls that enable anyone and everyone to access the sport and develop the next generation of climbers. The Climbing Academy started in Bristol in 2008 when The Mothership opened. We delivered on our vision to build a bouldering wall that would appeal to as many people as possible, giving them the opportunity to take part in what we think is the best sport in the world. Soon after, we opened The Newsroom in Glasgow – based in an old newspaper printing works – bringing the city its first dedicated bouldering centre. In more recent years we took over Undercover Rock AKA The Church, Bristol’s original roped wall in St Werburghs. In late Autumn 2018, we opened a brand new climbing centre in Glasgow. The Prop Store came to life in an old BBC prop store and offers both bouldering and roped climbing. All of our climbing walls offer the very best in climbing facilities and courses, designed for climbers of all abilities. Our staff are always on-hand to offer advice to help you get the very best out of your experience climbing. Our mission is to work with educational institutions to develop educational solutions to support today’s learners. This will be achieved through activities, which include the strategic design and delivery of interactive and engaging programmes of study through to small online skills based learning courses (eg MOOCs), or through active support of and advice about an institutions’ innovation and change agenda. Examples of our specific areas of activity can be found here. Background The journey of today’s learners in the 21st century needs to reflect a world where shifting job roles and new technologies will impact significantly on career development. This is underpinned by current estimates about new millenials: They are estimated to work in some 15 to 20 job roles over their lifetime, The majority expect to work beyond 65 years of age (and 12% until they die), It is estimated that 65% of today’s school children will work in a job that doesn’t yet exist. Having the necessary skills and up to date knowledge and understanding to underpin multiple job roles over a lifetime will require a commitment to lifelong learning. With increasing state pension ages and average life expectancy worldwide this drives the need for educational solutions to support individuals gaining access to the right job roles and career development. Traditional models of higher education are increasingly costly for learners in developed markets and short of supply (and out of reach in terms of price) for learners in emerging economies. Innovative solutions are needed.

Bauer Academy was founded by Courtnay McLeod, a news broadcaster and academic, in 2014. Courtnay had seen that traditional education was in many instances failing employers and learners. She set up the Bauer Academy inside Bauer Media, initially to create a talent pipeline for Bauer’s multi-platform media business in the UK. The Bauer Academy grew rapidly, launching partnership programmes with The Big Lottery, The Rank Foundation, the European Social Fund, and The Prince’s Trust, amongst others. The learners on these programmes are given access to Bauer Media’s experts and resources to learn practical skills like content production and creative writing, as well as all-important employability training. In 2016, The Bauer Academy was accepted on to the Register of Apprenticeship Training Providers. Apprenticeship Standards can be introduced to develop and increase skills in existing employees as well as new entrants, and our team have developed a smart, flexible and collaborative delivery model that has changed the language of Apprenticeships. The Bauer Academy’s work on diversity was featured in an Ofcom report and video, and has been showcased at an event we hosted at Westminster for MPs and leaders in education. We have introduced new programming roles within Bauer Media’s radio business, that specifically targeted and hired from under-represented female groups. The Academy’s contribution to tackling diversity issues is genuine, and creates not only a positive impact but genuine change within the media and other industries.

'When I started Shadowpath in 2002, I had no idea of its potential. I approached everyday spaces because I couldn't afford to rent the few regional theatres. That turned out to be the best thing for Shadowpath and now everyday spaces are our signature style of theatre producing. Businesses gain a creative boost and access to new customers, performers get a professional opportunity to work in alternative spaces, the community gets more arts and culture programming and Shadowpath connects to community partners and free space!
